Abstract:The model of political party leading the army is unique and basic framework, which is important in the development of Chinese political system in 20th century. It originated from Army—Founding of Huang Pu Military Institution and was created by Sun Zhongshan. Then Chinese Community Party perfected this model in the Chinese Great Revolution. It played an important role of adjusting the Civil—Military Relations, reforming army system and constructing modern army strength, removing rival principalities and accomplishing unity.

Abstract:During the Republican period,there were different regional martial groups which affected national affairs deeply.The Yunnan Army led by General Zhu Peide became stronger in the queasy years,gradually accepted the leadership of Sun Yat-sen and Kuomintang,shook off provincial features and became part of the Kuomintang's Central Army.It was an unwonted example and indicated that some traditional military officers had changed into modern professional army men.

Abstract:As a strategist,Qi Jiguang actively threw himself into the war against the Japanese pirates in the frontier crisis of the Late Ming Dynasty.He took full charge of the defense affairs and formed his own military thought in his long-standing military career.Qi Jiguang's military thought went through such stages as foundation,formation,development and improvement,and had two theoretical sources:his military learning with the Seven Military Classics as textbooks and the Four Books and Five Classics as the core of Confucian teachings.The main contents of Qi's military thought include theories of troop training,military officer training and instructions of war.The theories are characterized with being practical,being close to actual combat and stressing actual effect,thereby are highly appraised by the later generations.

Abstract:To study on Qing dynasty government's reform strategies on the Cheiftain in Huang River area was very meaningful,as it can help people to understand the martial and the political strategies of Qing dynasty.The Chieftain system in Huang River area was started in Yuan dynasty,and became perfectly in Ming dynasty.Although the central government of Qing dynasty carried out some bureaucratical strategies on large-scalely in the national minority of the Southwest region,the base of the Chieftain system in Huang River area was not changed obviously.However,the government of Qing dynasty adopted some various measures to adjust and reform the Chieftain system,as the result,the Chieftain system in Huang River area were declined gradually at last.

Abstract:This article aims to understand the military strategy of the Chinese Communist Party more clearly by clarifying its achievements and limitations through a study on the military construction in the early days of the Communist Party of China. The CCP pursued a revolution through force, but this was impossible without building a strong military. The First United Front(國共合作) provided an opportunity to expand the power of the Chinese Communist Party within the organization of the Nationalist Party and to secure military cadres capable of building military power at the Huangpu Military Academy. Although it was insignificant in terms of taking over the overall military power, the First United Front gave the CCP an opportunity to develop into a revolutionary force by independently possessing an army. The Communist Party of China, which experienced several failed armed uprisings, tried to build its own revolutionary army. The Chinese Communist Party made efforts to normalize the military by reorganizing the military command organization, enacting military regulations, and establishing special military units and military schools. As a result, between 1930 and 1931, the main force of the Red Army increased to 150,000, and the operational capabilities of the Red Army also improved. In terms of doctrine, the Red Army also established basic tactical principles such as the 16-character formula(十六字戰法). In general, it cannot be denied that the Chinese Communist Party’s series of measures and efforts for military construction, which began in 1930, improved the Red Army’s ability to wage war to a certain extent. However, considering that the Red Army did not have the ability to produce even basic weapons on its own, military construction in the early days of the CCP clearly had its limits.

Abstract:At different times of his life, Chiang Kai-shek entertained three different images of himself: saint, hero and revolutionary guru. The orientation of his reading roughly corresponded with these roles: to be a saint, he emphasized moral learning and self-improvement; to be a hero, he stressed military strategy and politics; and to be the guru for a revolution, he had an enduring interest in the histories of revolutions in other nations. He seldom took an interest in books about knowledge, leisure or entertainment, which had little connection with these three roles. Chiang was closer to a traditional Chinese intellectual than to his predecessor Dr. Sun Yat-sen in his knowledge structure, value orientation and behaviour codes. Although Mao Zedong was as devoted to old Chinese books as Chiang, Mao preferred history and classical literature while Chiang preferred Confucian classics. Mao read old books from a historical materialist point of view, whereas Chiang synthesized “Three Principles of the People” (Sanmin zhuyi) with Confucian doctrines.

