Abstract:Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON) represents the development trend of optical networks. Multi-granularity optical switching is the importantly physically supporting techniques for ASON to realize traffic engineering and quality of service(QoS). The type of node structure realizing multi-granularity optical swithing in ASON is put forward and a multi-granularity optical switch using this structure is developed. The software for controlling the node in ASON is compiled. The experimental research is carried out with campus network as signalling network and the data network is of mesh architecture, which is a typical architecture in ASON. The main functions of ASON are verified.

Abstract:This paper presents automatic switched optical networks (ASONs) test-bed based on GMPLS made by Tsinghua University in details. The test-bed contains three plans: transport, control and management. The transport plane is formed with four optical crossconnects (OXCs) and one optical adding and dropping multiplexer (OADM); the control plane is constructed with signaling, routine, link management and UNI modules which are based on GMPLS protocols, and the simplified management plane is developed for the purpose of switched permanent connection. The test-bed possesses changeable topologies and is suitable for researches in optical network with different purposes. The architecture of the test-bed and modules for control plane are presented in the paper. Some experiments within the test-bed are also described.

Abstract:As the technology of intelligent substation is developed gradually, the significance of he Ethernet switch in the substation is obvious increasingly.Firstly, the learning and transmitting principle of Ethernet frame are introduced, then the network program of secondary system using the switch in the hierarchial structure is described. And then a detailed analysis of the VLAN, QoS, mirror and ring network is given, also the various technical application scheme are provided according to a variety of IED features and data flow characteristics. On the basis of the different business needs and different message types, the reasonable design of network topology and the flexible use of these switching technology , can support security, stability, reliable transmission of communication message in intelligent substation , therefore the whole substation becomes more strong.

Abstract:In this paper, the GMPLS (Generalized Multi Protocol Label Switching) based ASON (Automatically Switched Optical Network) test-bed is introduced. This test-bed composes of three different planes, namely the transport plane, the control plane and the management plane. There are four OXCs (Optical Cross Connection) and one OADM (Optical Adding/Dropping Mulitplexer) in the transport plane. The modules developed in the control plane include the link management module, the routing module and the signaling module, whose implementation are fully in compliance with international standards. In the management plane, configuration management and fault management are implemented. As an ASON test-bed, it supports several characteristic functions of next generation optical network, for instance, the run-time reconfigurable topology, automatic discovery of neighbors and services, constraint based routing and fast protection and restoration in the optical domain.

Abstract:Optical Virtual Private Network (OVPN) is an increasingly important application of Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON). To meet the demands of today's different types of network services, dynamic OVPN technique is studied and two new functions are brought forward, which are dynamic connection management, and fast protection/restoration. We realize dynamic OVPN technique in the first ASON testbed in China, based on GMPLS signaling mechanism. The dynamic OVPN technique makes the optical network able to provide customers with reliable and flexible services by more functional and intelligent methods.

Abstract:In this paper,we introduce several light path monitoring techniques in automatic switched optical networks(ASONs),including indirectly monitoring method,node-internal identification tag method and global unique identification method,such as pilot tone.The principles,the experimental results,the realizabilities,the advantages and disadvantages of these techniques are described and compared.The comparisons show that indirectly monitoring method is a practically adopted technique due to its simplicity;digital wrapper will be a preferred technique in industry in the near future for its advantage and realizability;other techniques are in laboratory research stage.

Abstract:Based on current quantum communication technology,the core technique in automatic switch optical network(ASON) is introduced into quantum communication network,the 3 layers quantum communication network(QCN) model is proposed,in which transmission plane and control plane are separated each other.At the same time,the quantum switch based on the proposed 3 layers quantum communication network model is presented in the paper.Finally the scheme of quantum switch,which is as a key technology of carrying out quantum switching is presented in the paper.This scheme of QCN may play an important role in the establishment of quantum communication network in the large scale in the future.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid development of Internet technology, the capacity of communication system is increasing rapidly and traditional switching technology based on optical-electrical-optical (O/E/O) conversion cannot satisfy requirements for information exchange. Construction of a high-speed, large-capacity, high-bandwidth all-optical switching network will be the future direction of communication systems. In this paper, the key technologies in all-optical label switching networks are investigated. First, five kinds of optical label technologies are studied. The principles and implementation methods of them are analyzed and compared. Then, optical switching fabrics based on different kinds of optical switches are discussed. Next, a 160Gb/s Optical Time Division Multiplexing (OTDM) signal 1 × 8 packet switching experiment is introduced. Finally, the research work is summarized, and the design of core nodes in optical packet switching network is prospected.

