Abstract:Owing to the growing environmental concerns, super-critical and ultra-supercritical coal-fired power plants dominate the electricity generation with the demand of near-zero air pollutant emission in China. Therefore, it is highly expected to assess the environmental impact and optimize the design at global and local levels. Exergoenvironmental analysis is a valid approach to investigate the formation of environmental impacts (EIs) associated with energy conversion systems at the component level. It generates information crucial for designing systems with a lower overall environmental impact, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis. A 600 MW supercritical coal-fired system with and without dust, SO2 and NOx mitigation controls was analyzed. Heat transfer in the boiler, condenser(CND), low pressure cylinder(LP), air preheater(APH) show high potential to decrease the environmental impact due to high exergy destructions. The deaerator (DEA), induced draft fan(IDF), forced draft fan(FDF) should be focussed on construction design and manufacturing optimization. Purification units reveal high benefit for reducing EI produced by coal combustion, but there is a large space for the EI saving for it. The specific EI of electricity in China is much greater than European.

Abstract:China's demand for energy in general, and for electricity, is expected to continue to increase for at least the next several decades. Environmental and financial considerations are amongst the major factors that will determine the sources used for generating electricity. In this paper, we compare the cost of supplying electricity from coal, hydro and nuclear facilities to China's Eastern coastal areas. If the full system costs are compared, the cost of electricity from nuclear and hydro power plants is about the same in most cases and about 20% more than the cost from conventional coal-fired plants. This may be a reasonable premium to pay for reducing the local, regional, and global environmental impacts associated with the increased use of coal.

This article combs the nuclear power plant radiation environmental management systems of several countries, takes the domestic and foreign management of radioactive effluent discharge from nuclear power plants as a starting point, analyses and compares the laws and standards related to radioactive effluents from nuclear power plants in France, the United States, China, and South Korea. In this paper, the management improvement of radioactive effluent discharge system of Chinese nuclear power plants has been discussed.

Abstract:The liquid,gas and solid radioactive waste treatment systems of AP1000,EPR and CPR1000 are introduced and compared briefly in the paper. Their source terms are compared with the discharge limits of GB 6249-1986. The environmental radiological impacts of these three types of PWR NPPs are assessed and compared based on an inland site condition. The results show the environmental impacts of these three types of PWR NPPs are acceptable.

Abstract:An overhaul of China's complicated electricity pricing system and the introduction of 'polluter-pays' levies for generators could help to resolve the environmental and health problems caused by the country's power stations. The study looked at the Mawan Electricity Plant in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. It found that the economic cost of the environmental damage caused by the plant was substantial and affected people for hundreds of kilometers around.

Abstract:China's coal-fired power industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation. From a historical perspective, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of the coal power sector in China, to understand the cause of the transition and where its future lies. Through the interactions among landscape, regime and niches, China's coal-fired power industry has developed cleaner and more efficient, which positively mitigated the local pollution. Yet the decarbonization in the power sector is unsatisfactory. Due to its dominating role and nature of high-carbon emitting, the coal power sector has always been a big challenge during China's climate actions. Although the goal of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 demonstrates China's ambitions, expanding coal-fired power generation capacity hinders climate change mitigation and low-carbon transition. In this regard, we discuss the guidelines for the future high-quality coal-fired power development to provide recommendations for policy-makers and industry stakeholders. China's coal power sector should commit to the vision of deep decarbonization by 2050. Abstract:Although nuclear power has gradually played an important role in world's energy consumption, there is still controversy because of the threat of releasing harmful radioactive substances. The public's incomplete understanding of nuclear power's risks and benefits has led to the Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) effects all over the world, especially in developing countries. It is important to analyze the role that nuclear energy plays for human society in a multidimensional manner. Previous studies have investigated the benefits and risks of nuclear power, which mainly focus on economic benefits, and carbon or pollution emissions reduction benefits. Quantitative study on the comparison of health risks and benefits has been lacking. By taking China as an example, we compared the health risks and benefits of nuclear power using a health impact assessment methodology framework. The results show that, under normal operating conditions, the maximum annual disability adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by a single nuclear power plant would be 2.2 h and 11.4 h in 2020 and 2030, respectively. In 2030, the DALYs of the population exposed for 8 h within approximately 80 km of a plant would be between 108 and 9199 years in a severe accident scenario. The health benefits of nuclear power were calculated by avoided DALYs of reduced SO2, NOx, and PM10 of coal-fired power substituted by nuclear power. The avoided DALYs would be 501.0-1658.1 years and 676.4-2942.4 years in 2020 and 2030, respectively. Considering that risk equals consequence multiplied by the probability, developing nuclear power is risk-benefit feasible. More precise risk prevention, control measures and emergency plans (for both normal operation and accident conditions) of nuclear power plant should be put into place, and risk communication should be strengthened (e.g., bringing the scientific-based risk-benefit assessment results to the public, etc.) to reduce the public's NIMBY effects. Abstract:In China, where energy activities, predominantly driven by fossil fuel combustion, account for nearly 90% of the country's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and coal power alone contributes over 40%, the shift towards carbon neutrality is a critical national ambition. This study conducts a comprehensive comparison of the environmental impacts of solar photovoltaic power generation (SPPG) and coal power, employing both life cycle assessment and ecological footprint analysis. We meticulously analyze the complete lifecycle of SPPG, pinpointing key stages of GHG emissions, and offer nuanced, localized policy recommendations. Our findings indicate that a 1 kWp SPPG module emits 1,601.18 kg of GHGs over its lifespan, equating to 1.35 kg/kW·h per unit of electricity produced—substantially lower than the 4.81 kg/kW·h emitted by coal power, thus highlighting the latter's heightened environmental detriment. Additionally, this study assesses the ecological footprint of both energy sources in Ningxia. SPPG emerges with an ecological surplus, showcasing a per capita footprint of 0.0342 hm 2 , compatible with Ningxia's ecological capacity. In stark contrast, coal power exhibits a sustained ecological deficit over the past 5 years, with a growing per capita footprint of 0.6529 hm 2 , underscoring its unsustainability. This research provides a detailed comparative analysis of the environmental impacts of SPPG and coal power in Ningxia, offering valuable insights for energy policymakers and industry stakeholders. It underscores the urgent need for industrial restructuring towards more sustainable and renewable energy sources, aligning with China's broader objectives of environmental preservation and achieving carbon neutrality.