Abstract:The study adopts a critical discourse analysis approach to Chiang Kai-shek's (CKS) internal nationalist propaganda and authoritarian discourse practices, investigating his New Year and National Day speeches in the 1950s. Authoritarian characteristics are evident in strategies such as legitimation, reification, or myth-making, in the antagonist categorisation of Self versus Other, in Self-glorification and the idolisation of the dead, in the hegemonic creation of commonality and unity, and in the metaphorical conceptualisation of reality. Patterns of idolising the dead serve to impose and legitimise CKS's worldview among his citizens. Another pattern is CKS's invention of imaginary compatriots within the “enslaved China” waiting for the best time to overthrow the “bandits”' rule. Reference to these imaginary agents indirectly presents to his audience a false but better impression of the Self, and a dimmer view of the communist bandits. A third pattern is CKS's metaphorical use of language, such as references to communist China as a puppet regime of Russia.

Abstract:In China,the situation of Chiang Kai-shek studies have the close relationship with the national political development and the academic atmosphere.Before 1978,take Chen Boda\'s "People\'s Public Enemy Chiang Kai-shek" as representative,carried on the comprehensive critique to Chiang.Since then,the Chiang Kai-shek studies have started from "served for politics" to "the scholarly research" reforming.After entering the new century,Chiang Kai-shek studies,regardless of has the considerable development in both quantities and qualities.The look forward to the future,the Chiang Kai-shek studies will be still have challenges,and the scholars need to work hard to pursue "a closely real" Chiang Kai-shek.

Abstract:The military art of Ancient China, which was developed on the basis of the military-theoretical heritage of Sun Tzu, Wu Tzu, contains many examples of achieving victory in war through military cunning, improving tactical techniques of armed struggle, as well as information and psychological impact on the enemy’s troops and population. The era of the Three Kingdoms in the history of China occupies a relatively short period of time – 220–280 A.D., however, the qualitative characteristics of the military aspect deserve special attention. The mili-tary leadership abilities of Cao Cao, Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi and other commanders clearly demonstrate the pro-gress in the development of strategy and tactics, military engineering construction of the Celestial Empire. Along with land forces, consisting of infantry and cavalry, there is a river flotilla, capable of solving problems of a strategic nature. The confrontation of the three kingdoms is reflected in the historical chronicles of Chen Shou, the epic of Luo Guan-zhong, numerous studies by Chinese and foreign experts. Sun Tzu’s recommen-dations and instructions were applied in the United States to wage psychological warfare against Russia.

Abstract:As a leader of the Republic of China, Chiang Kai-shek carried on Sun Yat-sen's legacy of using diplomacy as a force in the modern era and planned to rely on diplomacy to revise China's unequal treaties with foreign powers. Chiang elaborated on Sun's ideas and maintained that diplomacy as a war without battles worked more effectively than wars with battles. Faced with the threat of Japanese invasion, he upheld the strategy of using one foreign country to control another. He expected the outbreak of a war between Japan and the Soviet Union or between Japan and the United States so that a war between Japan and China could be avoided. Chiang engaged in active diplomacy aimed at turning these expectations into reality. His diplomatic strategy had an impact during the Anti-Japanese War.

Abstract:The Long March of the main Red Army in the Central Soviet Areas in 1934 was a well-prepared military operation.The Communist International and the Central Committee of the CCP made great efforts on its behalf,among which the CCP's work to win over and make use of the Guangdong faction was particularly important.The reasons why the Guangdong faction let itself be used by the CCP were naturally related closely with its own interests.In fact,southern Jiangxi's unique political environment composed of the Nanjing faction,the Guangdong faction and the CCP exerted an important influence not only on the Long March,but also on the CCP's survival and development in the region in the 1930s.When analyzed from this angle,we surprisingly find traces of Chiang Kai-shek's involvement looming behind the CCP's successful breakout from their encirclement.Though these traces are very unusual,uncertain and difficult to pin down,the appearance of more historical data might make them clearer.