Abstract:The key current challenges for the industrial application of all optical switching networks are energy consumption, transmission rate, spectrum efficiency, and switching throughput. The energy consumption problem is mainly researched in this paper. From the perspective of components and modules, node equipment, and network levels, different enabling technologies are proposed to overcome this problem, which are also evaluated through different experimental demonstrations. First, high-sampling-rate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) and WSS-based ROADM modules are demonstrated as components and modules for energy-efficient all optical switching networks. Then, an all optical transport network test-bed consisting of 10 Pbit/s level all optical switching nodes based on multi-level and multi-planar switching architecture is experimentally demonstrated for the first time, which can reduce power consumption by 43%. A control architecture for energy-efficient all optical switching networks is built with OpenFlow based software defined networking (SDN), and experimental results are given to verify the performance of this control architecture. Finally, we describe an All Optical Networks Innovation (AONI) project in China, which aims to explore transmission, switching, and networking technologies in all optical switching networks, and then two application scenarios are forecast based on the technical breakthroughs of this project.

Abstract:A detailed examination of evolving traffic characteristics, operator requirements, and network technology trends suggests a move away from nonblocking interconnects in data center networks (DCNs). As a result, recent efforts have advocated oversubscribed networks with the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on-demand. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of OSA, a novel Optical Switching Architecture for DCNs. Leveraging runtime reconfigurable optical devices, OSA dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. Extensive analytical simulations using both real and synthetic traffic patterns demonstrate that OSA can deliver high bisection bandwidth (60%-100% of the nonblocking architecture). Implementation and evaluation of a small-scale functional prototype further demonstrate the feasibility of OSA.

Abstract:In this paper, the architecture of the optical networks based on Time-Space Label (TSL) Switching is described in detail including Time-Space Label and Time-Space Routing algorithm. The switching mode is more flexible and scalable. The labels can be changed to fit for different kinds of optical switching technologies, such as Optical Circuit Switching (OCS), Optical Burst Switching (OBS) and Optical Packet Switching (OPS). The TSL switching has a very wide range of applications in the optical networks. In the existing signaling protocols of OBS, the routing and the signaling are separated. However, TSL switching combines both of them together. Moreover, the resource reservations are realized in a two-dimension Time-Space plane, and the blocking probability is reduced greatly. The mature electronic processing technologies and the high-speed optical transport are cooperated effectively in the TSL switching. On the other hand, Multi-Granularity (MG) Switching can groom the vast bypass traffic in the optical networks effectively, with which the core nodes are simplified, and the throughput is increased significantly. When MG switching is combined with TSL switching, the performance of the entire network will be improved greatly. A test system built for validating the MG switching based on TSL is described, and the results show the switching performance of different granularities correctly.

Abstract:With the wide application of the DWDM technology and the rapid development of the optical transport network, optical switches will become the key components for the construction of future optical networks. At present, various optical switches in terms of micro-opto-electro-mechanical system, Mach-Zender interferometer, thermo-optic effect, liquid crystals, bubbles, holograms and acousto-optic effect are under comprehensive research and development. In this paper, the basic principles of those devices are illustrated and the state-of-the-art advances of optical switches are introduced.

Abstract:This paper presents a large scale automatically switched optical network (ASON) test-bed made by Tsinghua University. The testbed is composed of hardware platform, control plane and management plane. The hardware platform is constructed with switches, computers and optical nodes as well. The software modules of the control plane for the testbed mainly include hierarchical routing, signaling with the separation of the call control and the connection control, and the link management supporting hierarchical control. The management plane is a distributed system with locally centralized management functions. The testbed can provide main large scale ASON functions and record the kinds and the amount of signaling, total and separate block probabilities for the sake of research.