Abstract:There is an ongoing debate about the use of nuclear energy all over the world.In March 2011,the Fukushima Nuclear leak made the international society reconsider the security and extensibility of nuclear technology.The extents to which scientists and the public accept nuclear technology differs distinctly.This paper deeply analyzes the acceptances of nuclear energy technology after Fukushima nuclear leak between scientists and the public and their difference.Then the reasons for this difference are discussed from the perspective of determinants.Finally,this paper proposes several policy suggestions about the strategy for the future nuclear energy development in China.

Abstract:Based on a nationwide representative county-level dataset from China, this article empirically examines the spillover effects of air pollution from neighboring coal-fired power plants on local mortality rates due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. We combine data on power plants' industrial output with information on wind direction and speed to proxy for air pollution, and find that air pollution from neighboring power plants indeed has significant negative effects on local public health. The resulting treatment costs are also enormous. Our findings shed light on the necessity of intergovernmental cooperation in environmental governance.

Abstract:China has become the primary energy consumer in the world, consuming 48.2% of the world's coal in 2010. Of this percentage, 48.0% of China's coal consumption is used by the power generation industry, which causes unavoidable environmental problems in the country. This paper presents complete life cycle modeling and a comparative assessment of current clean coal power generation technologies in China, including a state-of-the-art commercial ultra super-critical system. In this study, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is adopted for energy and environment analysis, followed by a brief economic discussion. Incorporating up-to-date data and country-speciﬁc situations, the present work covers all up-stream stages of the electricity life cycle before ﬁnal consumption: coal mining, coal transportation, and coal power generation. The modeling results show that ultra super-critical systems (USC) have the highest life cycle energy efficiency due to the highest net generating efficiency and the lowest plant auxiliary power consumption among the cases examined. The global warming potential (GWP) scores show reverse dependencies of net generating efficiency. An integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) was demonstrated to be the cleanest technology and has the lowest scores in most of the life cycle impact categories, in particular in acidification potential (AP) and photo-oxidant formation potential (POCP). IGCC ranks as the highest in capital costs due to its complexity, while USC and super-critical systems are among the lowest in capital cost because of their commercialization in China. Evaluation of coal power generation combined with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) shows that the CCS technologies can reduce the total life cycle CO2 emission from coal power plants substantially, although higher levels of CO2 are generated from the extra energy consumption by the CCS.

Abstract:Coal is one of the major energy resources in China, accounting for approximately 70 % of primary energy consumption. Many environmental problems and human health risks arise during coal exploitation, utilization, and waste disposal, especially in the remote mountainous areas of western China (e.g., eastern Yunnan, western Guizhou and Hubei, and southern Shaanxi). In this paper, we report a thorough review of the environmental and human health impacts related to coal utilization in China. The abundance of the toxic trace elements such as F, As, Se, and Hg in Chinese coals is summarized. The environmental problems (i.e., water, soil, and air pollution) that are related to coal utilization are outlined. The provenance, distributions, typical symptoms, sources, and possible pathways of endemic fluorosis, arsenism, and selenosis due to improper coal usage (briquettes mixed with high-F clay, mineralized As-rich coal, and Se-rich stone coal) are discussed in detail. In 2010, 14.8, 1.9 million, and 16,000 Chinese people suffered from dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, and arsenism, respectively. Finally, several suggestions are proposed for the prevention and treatment for endemic problems caused by coal utilization.

