Abstract:There are two kinds of lexical metaphor:an extension of the literal meaning of a word and a word created exclusively for figurative use.On the basis of the working definition of a lexical metaphor and its motivation, the paper makes a contrastive analysis of 434 English and Chinese words from 12 semantic fields to reveal that i) the percentage of English lexical metaphor is higher than its Chinese counterpart,ii) there is more metaphorical meanings of an average English word,and 3) English lexical metaphors are less transparent.

Abstract:Translation and metaphor share some fundamental characteristics.Both metaphor and translation have to do with the transformation of signs;in both activities,the meaning results from integration of differed contexts;both of them emphasize the importance of "difference";and both activities have similar cognitive mode and functions.This paper thus argues that translation is metaphor and that further discussions on this nature of translation may provide us with a better understanding of the latter as well as insights into the studies of related issues.

Abstract:In the past three decades, there was a stirring of interest in metaphor study both at home and abroad. Experts from a wide range of disciplines such as linguistics, philosophy, psychology and computer science, have approached metaphor from different perspectives. The formation of this multidisciplinary research paradigm not only deepened the understandings of metaphorical phenomena, but also raised some urgent questions that needed to be solved. One of the questions was how to review the various research results within a unified framework. Taking semiotics as a meta-discipline analytic perspective, this paper explored the general research trend of current metaphor study within the framework of semiotics based on the historical evolution and development status of metaphor study.

Abstract:In this essay, I challenge the use of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) in the premodern Chinese setting. The dominant, implicit assumption in the literature is that conclusions reached by CMT on the ways in which cognition operates can be applied <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">in toto</em> and without qualification onto the makers of classical Chinese texts. I want to challenge this assumption and argue that textual evidence from premodern Chinese points to a different cognitive process. Differences in the use and conceptualization of image-based thinking as well as differences in the understanding of the relationship between words, images, and the world reveal a different cognitive process. However, I do not wish to argue for a total abandonment of the insights of CMT. Rather, I call for the need to properly qualify its findings in light of premodern Chinese use and conceptions of image-based language.

Abstract:In Chinese language, idioms are an essential part of its vocabulary and used in everyday expression. People like to use idioms for their power of expression, rhetoric skill and special effect, which are mainly created by the metaphors in most of the idioms. This paper introduces a tentative research on the idioms with metaphors based on the Chinese Idiom Knowledge Base(CIKB) by the Institute of Computational Linguistics at Peking University (ICL/PKU), in which the author expects to provide due help to research and applications on this topic. We believe that research as such will have benefit on NLP tasks like automatic metaphor recognition and processing, semantic role labeling etc. On the other hand, our work may also contribute to lexicography, Chinese linguistics study and teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

Abstract:Metaphor and metonymy, which are treated as two basic cognitive and conceptual mechanisms in cognitive linguistics, are highly interactive to each other. Metaphor from metonymy, as a complicated linguistic device and cognitive mechanism, has long been ignored although it helps create abundant implications and aesthetic value in poetry. This paper explores functions of metaphor from metonymy in meaning construction in classical Chinese poetry in order to offer a new perspective for the research of classical Chinese poetry and provide implications for appreciation, translation and teaching of classical Chinese poetry.

Abstract:Traditional rhetoric theory regards metaphor and metonymy as two literary rhetoric devices. Modern cognitive linguistics believes that metaphor does not only exist in the field of literature. Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device but also a way of thinking. However, the current research on metaphor and metonymy is still limited to the English language world. Hence, there is a lack of knowledge and research on metaphor and metonymy across languages and cultures. This paper begins with an overview of metaphor from the perspective of modern cognitive linguistics. Then, it expounds on the differences between metaphor and metonymy from two aspects of structure and function. Besides, this paper analyzes the differences between metaphor and metonymy with examples based on the Chinese cultural background.

Abstract:Metaphor is widely used in human communication. The cohort of scholars studying metaphor in various fields is continuously growing, but very few work has been done in bibliographical analysis of metaphor research. This paper examines the advancements in metaphor research from 2000 to 2017. Using data retrieved from Microsoft Academic Graph and Web of Science, this paper makes a macro analysis of metaphor research, and expounds the underlying patterns of its development. Taking into consideration sub-fields of metaphor research, the internal analysis of metaphor research is carried out from a micro perspective to reveal the evolution of research topics and the inherent relationships among them. This paper provides novel insights into the current state of the art of metaphor research as well as future trends in this field, which may spark new research interests in metaphor from both linguistic and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Abstract:Language is not just a network,but a complex one.Owing to the lack of appropriate research methodology,the traditional network view of language is no more than a metaphorical comprehension.However,with the introduction of complex network theories,it is now plausible to conduct large-scale empirical studies into language networks,which must be constructed upon solid foundations of linguistic theories.At the same time,complex network,instead of being treated as a metaphorical understanding of language,should be fully exploited as an efficient and effective approach in linguistic studies.The complex network properties not only reflect the stylistic and typological features of languages,but also provide valuable means to distinguish languages at various levels.While social network analysis can uncover the distinctive characteristics of language networks,complex network approaches can reveal the generality between linguistic system and other systems,social or natural.As a result,the integration of complex network approaches and social network analysis can contribute significantly to the quest for the underlying laws and properties of human language.