Abstract:The contradictions and confrontations between China and the USA in the later period of the Resistance War againstJapan disclosed in Chiang Kai-shek’s diary were far more grave than most people today realize. After the breakout of thePacific War,the USA’s actions on several issues,such as its preference of European strategy over Asian strategy,were se-verely dissatisfying to Chiang. Chiang gradually began to doubt the sincerity of Roosevelt’s b0ldness,motivations,and sup-port for China. Chiang thought that the USA was attempting to dominate the Far East and worried that China would competewith the USA for the leadership of Asia in the future.The Cairo Conference was a very important meeting of the heads of al-lied countries during the War,but Chiang’s attitude toward the conference was much less positive than people have hithertothought,and China kept a low profile in the preparatory work and conference meetings. The influence of China’s internalaffairs on the Stilwell Incident cannot be overlooked. Chiang regarded Sun Ke as the leader favored by the USA. Chiang Kai-shek thought that militarily the USA would replace him with Stilwell,and politically replace him with Sun Ke.To a cer-tain extent this judgment affected Chiang’s handling of the issue of Stilwell’s command power. As the Chiang-Stilwell struggle intensified,Chiang on one occasion considered resigning his post. Although there were no big confrontations be-tween China and the USA after Stilwell was recalled,the distrust on both sides would resurface whenever the situation hadany changes.

Abstract:After the September 18th Incident, Wong Wenhao, a geologist, got acquainted with Chiang Kai-shek and entered the National Government. At the beginning of his political career, Wong Wenhao was mainly responsible for the resource investigation and mine industry related to his major. He was a “technocrat”.After the comprehensive Anti-Japanese War, Wong Wenhao was in charge of wartime economic construction and expanded to industrial production, resource development, barter trade and other undertakings. As his authority expanded, he became involved in political disputes. Around the victory of the Anti-Japanese War,Wong took up the high post in the Kuomintang and the vice premier of the Executive Yuan, and has gradually become a “ professional bureaucrat”. In 1948, Wong Wenhao became the “ Premier” of the Government and was deeply involved in bureaucratic and factional disputes. As a typical example of“scholars engaging in politics” during Republican China, Wong Wenhao’s experience showed that the scholars would change after the longer time of service in the political system. In contrast, ideal scholars made little changes to the system, while officialdom may make greater changes to scholars.

Abstract:After the peaceful settlement of the Xi'an Incident,some members of the Kuomintang Party(KMT)pro-posed to single out the day when Chiang Kai-shek was released back to Nanjing as the National Resuscitation Day. Around the Anti-Japanese War,the KMT authorities held various kinds of activities to celebrate the day across the country.The KMT took advantage of such a festival to establish the image of Chiang Kai-shek’s as the leader and the political authority emphasizing unity.The KMT authorities also took the advantage of such a festival to enhance the common memory of the mass for the Xi'an Incident,instilling an ideology of“one doctrine,one government,and one leader",mobilized the mass to devote themselves to the Anti-Japanese War,and promoted a campaign of Chiang Kai-shek worship.The National Resuscitation Day,however,had been always in an awkwardness ever since with limited practical effect.

Abstract:Abstract China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and its various branches carry the prudent legacy of its ancient history. Since its creation in 1927, time and again, the PLA has acted as an effective arm of the vanguard party in establishing and securing the Heaven. Following the theoretical underpinnings of China’s paramount leader Mao, today the PLA is a formidable force capable of conducting operations in every domain of war. However, under President Xi Jinping, the PLA has undergone considerable restructuring and modernization. This article aims to briefly understand and analyse such structural reconfigurations and modernization plans. It uses academic, journalistic, and Sino-American official sources in exploring the PLA’s restructuring and modernization. It concludes that the PLA has undergone massive structural reconfiguration and modernization in terms of material and doctrine. It also highlights that the renewed deployments of the PLA under a renewed doctrinal awakening and a strategic thought could have a great impact on its future operations.

Abstract:Hailancha was a very important military officer during the Second Jinchuan War in the reign of Emperor Qianlong. At the beginning,his relationship with the commander-in-chief Wenfu was not well,but after Wenfu had been killed by the rebellions,Hailancha played a key role in the remedial action. Agui succeeded the commander position and trusted Hailancha totally,which led him to gain big achieve-ments in the war. However,Hailancha also had shortcomings such as wanton slaughter and rough temper.
