Measurement of Spatial Interaction between Central Towns Based on the Gravity Model

Abstract:According to space flow characteristics of the social and economical factors between central towns, we have improved the gravity model and the breaking-point formula. The weighted average of comprehensive strength and location condition of the central town was used to characterize the quality of the town first, and then the geo-metric average of transportation time and transportation costs between each pair of central towns was used to char-acterize the transportation distance in the gravity model. After that, we took the quality of the central town to re-place the population size in the breaking-point formula. Through the combination utilization of the improved gravi-ty model and breaking point formula, we achieved the quantitative measure of the intensity of spatial interaction be-tween each pair of central towns and the scope of gravity of each central town. The results of the case study of Jin-hua City show that:1) the intensity of spatial interaction between central towns presents a clear clustered space pat-tern, according to which the central towns can form a spatial integration of'two axes and four groups'in the fu-ture;2) the intensity of spatial interaction between central towns has a remarkable spatial variance feature, differ-entiation of measures should be taken to promote the coordinated development of the central towns;3) the scope of gravity of the central towns differs greatly in Jinhua, the attraction of the towns in central group is strongest, the southeast and west groups take the second place and the north group is weakest;4) according to the relationship of distance between the central towns and the breaking points, we can figure out the primary central town and the key node central town of the group. Therefore, the quantitative measure system of spatial interaction of the central towns formed by this research can provide theoretical and technical methods to support the exploration of the spa-tial interaction between central towns, which then provides the basis for spatial integration and coordinated develop-ment of central towns in a region.
How Transformational Leadership Affects Teacher Collective Efficacy? the Mediating Role of Professional Learning Communities and the Moderating Role of Trust

Abstract:This study explored the mediating role of professional learning communities (PLCs) and the moderating role of principals' perceived trust by teachers in the effect of transformational leadership on teacher collective efficacy from Chinese principals' perspective. A survey was conducted among 822 principals in China. Data were analysed using structural equation modelling and bootstrapping. The results showed that transformational leadership had a significant and positive effect on teacher collective efficacy. PLCs significantly and fully mediated the effect of transformational leadership on teacher collective efficacy. Principals' perceived trust by teachers significantly and negatively moderated the effect of transformational leadership on PLCs. This study advanced our understanding of how transformational leadership affected teacher collective efficacy, and added the crucial perspective of principals to research in this field. The study also enriches the existing literature on the relationship between principals' transformational leadership and teacher collective efficacy in Chinese context. Practical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Measurement is a crucial topic in social capital research.Specifically,measurement of collective soical capital is the very root of academic debates.Based on literature review,this paper proposes a multi_dimensional instrument to measure community social capital,and develops a scale accordingly.With the scale,data were collected from 50 communities during year 2006 to 2007.Statistical analysis shows that the proposed scale has 7 dimensions,with satisfactory relability and validity.In the last part,the paper briefly discusses unique characteristics of community social capital in urban China,and directions of future research.
The Measure and Transformation of Border Effect of Cross-border Tourism Region Based on Social Network

Abstract:Administrative boundary is one of the main factors of the cross-border tourism region space development.The border effect measure is the important yardstick to define its influence size.With indexes of social networks such as network density and centrality index,the paper constructs two types of measurement indicators which are the whole border effect and the node border effect,and also carries on empirical analysis for Dabie Mountain Tiantangzhai tourist area.The results showed that: ① The whole border effects of cross-provincial tourist areas are greater than that of cross-county tourist areas,the whole border effects on both sides of the same cross-border tourism region are also different;the proportion of significant node organizations of the cross-provincial border effect is higher than the cross-county border effect.And the non-significance nodes mainly concentrate on scenic area management committee,travel agency,scenic area business company and other social organizations.② The border effect depends on the level of administrative boundaries,geographic traffic,tourism development level and maturity differences on both sides of the border,emotional,cognitive and other factors.③ The source force of the cross-border tourist areas shielding effect into bridge effect comes from the symbiotic nature of tourism resources,the willing of stakeholders in the tourism market development,the fundamental force comes from the demand of regional tourism integration,and the corresponding transformation means are introduced.Based on social network the border effect analysis provides a new perspective for the study on cooperation mechanism of the cross-border tourism.

