Abstract:Auditory stimuli are proposed as beneficial neurorehabilitation methods in patients with disorders of consciousness. However, precise and accurate quantitative indices to estimate their potential effect remain scarce. Fourteen patients were recruited from the Neuro-Rehabilitation Unit of Hangzhou Hospital of Zhejiang Armed Police Corps of China. Altogether, there were seven cases of unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (five males and two females, aged 45.7 ± 16.8 years) and seven cases of minimally conscious state (six males and one female, aged 42.3 ± 20.8 years). Simultaneously, fourteen healthy controls (10 males and 4 females, aged 51.7 ± 9.7 years) also participated in this case-control experiment. Brain response to music, subjects' own name, and noise was monitored by quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) in the resting state and with acoustic stimulation. Predictive QEEG values in various brain regions were investigated. Our results show that cerebral activation was high in subjects stimulated by their own name, especially in the temporal lobe in patients with disorders of consciousness, and the frontal lobe in the control group. Further, during resting and stimulation, QEEG index (δ + θ/α + β ratio) negatively correlated with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised score in traumatic disorders of consciousness patients. Hence, we speculate that a subject's own name might be an effective awakening therapy for patients with disorders of consciousness. Moreover, QEEG index in specific stimulation states may be used as a prognostic indicator for disorders of consciousness patients (sensitivity, 75%; specificity, 50%). This clinical study has been registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier: NCT03385291).

Abstract:Neuronal activity can evoke the hemodynamic change that gives rise to the observed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signal. These increases are also regulated by the resting blood volume fraction (V 0) associated with regional vasculature. The activation locus detected by means of the change in the blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal intensity thereby may deviate from the actual active site due to varied vascular density in the cortex. Furthermore, conventional detection techniques evaluate the statistical significance of the hemodynamic observations. In this sense, the significance level relies not only upon the intensity of the BOLD signal change, but also upon the spatially inhomogeneous fMRI noise distribution that complicates the expression of the results. In this paper, we propose a quantitative strategy for the calibration of activation states to address these challenging problems. The quantitative assessment is based on the estimated neuronal efficacy parameter \(\epsilon\) of the hemodynamic model in a voxel-by-voxel way. It is partly immune to the inhomogeneous fMRI noise by virtue of the strength of the optimization strategy. Moreover, it is easy to incorporate regional vascular information into the activation detection procedure. By combining MR angiography images, this approach can remove large vessel contamination in fMRI signals, and provide more accurate functional localization than classical statistical techniques for clinical applications. It is also helpful to investigate the nonlinear nature of the coupling between synaptic activity and the evoked BOLD response. The proposed method might be considered as a potentially useful complement to existing statistical approaches.
Prediction of Subjective Affective State from Brain Activations

Abstract:Decoding and information theoretic techniques were used to analyze the predictions that can be made from functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging data on individual trials. The subjective pleasantness produced by warm and cold applied to the hand could be predicted on single trials with typically in the range 60-80% correct from the activations of groups of voxels in the orbitofrontal and medial prefrontal cortex and pregenual cingulate cortex, and the information available was typically in the range 0.1-0.2 (with a maximum of 0.6) bits. The prediction was typically a little better with multiple voxels than with one voxel, and the information increased sublinearly with the number of voxels up to typically seven voxels. Thus the information from different voxels was not independent, and there was considerable redundancy across voxels. This redundancy was present even when the voxels were from different brain areas. The pairwise stimulus-dependent correlations between voxels, reflecting higher-order interactions, did not encode significant information. For comparison, the activity of a single neuron in the orbitofrontal cortex can predict with 90% correct and encode 0.5 bits of information about whether an affectively positive or negative visual stimulus has been shown, and the information encoded by small numbers of neurons is typically independent. In contrast, the activation of a 3 x 3 x 3-mm voxel reflects the activity of approximately 0.8 million neurons or their synaptic inputs and is not part of the information encoding used by the brain, thus providing a relatively poor readout of information compared with that available from small populations of neurons.
Fmri Study of Pain Reaction in the Brain under State of "Qigong"

Abstract:In this study, 4 male Qigong masters (aged 60 +/- 12) who had Qigong practicing experience for more than 30 years were tested. By using the technique of fMRI, the change of brain function under the state of Qigong was observed through the peripheral pain stimulation generated by potassium penetrating method. The fMRI examination was running on a GE signa VH/3.0 T MRI machine and block design was used. The test was repeated several times, which was carried out before and 15 min after Qigong practicing. The heart and respiration rate of these 4 Qigong masters were monitored during the whole test. SPM2 was used for the data analysis, and the result showed that before Qigong practicing, besides SI and SII-insula regions, many other Brodmann areas, the cigulate cortex, the thalamus, and the cerebellum were all activated, while 15 min after that, the activated areas were decreased obviously, which were mainly at the SII-insula region and some other Brodmann areas. Since the SII-insula region was activated in both of these two states, further analysis of the response curve was focused on it. Its response amplitude under the state of Qigong (3.5%) was greater than that before Qigong (1.2%). Our result indicated that the main manifestation of brain functional change under Qigong was functional suppressing, but in some particular regions such as SII-insula region in our study, the response amplitude was increased. Further study of the exact physiological mechanism of Qigong is needed.