Abstract:China's ongoing commitment to overseas infrastructure investment through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has ignited concern over environmental impacts. The BRI's environmental impacts will be determined by China's decisions not only on what kinds of projects to fund, but also how those projects end up operating relative to projects without Chinese involvement. It is critical to understand current performance and establish a baseline understanding of the environmental impacts of China's overseas projects thus far. We examine the environmental performance of coal-fired power plants in Asia in terms of carbon dioxide emissions intensity. Using generating unit-level data and a regression-based analysis, we estimate the comparative emissions intensity of overseas coal plants owned, designed, or constructed, by Chinese and non-Chinese companies. We find that Chinese coal plants tend to have significantly lower emissions intensity than similar non-Chinese coal plants. Given that total emissions rather than relative emissions intensity primarily drive the global warming impact of a plant, we also estimate total annual emissions and committed lifetime emissions of the plants in our dataset. We find that while Chinese plants may have relatively lower emissions intensity, their total emissions will grow as a proportion of the coal plant emissions in Asia over time.

Abstract:Under price uncertainty of the power generation and carbon emissions constraint,the value are analyzed and compared between coal-fired power technology and nuclear technology by established a real option investmentmodel.The result shows:first of all,nuclear power technology may be more valuable than the coal-fired power technology.On one hand,it illustrate the decision maker who ignored the charge of carbon emissions from coal-fired electricity.On the other hand,it shows that,technology lockon based on coal power generation has an impacton the investment decision.Secondly,the electricity price uncertainty has more influence on nuclear power technology than coal-fired power generation technology,the same technology progress rate will not be sufficient to ensure coal power generation technology which is more valuable.Thirdly,after the expected investment time analysised it shows the investment threshold of coal-fired power generation is lower than nuclear power.Last but not least,from the point of"carbon lock-in",the paper explained why China's energy structure locks in coal power generation technology.

Abstract:Coal occupies an absolute advantage in the primary energy structure of China. However, the production of coal poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and human health. In order to quantify the environmental impact of coal mining, this study used the life cycle assessment (LCA) method to analyse the life cycle of coal mining from the cradle-to-gate. Midpoint results based on ReCiPe 2016 indicated that coal mining had a remarkable impact on human carcinogenic toxicity, marine ecotoxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity, fossil resource scarcity, and human non-carcinogenic toxicity. The contribution analysis revealed that material production was identified as the main cause of environmental impacts, followed by energy consumption and process emissions. Steel consumption, electricity production, and wastewater discharge were identified as key environmental pollution processes. In addition, specific environmental pollution substances and their contributions were recognized from the source, and a sensitivity analysis between key processes and key impact categories was carried out. At the endpoint level, coal mining led to the most damage to human health, followed by ecosystems and resources. This study is of reference significance in guiding the construction of green mines and achieving sustainable development of coal resources.

Abstract:Coal abatement actions for pollution reduction often target total coal consumption. The health impacts of coal uses, however, vary extensively among sectors. Here, we modeled the sectorial contributions of coal uses to emissions, outdoor and indoor PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 mm) concentrations, exposures, and health outcomes in China from 1970 to 2014. We show that in 2014, residential coal accounted for 2.9% of total energy use but 34% of premature deaths associated with PM2.5 exposure, showing that effects were magnified substantially along the causal path. The number of premature deaths attributed to unit coal consumption in the residential sector was 40 times higher than that in the power and industrial sectors. Emissions of primary PM2.5 were more important than secondary aerosol precursors in terms of health consequences, and indoor exposure accounted for 97% and 91% of total premature deaths attributable to PM2.5 from coal combustion in 1974 and 2014, respectively. Our assessment raises a critical challenge in the switching of residential coal uses to effectively mitigate PM2.5 exposure in the Chinese population.

Abstract:The evolution of energy system occupies an important position in economic development and quality of life. Influenced by the energy endowment in China, developing the coal-based clean energy industry has been regarded as a guaranteed path to realizing the clean and efficient use of coal resources. However, an evaluation paradigm that could systematically assess the health impacts of airborne pollution in this industry is still lacking, which is our concern. Combining with life cycle analysis, probabilistic risk models, and health impact models, this study proposes a series of models which are consistent enough to unite pollutant concentration, health risk, and health impact, and equip assessment results with more intuitive significance of life and economic loss. Further, case studies for three typical clean coal technologies, namely, coal mining, coal-fired power generation, and coal liquefaction, are presented to verify the reliability of these models. Results show that the most severe health impact occurred at the worksite of driving face, the substage of coal combustion, and coal mining and processing, respectively, for the three technologies. Further, coal dust brought about the greatest pollution to coal mining and coal liquefaction, and for coal-fired power generation, SO 2 , NO 2 , and PM 10 were the commonest and toughest pollutants. In conclusion, the proposed evaluation paradigm can help to find out the worksite, substage, and airborne pollutant with the most severe impact and is more intuitive to provide references for minimizing or eliminating environmental pollution. Additionally, three aspects of implications are confirmed in this study, namely, social mobilization promoting, government policy making, and environmental pollution prejudging.