Abstract:Transportation infrastructure has been identified by the US Department of Homeland Security as one of sixteen critical infrastructure systems essential to the well-being of modern society. In this study, we propose a resilience-based framework for mitigating risk to road systems, considering both community and regional scales. We utilize recent developments in modern network theory to introduce a novel indicator based on system reliability and network connectivity to measure resilience and resilience improvement of a road transportation network. Our formulation systematically integrates the network topology, redundancy level, traffic patterns, and functionality during a community’s post-disaster recovery period, includes structural reliability (failure probability) of individual bridges in the network, and permits risk mitigation alternatives for improving transportation network resilience to be compared on a common basis. We propose a project ranking mechanism for identifying and prioritizing bridge maintenance or retrofit projects that are critical for effective pre-disaster risk mitigation of bridge systems. We provide a decision methodology to select optimal solutions among possible alternatives when the prospect of new construction offers opportunities to improve the resilience of the network by altering its existing topology. Finally, we conclude with an illustration of this resilience-based risk mitigation framework using a hypothetical bridge network susceptible to seismic hazards.
What neighborhood factors are critical to resident satisfaction with old neighborhoods? An integration of ground theory and impact asymmetry analysis

Abstract:As a national program, Chinese governments are making substantial investment on old neighborhood renovation to improve resident well-being. Understanding critical components of resident satisfaction with old neighborhoods is key to the success of this program. Drawing on the real experience of old neighborhood residents in Harbin, we applied the ground theory method to extract an extensive list of neighborhood attributes that potentially form neighborhood satisfaction. We then employed factor analysis and impact asymmetry analysis to identify the factor structure of neighborhood satisfaction. The results showed that most neighborhood factors have non-linear associations with old neighborhood satisfaction, challenging the linear assumption commonly hypothesized in the literature. Furthermore, housing and utility infrastructure, activity space, property management, neighborhood facilities, and the social environment are significant contributors to neighborhood satisfaction. The first three factors cause substantial dissatisfaction and should be prioritized for improvement to increase overall resident satisfaction with old neighborhoods.

Four Transformations of Chinese Quantitative Urban Research in the New Data Environment

Abstract:The paper provides an overview on the transformation of Chinese urban study driven by the emergence of new data environment in China in recent years. We firstly give a brief introduction on the new data environment, which has been made possible by the availability of big data and open data in recent years, as well as a review on the research progress both in China and abroad. It is followed by an analysis on four major transformations in quantitative urban study, supported by typical research cases, which are (1) transformation in spatial scale from high resolution but small coverage or wide coverage but low resolution to wide coverage with high resolution;(2) transformation in temporal scale from static cross-sectional to dynamic consistent; (3) transformation in granularity from land-oriented to human-oriented; (4) transformation in methodology from conventional research group to crowd-sourcing. The paper also points out that quantitative urban research is faced with problems like data bias, lack of long term analysis, lack of linkage to planning practice, etc.
The Social Governance Community in Transforming Neighborhoods: A Spatial Reconstruction Perspective

Abstract:The strategies of rapid urbanization and rural revitalization have fostered the emergence of transforming neighborhoods. Using a framework integrating multiple spatial attributes that embeds the administrative nature of space in its social nature and raises the level of its governance, this paper provides theoretical generalizations for the social governance communities of transforming neighborhoods on the basis of a typology that divides them into four types: social governance communities of individually constructed neighborhoods, social governance communities in post-demolition constructed neighborhoods, social governance communities in immigrant constructed neighborhoods, and social governance communities in collectively constructed neighborhoods. Social governance communities of transforming neighborhoods emerge in the course of spatial reconstruction and redevelopment of production. At the stage of space reconstruction, the administrative nature of space plays its part in developing differentiated spatial governance features, while the social nature of space takes effect through the establishment of four types of social governance community social networks: the loosely connected network, the multiple components network, the close interest network and the highly associated network. At the stage of space production, the social nature of space is embedded in governance and takes effect through the integration of top-down administrative control and bottom-up resident autonomy. Consequently, we see the generation of four governance strategies of administration that adjust the autonomy of social governance communities: "control—superficial governance," "guidance— deliberative governance," "support—collaborative governance," and "leading—governance by the people." In terms of theory, this study conducts a theoretical dialogue with the existing "controlled autonomy" and "autonomy with administrative elimination," and in terms of practice, it has implications for strengthening popular rule by neighborhood social governance communities and filling the ability gap in such communities.