Abstract:The brain function researching by functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging has recently attracted attention. The sustained mental calculation was performed as a cognitive task and collected data using MRI. The resting-fMRI data and calculation-fMRI data of 14 normal volunteers were analyzed by the arithmetic of ALFF. The amplitude of low frequency fluctuation was compared between resting data and calculation data. Monitoring amplitude changes of signal, the results showed that low frequency fluctuation exited in some activated brains and default-mode network regions changed in response to loading external cognitive. Besides, reasons of regional changes were investigated primarily.

Abstract:The study of brain function by fMRI is currently a cynosure of researchers. In this study, we performed mental calculation as a cognitive task and used MRI for data collection. Activated brain areas were found by the software of SPM. Moreover, the average of BOLD signal (Average-BOLD) and the principal component signal by principal component analysis (PCA) of BOLD signal (PCA-BOLD) in the regions of interest (ROD) were figured. We compared these two sorts of signals versus the signal designed by the experiment. The results show that PCA-BOLD signal is a better parameter for quantitive evaluations of the activated brain areas and for the basic research of brain function by scaling the intensity of ROI.

Correlations Between Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Levels of Consciousness in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to impaired consciousness. Recent diffusion tensor imaging studies associated consciousness with imaging metrics including fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). We evaluated their correlations and determined the best index in candidate regions. Six databases were searched, including PubMed and Embase, and 16 studies with 701 participants were included. Data from region-of-interest and whole-brain analysis methods were meta-analysed separately. The FA-consciousness correlation was marginal in the whole-brain white matter (r = 0.63, 95% CI [0.47, 0.79], p = 0.000) and the corpus callosum (CC) (r = 0.60, 95% CI [0.48, 0.71], p = 0.000), and moderate in the internal capsule (r = 0.48, 95% CI [0.24, 0.72], p = 0.000). Correlations with ADC trended negative and lacked significance. Further subgroup analysis revealed that consciousness levels correlated strongly with FA in the CC body (r = 0.66, 95% CI [0.43, 0.89]), moderately in the splenium (r = 0.58, 95% CI [0.38, 0.78]), but insignificantly in the genu. In conclusion, FA correlates better with consciousness levels than ADC in TBI. The degree of correlation varies among brain regions. The CC (especially its splenium and body) is a reliable candidate region to quantitatively reflect consciousness levels.
Modulation of practice-dependent plasticity in default brain functionality in child abacus experts

Abstract:In this study, we want to explore whether default functionality of the children brain is functionally reorganized by longtime special practice. Two groups of children were studied: child abacus experts and control. The brain activations were measured by using functional MRI during performance mental calculation. In both groups, this task normally produces taskindependent decreases (TID) relative to a baseline of passivefixating awhile point. Our results indicate that longtime practice of abacus mental calculation does not change the network of default mode but it modulates the degree of the deactivation. The degree of brain deactivation in child abacus experts is much lower than the control children during performance of mental calculation.
Mental Calculation Drives Reliable and Weak Distant Connectivity While Music Listening Induces Dense Local Connectivity

Abstract:Mathematical calculation usually requires sustained attention to manipulate numbers in the mind, while listening to light music has a relaxing effect on the brain. The differences in the corresponding brain functional network topologies underlying these behaviors remain rarely known. Here, we systematically examined the brain dynamics of four behaviors (resting with eyes closed and eyes open, tasks of music listening and mental calculation) using 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings and graph theory analysis. We developed static and dynamic minimum spanning tree (MST) analysis method and demonstrated that the brain network topology under mental calculation is a more line-like structure with less tree hierarchy and leaf fraction; however, the hub regions, which are mainly located in the frontal, temporal and parietal regions, grow more stable over time. In contrast, music-listening drives the brain to exhibit a highly rich network of star structure, and the hub regions are mainly located in the posterior regions. We then adopted the dynamic dissimilarity of different MSTs over time based on the graph Laplacian and revealed low dissimilarity during mental calculation. These results suggest that the human brain functional connectivity of individuals has unique dynamic diversity and flexibility under various behaviors.
Predicting the subjective intensity of imagined experiences from electrophysiological measures of oscillatory brain activity

