Abstract:Since 1989, wavelet transform (WT) has attracted much interest of chemists working on signal and image processing, and the WT-based techniques have been successfully applied to the chemical signal processing. This approach has been demonstrated as fast in computation with localization and having quick decay properties, in contrast to the popular methods existing, especially to the fast Fourier transform. More than 370 papers have been published up to the year 2002 which covered applications of WT in various fields of chemistry, including analytical chemistry, chemical physics, and quantum chemistry. In this paper, we report on applications of WT to data compression, data smoothing and denoising, baseline and background correction, resolution of multicomponent overlapping signals, regression and classification, and analytical images processing in analytical chemistry. Through this report we wish to induce greater interest of chemists in WT and to obtain greater benefits from using the WT-based techniques.

Abstract:A method of analysis of multiphase flow using wavelets transform for identifying the flow regimes was proposed．After the wavelet decomposition of the multiphase flow signal，the eigenvalue of different scales were calculated and were used to analyze the multiphase flow system．Methods for obtaining eigenvalue of gas-liquid two phase flow or gas-solid fluidized bed were developed．The results showed that the method was effective for identification of the regime of gas-liquid two phase flow and the transformation of gas-solid fluidized bed from fixed bed to fluidized bed．

Abstract:As every engineering student knows, any signal can be portrayed as an overlay of sinusoidal waveforms of assorted frequencies. But while classical analysis copes superbly with naturally occurring sinusoidal behavior-the kind seen in speech signals-it is ill-suited to representing signals with discontinuities, such as the edges of features in images. Latterly, another powerful concept has swept applied mathematics and engineering research: wavelet analysis. In contrast to a Fourier sinusoid, which oscillates forever, a wavelet is localized in time-it lasts for only a few cycles. Like Fourier analysis, however, wavelet analysis uses an algorithm to decompose a signal into simpler elements. Here, the authors describe how localized waveforms are powerful building blocks for signal analysis and rapid prototyping-and how they are now available in software toolkits.

Abstract:The wavelet packet transform. (WPT) is studied as a tool of multiresolution analysis for electroanalytical chemistry responses. Together with the study of the feature of WPT for white noise, an adaptive wavelet filter which can select the optimum critical level of related frequency band automatically was developed for various signals with lower frequency band, such as voltammograms, chromatograms, FIA responses. This adaptive wavelet filter can also be applied in the case of power supply interference existing.

Abstract:Digital signal is a function of time, which is some physical quantities long with time transformation, and the original signal is decomposed into a series of approximate component and details component by wavelet analysis. The wavelet transform is used in digital signal processing for simulation in MATLAB platform, and giving an example analysis. The result shows that the choice of suitable wavelet function makes the least amount of calculation, the high detection performance and the strong function. Wavelet transform in digital signal processing has a broad prospect of application.

Abstract:This article will start from the fundamental theory of wavelet Multiresolution Analysis and provide a brief summary of the advantages and limitations of various numerical methods based on wavelet bases. The objective of this article is to assist researchers in choosing the appropriate numerical methodologies for their particular physical issues. Furthermore, it will explore prospective advancements in wavelet‐based techniques, offering valuable insights for researchers committed to enhancing wavelet numerical methods in the field of computational physics. The quantitative study of many physical problems ultimately boils down to solving various partial differential equations (PDEs). Wavelet analysis, known as the "mathematical microscope", has been hailed for its excellent Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) capabilities and its basis functions that possess various desirable mathematical qualities such as orthogonality, compact support, low‐pass filtering, and interpolation. These properties make wavelets a powerful tool for efficiently solving these PDEs. Over the past 30 years, numerical methods such as wavelet Galerkin methods, wavelet collocation methods, wavelet finite element methods, and wavelet integral collocation methods have been proposed and successfully applied in the quantitative analysis of various physical problems. Abstract:To understand the wavelet analysis is put forward from engineering application. The relationship between wavelet function and scale function, the wavelet transform and the signal decomposition are given. Furthermore, we take advantage of the algorithm of wavelet packet to analyze two kinds of typical mechanical faults. Results show the wavelet packet is a more efficient method in comparison with windowed fourier transform(WFT) and wigner distribution(WD) in the field of machinery diagnosis.