Abstract:In our community study,no matter whether it is targeted at the power order,the state and society from the space perspective or whatever,the community research has a presupposed subject,the modern city dwellers.However,the people's own personality structure and internal regulations from the tradition to modern times of the Chinese urban residents should not be ignored.While,this is the micro-social mechanism of modernity and also is the first condition of the citizenship formation.In the real life,owners which have the unity of homogeneity are not just the actors in the election of the community research.In contrast,in the real life they have different life experiences,independent actors and the characteristics of diversity and heterogeneity.By studying the interaction mechanism in their daily life,and how the individual's personality and identity structure could be reconstructed under the crash is the key to understand their differences and regularity of participation in public activities.

Abstract:Measuring the strength of ties has been a fundamental task for a long time. However, most of previous work treated it as classifying a tie as strong or weak and were not able to quantitatively estimate the strength, which limits their scope of contribution. To tackle the problem, through leveraging user similarities and social interactions, we propose a latent variable model to calculate a continuous value that measures the strength. By bringing real users as judge, we demonstrate that the proposed method can outperform previous methods. Further, we utilize it to measure the strength of ties among a large set of microblogging users, and conduct statistical analysis on triads. We find that comparing to other types of triads, the one with three significantly strong ties are more likely to be created, which verifies the theory of sociology.

Abstract:Although different western ecological Marxists based their theories on the ecological dimension,their academic routes are actually different with each other.This paper wants to prove this viewpoint with the example of Alain Lipietz,James O'Connor and John Foster.John Foster did put his theoretical horizon into the area of productive process,but he finally only found the way out of ecological crisis from the angle of morality.James O'Connor figured out the theoretical route of inner contradiction of productive process from the angle which is different from Karl Marx,so that he only found the way out of ecological crisis from the horizon of politics.Alain Lipietz did construct his theory of social transformation on the horizon of productive process,but he overburdened his theory on the historical effect of regulation mode which makes his theory too much utopian characteristics.
The Influencing Mechanism of the Communities' Built Environment on Residents' Subjective Well-Being: A Case Study of Beijing

Abstract:There is a consensus toward quantitative environmental design in the information age, but the content and specific practices of its quantification have yet to be systematically studied. To enhance residents' subjective well-being through environmental design, this study includes 847 valid questionnaires across four types of communities and identifies different types of resident groups using correspondence analysis. Then, this study compares the differences in the built environment and subjective well-being using one-way ANOVA and analyzes their impact via regression analysis. The results indicate that residents in old communities have the highest subjective well-being (3.93/5) and built environment assessments, and residents in policy housing communities have the lowest subjective well-being (3.37/5) and built environment assessments. A resident's subjective well-being is more influenced by two types of built environment factors: architecture and landscape and the human–land relationship. Age, education level, public place usage, and the community's overall evaluation also significantly affect residents' subjective well-being. In the information age, quantitative design is the inevitable direction of future design. Through quantitative research, targeted design strategies can be proposed to serve community residents better in their communities and provide references for communities in other developing countries.

Once they are disseminated within a new societal landscape, adjustments and adaptation should be made. This paper investigates the entangled contexts of the social quality theory and its applicability to Asian societies. rough a comparative analysis of the key questions that this theory purports to answer, as well as its proposed answers and solutions, the study evaluates the purpose, features and functions of the theory. Moreover, in relation to four sorts of 'conditional factors', this article also proposes extending social quality studies into four approaches that should lead the studies beyond the level of description into new forms of theory. The article also explores the theory's power to explain the Asian social quality systems and their implications for global social development.

