Abstract:Objective This study measured N-acetylaspartate ( NAA) , choline ( CHO) and creatine (Cr) in hippocampal regions of patients with schizophrenia using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (H1 MRSI). Methods H1 MRSI were performed on the right and left hippocampal regions in 20 male patients with schizophrenia and 20 normal men. The ratios of NAA/Cr and CHO/Cr were determined. Repeated measures analysis of variance ( ANOVA) was used to test for group differences, with group as between-subjects factor and side as within-subjects factor. Results The CHO/Cr ratio in patients (left: 1. 03±0. 22; right: 1. 00 ±0.23) was significant higher than that in normal controls (left: 0. 95± 0.16; right: 0. 97±0.16) ( F = 6. 896, P = 0. 013). The NAA/Cr ratio had no significantly difference between both groups ( patients, left: 1. 29 ± 0. 16; right: 1. 25± 0. 13 ; control, left: 1. 41± 0. 20; right: 1. 36 ±0. 17). Conclusion Abnormal turnover of membrane phospholipid might exist in hippocampus in male patients with schizophrenia.