Abstract:Most people can conjure images and sounds that they experience in their minds. There are, however, marked individual differences. Some people report that they cannot generate imagined sensory experiences at all (aphantasics) and others report that they have unusually intense imagined experiences (hyper-phantasics). These individual differences have been linked to activity in sensory brain regions, driven by feedback. We would therefore expect imagined experiences to be associated with specific frequencies of oscillatory brain activity, as these can be a hallmark of neural interactions within and across regions of the brain. Replicating a number of other studies, relative to a Resting-State we find that the act of engaging in auditory or in visual imagery is linked to reductions in the power of oscillatory brain activity across a broad range of frequencies, with prominent peaks in the alpha band (8–12 Hz). This oscillatory activity, however, did not predict individual differences in the subjective intensity of imagined experiences. For audio imagery, these were rather predicted by reductions within the theta (6–9 Hz) and gamma (33–38 Hz) bands, and by increases in beta (15–17 Hz) band activity. For visual imagery these were predicted by reductions in lower (14–16 Hz) and upper (29–32 Hz) beta band activity, and by an increase in mid-beta band (24–26 Hz) activity. Our data suggest that there is sufficient ground truth in the subjective reports people use to describe the intensity of their imagined sensory experiences to allow these to be linked to the power of distinct rhythms of brain activity. In future, we hope to combine this approach with better measures of the subjective intensity of imagined sensory experiences to provide a clearer picture of individual differences in the subjective intensity of imagined experiences, and of why these eventuate.

Abstract:In this paper we found parameter regions to exhibit those different population states, called dividing zones including flat fading zone, rapid fading zone and critical zone. Based on the dividing zones we can choose the number ratio between inhibitory neurons and excitatory neurons and establish the couplings in a neural network. Our researches also show that the balance value, enabling the firing density to reach the dynamic balance, does not depend on initial conditions. In additions, the critical value is only related to the number ratio under the same initial conditions.

Abstract:Conscious experience is awash with underlying relationships. Moreover, for various brain regions such as the visual cortex, the system is biased toward some states. Representing this bias using a probability distribution shows that the system can define expected quantities. The mathematical theory in the present paper links these facts by using expected float entropy (efe), which is a measure of the expected amount of information needed, to specify the state of the system, beyond what is already known about the system from relationships that appear as parameters. Under the requirement that the relationship parameters minimise efe, the brain defines relationships. It is proposed that when a brain state is interpreted in the context of these relationships the brain state acquires meaning in the form of the relational content of the associated experience. For a given set, the theory represents relationships using weighted relations which assign continuous weights, from 0 to 1, to the elements of the Cartesian product of that set. The relationship parameters include weighted relations on the nodes of the system and on their set of states. Examples obtained using Monte-Carlo methods (where relationship parameters are chosen uniformly at random) suggest that efe distributions with long left tails are most important.

A distinct cortical network for mathematical knowledge in the human brain

Abstract:How does the brain represent and manipulate abstract mathematical concepts? Recent evidence suggests that mathematical processing relies on specific brain areas and dissociates from language. Here, we investigate this dissociation in two fMRI experiments in which professional mathematicians had to judge the truth value of mathematical and nonmathematical spoken statements. Sentences with mathematical content systematically activated bilateral intraparietal sulci and inferior temporal regions, regardless of math domain, problem difficulty, and strategy for judging truth value (memory retrieval, calculation or mental imagery). Second, classical language areas were only involved in the parsing of both nonmathematical and mathematical statements, and their activation correlated with syntactic complexity, not mathematical content. Third, the mere presence, within a sentence, of elementary logical operators such as quantifiers or negation did not suffice to activate math-responsive areas. Instead, quantifiers and negation impacted on activity in right angular gyrus and left inferior frontal gyrus, respectively. Overall, these results support the existence of a distinct, non-linguistic cortical network for mathematical knowledge in the human brain.

Abstract:Quantitative relationships among the neurophysiologic processes that link neuronal activity to hemodynamic change is extremely important to interpret the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals. In this article the neurovascular coupling relationship was noninvasively studied in the human visual cortex. Graded neuronal/hemodynamic suppression conditions were generated using a paired-stimulus paradigm. Visual evoked potential (VEP) was measured to quantify neuronal activity. Hemodynamic activities were measured and quantified by perfusion changes. All quantification was normalized to the same activation condition using a single-stimulus paradigm within each experimental session. The results reveal: (i) there is a tight neurovascular coupling at graded neuronal suppression conditions; (ii) the neurovascular coupling relationship contains a subtle, but significant, nonlinear component; (iii) the linear model, nevertheless, is still a good approximation reflecting the neurovascular coupling relationship.