Abstract:The disadvantage of harmonic wavelets is that the rate of decay is so low (proportional to x-1) that localization is not very precise. This is because the Fourier transform of the wavelets is restricted to a specified frequency band. This paper gives a method smoothing the boxcar spectrum of harmonic wavelets to improve localization in time domain. The paper presents a method which improves the harmonic wavelets so that the improved wavelets have simpler structure and adjustable decay rates in time domain. The improved harmonic wavelets are found to be more suitable than the conventional harmonic wavelets for vibration analysis because their rate of decay in time domain is much higher. The improved wavelets can also be computed by a numerically efficient algorithm based on the FFT. In this paper, the improved harmonic wavelets are used to analyze the dynamical behavior of a missile. Then a time-frequency map is obtained, which can trace how the missile vibration signal changes with time. Finally the physical cause represented by the signal is interpreted.

Abstract:Wavelet analysis is a new method called ‘numerical microscope’ in signal and image processing. It has the desirable advantages of multi-resolution properties and various basis functions, which fulfill an enormous potential for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). The numerical analysis with wavelet received its first attention in 1992, since then researchers have shown growing interest in it. Various methods including wavelet weighted residual method (WWRM), wavelet finite element method (WFEM), wavelet boundary method (WBM), wavelet meshless method (WMM) and wavelet-optimized finite difference method (WOFD), etc. have acquired an important role in recent years. This paper aims to make a comprehensive review and classification on wavelet-based numerical analysis and to note their merits, drawbacks, and future directions. And thus the present review helps readers identify research starting points in wavelet-based numerical analysis and guides researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:Wavelet transforms originated in geophysics in the early 1980s for the analysis of seismic signals. Since then, significant mathematical advances in wavelet theory have enabled a suite of applications in diverse fields. In geophysics the power of wavelets for analysis of nonstationary processes that contain multiscale features, detection of singularities, analysis of transient phenomena, fractal and multifractal processes, and signal compression is now being exploited for the study of several processes including space‐time precipitation, remotely sensed hydrologic fluxes, atmospheric turbulence, canopy cover, laud surface topography, seafloor bathymetry, and ocean wind waves. It is anticipated that in the near future, significant further advances in understanding and modeling geophysical processes will result from the use of wavelet analysis. In this paper we review the basic properties of wavelets that make them such an attractive and powerful tool for geophysical applications. We discuss continuous, discrete, orthogonal wavelets and wavelet packets and present applications to geophysical processes.

Abstract:Wavelet transform is a powerful technique well suited to non-stationary signal processing. The property of wavelet is determined by its basis function. In the fields of modal analysis, mechanical condition monitoring and fault diagnosis, In the fields of modal analysis, mechanical conitoring and fault diagnosis, impulse responses are very common signals to be analyzed. Laplace wavelet that is a complex, analytic, single-sided damped exponential is a desirable wavelet basis to analyze signals of impulse response. A correlation filtering approach is introduced using Laplace wavelet to identify impulse response from vibration signals. Successful results are obtained in diagnosing the leakage fault of intake valve of internal combustion engine, and identifying the natural frequency of hydro-generator axle.

Abstract:This paper introduces some applications in image processing with wavelets, such as edge detection, pattern recognition and image segmentation. Edge detection includes contour extraction and background removal for an illustration of gray - level, extraction of tumor region in color image and enlargement of type size of Chinese character. As for recognition of Chinese character or character at first, we can reduce the dimensionality of two dimensional patterns to one dimensional sign, then do wavelets decomposition for these one dimensional patterns, at last compute fractal dimension of each sub - pattern, so feature vectors can be obtained and used to recognition. The characters after affine transformation can also be recognized by a dyadic wavelet affine invariant function. At last we introduce two means of image segmentation. One is based on energy analysis, another is singularity analysis.