Abstract:In this paper, the Chinese to English Translation of conceptual metaphors in Song of a Pipa Player, a famous Chinese poem, is analyzed with references to the two English versions of Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang and Xu Yuanchong. After a review of the translation of metaphors, this paper adopts a cognitive approach to metaphor translation analysis. The three types of conceptual metaphors confined by Lakoff and Johnson1 are applied in the article. Finally, it was observed that three major translation methods are mainly employed in the two versions: retaining the source domain, replacing the original metaphor and deleting the metaphor.

Abstract:This report shows a novel classification of the Chinese metaphorical and metonymic idioms based on the Spreading-Activation Model (SA Model). Identified first are three features of the source domain within the Chinese metaphorical and metonymic idioms: (1) the relationship between the source and target domains, (2) the number of source domains within idioms, and (3) the inherent characteristics of the source domain. Then drawing on the SA Model, this report arrives at a novel classification of the Chinese metaphorical and metonymic idioms into four categories: (1) Directional activation Idioms, (2) Cooperative activation Idioms, (3) Spreading activation Idioms, and (4) Superimposed activation Idioms. Discussion is made on each category and a continuum of cognitive difficulty is established with respect to understanding different categories. This classification is of great help within the realm of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

Abstract:Metaphor is a pervasive phenomenon in natural language. This paper focuses on metaphor identification. Based on the linguistic definition, an improved classification system of Chinese metaphors is presented, classifying metaphorical language into two categories: referential metaphor with ten subclasses and collocational metaphor with five subclasses. Furthermore, a novel pattern matching algorithm on dependency tree is proposed for detecting potential metaphor occurrences and two quantified measures, referential adaptability degree (RA) and colloactional adaptability degree (CA), are introduced for determining metaphor category. Finally, a computational model for Chinese metaphor identification and classification is developed.

Abstract:In Tang poetry, metaphorical images serve as powerful tools for poets to convey their emotions and experiences in a vivid and imaginative manner. These images, drawn from nature, mythology, history, and daily life, allow poets to create rich and layered meanings that resonate with readers across time and culture. The use of metaphorical images in Tang poetry reflects the deep poetic tradition and artistic sensibility of Chinese literature. Translating metaphorical images from Tang poetry into English poses a unique challenge for translators due to the cultural and linguistic differences between the two languages. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity for translators to exercise creativity and interpretation in conveying the essence of the original poems. By carefully selecting appropriate English equivalents for the metaphorical images, translators can capture the beauty and complexity of Tang poetry for English-speaking audiences. Through a comparative analysis of translation strategies employed in representative cases of Tang poetry, this paper combines case study and corpus analysis methods to explore the concept and function of metaphorical images in Tang poetry, analyzes the possibility and importance of its English translation, and provides a comparative analysis of translation strategies for metaphorical images using representative cases of Tang poetry translation. It reveals the rationality and fidelity of translating metaphorical images.

Grammatical structures and metaphorical content in Chinese idioms

Abstract:The aim of this research is to clarify the typology and relationship of grammatical structures and metaphorical expressions within Chinese idioms. In this study, a corpus of 30,000 Chinese idioms was compiled from various idiom dictionaries, and 1,000 idioms were randomly selected, annotated, and categorized based on their internal syntactic structures, grammatical functions in sentences, metaphor types, and metaphorical content for statistical analysis. The innovation of the research lies in employing a corpus to conduct a quantitative analysis of the prevalent syntactic structures and the most common types of metaphorical usage found in Chinese idioms, as well as to explore the quantified relationships between them. The findings reveal that Parallel Structure, Attributive Structure, and Subject-Predicate Structure are the most prevalent internal syntactic structures of Chinese idioms, while the structural metaphor is the most widely used conceptual metaphor. However, no significant correlation was observed between the internal syntactic structure of Chinese idioms and metaphorical content, grammatical function in sentences.

Metaphorical Language Change Is Self-Organized Criticality

Abstract:One way to resolve the actuation problem of metaphorical language change is to provide a statistical profile of metaphorical constructions and generative rules with antecedent conditions. Based on arguments from the view of language as complex systems and the dynamic view of metaphor, this paper argues that metaphorical language change qualifies as a self-organized criticality state and the linguistic expressions of a metaphor can be profiled as a fractal with spatio-temporal correlations. Synchronously, these metaphorical expressions self-organize into a self-similar, scale-invariant fractal that follows a power-law distribution; temporally, long range inter-dependence constrains the self-organization process by the way of transformation rules that are intrinsic of a language system. This argument is verified in the paper with statistical analyses of twelve randomly selected Chinese verb metaphors in a large-scale diachronic corpus.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of metaphor in white papers has proliferated as it plays a significant role in cognitive processing. In order to shed light on the intricate relationship between humans and the natural environment, this study focuses on the analysis of metaphor usage in a particular white paper titled “China’s Green Development in the New Era” within the field of ecopolitics. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, namely the utilization of a self-built corpus and case studies, is employed to categorize the translation strategies of metaphors. The findings of this study demonstrate that the metaphors utilized in the white paper effectively capture elements of social cognition and ideology. Moreover, with the assistance of part-of-speech tagging tools, it is observed that most translated metaphors strive to maintain the salient features of the source text, aiming to achieve equivalence in both form and meaning.