Abstract:Abstract Much of human culture’s advanced technology owes its existence to the ability to mentally manipulate quantities. Neuroscience has described the brain regions overall recruited by numerical tasks and the neuronal codes representing individual quantities during perceptual tasks. Nevertheless, it remains unknown how quantity representations are combined or transformed during mental computations and how specific quantities are coded in the brain when generated as the result of internal computations rather than evoked by a stimulus. Here, we imaged the brains of adult human subjects at 7 Tesla during an approximate calculation task designed to disentangle in- and outputs of the computation from the operation itself. While physically presented sample numerosities were distinguished in activity patterns along the dorsal visual pathway and within frontal and occipito-temporal regions, a representation of the internally generated result was most prominently detected in higher order regions such as angular gyrus and lateral prefrontal cortex. Behavioral precision in the task was related to cross-decoding performance between sample and result representations in medial IPS regions. This suggests the transformation of sample into result may be carried out within dorsal stream sensory-motor integration regions, and resulting outputs maintained for task purposes in higher-level regions in a format possibly detached from sensory-evoked inputs.

Relations Between Brain Network Activation and Analgesic Effect Induced by Low Vs. High Frequency Electrical Acupoint Stimulation in Different Subjects: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

Abstract:Two- or 100-Hz electrical acupoint stimulation (EAS) can induce analgesia via distinct central mechanisms. It has long been known that the extent of EAS analgesia showed tremendous difference among subjects. Functional MRI (fMRI) studies were performed to allocate the possible mechanisms underlying the frequency specificity as well as individual variability of EAS analgesia. In either frequencies, the averaged fMRI activation levels of bilateral secondary somatosensory area and insula, contralateral anterior cingulate cortex and thalamus were positively correlated with the EAS-induced analgesic effect across the subjects. In 2-Hz EAS group, positive correlations were observed in contralateral primary motor area, supplementary motor area, and ipsilateral superior temporal gyrus, while negative correlations were found in bilateral hippocampus. In 100-Hz EAS group, positive correlations were observed in contralateral inferior parietal lobule, ipsilateral anterior cingulate cortex, nucleus accumbens, and pons, while negative correlation was detected in contralateral amygdala. These results suggest that functional activities of certain brain areas might be correlated with the effect of EAS-induced analgesia, in a frequency-dependent dynamic. EAS-induced analgesia with low and high frequencies seems to be mediated by different, though overlapped, brain networks. The differential activations/de-activations in brain networks across subjects may provide a neurobiological explanation for the mechanisms of the induction and the individual variability of analgesic effect induced by EAS, or that of manual acupuncture as well.
Modelling brain based on canonical ensemble with functional MRI: A thermodynamic exploration on neural system

Abstract:Objective. Modelling is an important way to study the working mechanism of brain. While the characterization and understanding of brain are still inadequate. This study tried to build a model of brain from the perspective of thermodynamics at system level, which brought a new thinking to brain modelling. Approach. Regarding brain regions as systems, voxels as particles, and intensity of signals as energy of particles, the thermodynamic model of brain was built based on canonical ensemble theory. Two pairs of activated regions and two pairs of inactivated brain regions were selected for comparison in this study, and the analysis on thermodynamic properties based on the model proposed were performed. In addition, the thermodynamic properties were also extracted as input features for the detection of Alzheimer's disease. Main results. The experiment results verified the assumption that the brain also follows the thermodynamic laws. It demonstrated the feasibility and rationality of brain thermodynamic modelling method proposed, indicating that thermodynamic parameters could be applied to describe the state of neural system. Meanwhile, the brain thermodynamic model achieved much better accuracy in detection of Alzheimer's disease, suggesting the potential application of thermodynamic model in auxiliary diagnosis. Significance. (1) Instead of applying some thermodynamic parameters to analyze neural system, a brain model at system level was proposed from perspective of thermodynamics for the first time in this study. (2) The study discovered that the neural system also follows the laws of thermodynamics, which leads to increased internal energy, increased free energy and decreased entropy when system is activated. (3) The detection of neural disease was demonstrated to be benefit from thermodynamic model, implying the immense potential of thermodynamics in auxiliary diagnosis.
[Some implications of the "consciousness and brain" problem]

Abstract:Three issues are discussed: the possible mechanism of subjective events, the rhythmic coding of thinking operations and the possible brain basis of understanding. 1. Several approaches have been developed to explain how subjective experience emerges from brain activity. One of them is the return of the nervous impulses to the sites of their primary projections, providing a synthesis of sensory information with memory and motivation. Support for the existence of such a mechanism stems from studies upon the brain activity that underlies perception (visual and somatosensory) and thought (verbal and imaginative). The cortical centers for information synthesis have been found. For perception, these are located in projection areas: for thinking,--in frontal and temporal-parietal associative cortex.