Abstract:We give a fairly comprehensive review of wavelets and of their application to density-functional theory (DFT) and to our recent application of a wavelet-based version of linear-response time-dependent DFT (LR-TD-DFT). Our intended audience is quantum chemists and theoretical solid-state and chemical physicists. Wavelets are a Fourier-transform-like approach which developed primarily in the latter half of the last century and which was rapidly adapted by engineers in the 1990s because of its advantages compared to standard Fourier transform techniques for multiresolution problems with complicated boundary conditions. High performance computing wavelet codes now also exist for DFT applications in quantum chemistry and solid-state physics, notably the BigDFT code described in this chapter. After briefly describing the basic equations of DFT and LR-TD-DFT, we discuss how they are solved in BigDFT and present new results on the small test molecule carbon monoxide to show how BigDFT results compare against those obtained with the quantum chemistry gaussian-type orbital (GTO) based code deMon2k. In general, the two programs give essentially the same orbital energies, but the wavelet basis of BigDFT converges to the basis set limit much more rapidly than does the GTO basis set of deMon2k. Wavelet-based LR-TD-DFT is still in its infancy, but our calculations confirm the feasibility of implementing LR-TD-DFT in a wavelet-based code.

Abstract:The concept of cyclic wavelet transform and its fast algorithm are introduced. A process of transforming original wavelet into corresponding cyclic wavelet is discussed in detail. A general formula of cyclic wavelet decomposition of a signal is given by wrapping round and adding process. A uniform description of even Daubechies cyclic wavelet transform matrix for a signal with the arbitrary power of 2 lengths is presented. The extraction procedure of impulse response via cyclic wavelet transform for structural system identification is introduced, then simulation of the presented procedure for two DOF and cantilever system is studied. In the simulation, ensemble-averaging performance and influence of using the Daubechies wavelet with variable length on the identification accuracy is discussed and compared with that of the extraction procedure based on the FFT.

Abstract:Wavelet transformation was applied to resolve overlapped chemical signals.By the use of wavelet convolution,the positions of overlapped signal peaks were accurately resolved and determined,even when the S/N ratio was relatively low,while it was not achieved by the method of 2nd derivation.In the further treatment with wavelet filtering,the peaks were clearly separated from the baseline with no change in peak positions and peak areas.Both the algorithms of wavelet convolution and wavelet filtering were applied to the testing of alcohol mixture containing ethanol,2-propanol,1-propanol,1-butanol,1-pentanol and 2-octanol,mixture of butanone and butanal,as well as the single-componental butanone and butanal.As proved by experimental result,algorithm of wavelet transformation was an effective way to resolve the overlapped signals and making the determination very satisfactory

Abstract:The precise real. time analysis of the chromatographic signal is the key technology in process detection using chromatographic instrument system. Chromatographic signal can be effectively analyzed with the wavelet transform. However, the performance of real-time is not satisfactory and become a bottleneck of its wide applications. As a fast algorithm of wavelet analysis, the multi-resolution analysis (MALLAT) algorithm can still not satisfy the requirements of real-time performance. Considering the MALLAT algorithm and the relationship between filter coefficients of the decomposition and reconstruction, a novel real-time wavelet analysis method based on finite impulse response filter was proposed in this paper. Simulation results showed that the real-time performance of proposed algorithm is greatly improved on the basis of same effects compared with the classical MALLAT wavelet algorithm.

Abstract:Spline wavelet and orthogonal wavelet are two widely used wavelet methods. In this paper, comparison of these two methodshas been made, including their algorithm, properties and results of signal processing in analytical chemistry signals. It is found that spline wavelet is more effective than orthogonal wavelet in processing high noise signals. The curves obtained from spline wavelet are closer to the theoretical ones than those obtained from orthogonal wavelet and the errors of spline wavelet are smaller than those of orthogonal wavelet.