Abstract:Community was first put forward by Ferdinand T?nnies, which refers to a close and cohesive group relationship. In the later research and development, the meaning of community gradually became an objective and material carrier and lost its original analytical value. Combined with the classic theories of T?nnies and Weber, and the promotion of related research by Parker and Fei Xiao tong, we can think that community has a dual connotation of emotion and space. The core feature of the community is the spillover utility beyond the instrumental goal of the organization, and it has a certain spatial basis. This paper proposes a two-dimensional analysis framework of“instrumental-spillover”, which includes three progressive parts: the operable characteristics of community relations, the classification of community relations and two paths of community change. Based on the above analysis framework, the paper then discusses the impact of spatial environment change on community development and makes theoretical and practical case analysis on spatial utility. Finally, the paper tries to suggest the reconstruction and maintenance of community under the new technology and space environment.

Abstract:Based on the theory of urban morphology, traditional approahes usually focus on planar exploration, which have limitations and errors for mountainous cities. Began with urban profile, this essay aims to provide a new perspective in urbanization reinterpretation. As a case, a typical region in Chongqing, a famous mountainous city of China, from Shibati road to Hongyadong historical district is chosen for the urban profile line. Two aspects, including space construction and social humanistic environment are emphasized in prototype extraction in the urban profile. The final target is to provide some theoretical methods for urban design with regional features.

Abstract:As the work-unit system fell after economic reform in China, neighborhoods replaced work units as the primary provider of vital social services for the urban population and became a new social space for enhancing the quality of people's well-being. This study examined the neighborhood characteristics that influenced personal well-being of residents. Drawn by multistage sampling and administered by face-to-face interviews, the survey included a sample of 976 participants from 31 neighborhoods in urban Shanghai. Results indicate that neighboring behaviors enhanced subjective well-being of the young and middle-aged residents but had no impact on older people. Sense of community, on the other hand, was found to contribute to well-being of all age groups and was particularly strong among older people in more deprived neighborhoods. Findings inform development of community practice strategies for vitalizing community efficacy and fostering individual well-being in urban China. Recommendations for future research are made using the results of this study.

Abstract:AbstractSince the year of 2011 when urbanization of China reached 50%, “Urban Renewal” has become the hot topic among scholars from all industries of the society. Meanwhile, there appeared relevant discussion and researches against the methods of urban renewal. Compared with the previous developing mode which takes city expansion as the main stream, the comprehensive programme in large scale is preferred. At present, on facing the urban renewal situation switching from increment to stock. Small scale, local and progressive renewal method is gradually becoming the main stream. The community unit was one of the important parts of city structure, it is unique and could not be replaced on historical value and social meaning. In this way, when considering to melt it into current urban development, multi intervening is more required. It’s not only about the physical fusion in view of traditional meaning, but also includes the fusion of social environment. This thesis takes Xinhua Community of Shaoyang City as the case, regards the optimization and adjustment of all plots, as well as the coordination of benefit of all aspects as the entry point, with the grand background of “wiping off unitization”, to reconsider the relation between community units and all hierarchies of the city, as well as the way how community units blend into city.

Abstract:The urban reforms in China in 1984 introduced an urban land market and a housing market to Chinese cities and had profound impacts on urban structures. Using data from a 1998 survey and other sources in Beijing at the subdistrict level, this research found that differentiations of social areas were taking place in Beijing. Unlike western cities with the socioeconomic status and the family status as dominant forces in forming social areas, Beijing just began to experience the impact of differentiation of socioeconomic status, and the family structure factor was ineffective in Beijing due to decades of family planning. Factor analysis revealed four factors that underlay the social spatial structure in Beijing: (1) land use intensity as the dominant factor displaying a concentric zonal pattern; (2) neighborhood dynamics, mainly composed of the floating population ratio, featuring a sectoral pattern; (3) socioeconomic status exhibiting a combination of sectoral and zonal patterns, and (4) ethnicity resembling a multiple nuclei pattern. Superimposing the four factors generated a complex urban mosaic in Beijing.
