Abstract:An overview of photobioreactors now in use for production of microalgae world wide is presented, andthe application of photobioreactors to the cultivation of microalgae is discussed in detail. It is pointed out thathigh cell density and industrial production of microalgae can be achieved using many kinds of closed photobiore-actors including fermentor, tubular and flat plate photobioreactors, and the cultivation of Spirulina, Chlorella,Dunaliella tertiolecta and Porphyridium cruentrim by photobioreactors can achieve higher and steadier produc-tivity than the cultivation of microalgae by an open air system. More and more researches indicate that tubularand flat plate photobioreactors are the development trend for photobioreactors with bubbles and air lift stirrers,and high bright light-emitting diodes are the most economic light source with great potential for future develop-ment of photobioreactors. Photobioreactors can also be used for the production of high-value metabolite ( EPA orDHA) using some microalgae species for energy development and environment protection.

Abstract:Various bioreactor designs have been investigated to grow microalgae and produce biomass. Efficient operation of a bioreactor requires close control of growth conditions which is possible through frequent data collection from the system. Manual sample collection and analyses are both laborious and relatively expensive. Development of an integrated real-time bioreactor monitoring and control system is important for making decisions with respect to nutrient delivery, biomass harvesting time, light and CO2 supply cycles and temperature to prevent economic losses during algae growth. In this study, an automated system was developed to monitor and control an algae bioreactor. The system which is controlled by a computer consists of a spectrophotometer, one circulating pump that is used to extract algae samples from the algae bioreactor to a pipeline, and two pumps that are used to replace a portion of the culture medium at its maximum cell concentration with fresh medium containing nutrients. A computer program was developed to collect spectral data from the bioreactor in real time. Mathematical model describing relationships between spectral data and biomass concentration have also been developed for Picochlorum oklahomensis (PO) microalgae strain. Such an automated culture growth system allows us to run a bioreactor in a semi-continuous mode of operation and minimize microbial contamination during sampling, harvesting and nutrient addition to the system.

Abstract:In this work, a novel tubular photobioreactor with the outer surface periodically shaded by the light-shielding material at pre-set interval was developed. Such design forms periodic light and dark regions along tubular photobioreactor, which creates controllable light/dark cycle and favours the microalgae growth. Experimental results showed that the developed photobioreactor was beneficial for the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa and a higher light-to-biomass conversion efficiency was achieved. The effects of the frequency of the light/dark cycle and light intensity on the microalgae cultivation were also investigated. It was revealed that this new design could greatly enhance the photosynthetic efficiency. As compared to conventional photobioreactors, the average biomass productivity could be increased by 21.6 +/- 2.1% when the frequency of created artificial light/dark cycle was set at 100 Hz. The photobioreactor developed in this work enables an efficient light-to-biomass conversion and provides a viable and promising vision for large-scale outdoor applications. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A 200 L-scale tubular photobioreactor for microalgae culture is designed and built in our laboratory, including stainless steel base and bracket, photobioreaction tube, dissolved oxygen releasing tank, the circulating system, intake system, lighting system and cleaning device. Photobioreaction tube made of plexiglass material with 10cm of diameter has 200 L of effective volume. Fluorescent lamps provide light for photosynthesis of microalgae. The circulating rate is controlled by a low-speed centrifugal pump with an inverter. Carbon source is provided by intaking air or carbon dioxide gas. The magnetic cleaner is used to clean the inner walls of the reaction tubes. Higher biomass is obtained in the reactor than that in traditional small-scale microalgae culture.

Abstract:Photo-bioreactors(PBR) are important device for realizing high-density culture of microalgae.One of the key technologies for designing PBR is to choose the appropriate illumination mode.According to related research achievements domestic and international in recent years,the present research conditions of illumination technique in PBR were reviewed.An introduction is emphatically given of the effect of two factors as incident light properties(including light source,light intensity,light quality and light dark cycle etc.) and light energy distribution,on the microalgae growth.The future research directions are also put forward.It could provide reference for the efficient PBR system design and optimize.

Abstract:Abstract Cultivating and harvesting of products from microalgae has led to increasing commercial interest in their use for producing valuable substances for food, feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biodiesel, as well as for mitigation of pollution and rising CO 2 in the environment. This review outlines different bioreactors and their current status, and points out their advantages and disadvantages. Compared with open‐air systems, there are distinct advantages to using closed systems, but technical challenges still remain. In view of potential applications, development of a more controllable, economical, and efficient closed culturing system is needed. Further developments still depend on continued research in the design of photobioreactors and break‐throughs in microalgal culturing technologies.

Numerical and Experimental Study on the Performance of Flat-Plate Photobioreactors with Different Inner Structures for Microalgae Cultivation

Abstract:Three types of 15-L flat-plate photobioreactors (PBRs), namely, bubble reactor, split flat-plate airlift reactor, and central flat-plate airlift reactor, were investigated for their performance based on numerical and experimental methods. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to calculate mixing and light regime characteristics parameters of PBRs. The performance of flat-plate PBRs was preliminarily evaluated according to the light–dark cycle of algal cells and fluid mixing along the light attenuation direction. The analysis showed that the optimal PBR was the split airlift type, whereas the bubble PBR was the poorest. The photoautotrophic cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was conducted to confirm the actual performance of PBRs. The result of microalgae culture experiment showed the biomass productivity in split airlift reactor was 0.018 g L−1 h−1 which was 50 and 12.5 % higher than those in bubble and central airlift PBRs, respectively. The maximum biomass concentration and specific growth rate of algal cell in split flat-plate airlift reactor were greatest, and those in bubble reactor were lowest. Therefore, the experiment results are completely consistent with those obtained through the computational approach, suggesting the numerical model combining fluid hydrodynamics with irradiation transfer as well as statistical treatment developed in this study can be applied to optimize and evaluate the performance of PBRs efficiently.

Abstract:Novel flat-plate photobioreactors (PBRs) with special mixers (type-a, type-b, and type-c) were designed based on increased mixing degree along the light gradient. The hydrodynamic and light regime characteristic of the novel PBRs were investigated through computational fluid dynamics. Compared with the control reactor without mixer, the novel reactors can effectively increase liquid velocity along the light gradient, the frequency of light/dark (L/D) cycles, and the algal growth rates of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The maximum biomass concentrations in type-a, type-b, and type-c reactors were 42.9% (1.3 g L-1), 31.9% (1.2 g L-1), and 20.9% (1.1 g L-1) higher than that in the control reactor (0.91 g L-1), respectively, at an aeration rate of 1.0 vvm. Correlation analysis of algal growth rate with the characteristics of mixing and light regime shows the key factors affecting algal photoautotrophic growth are liquid velocity along the light gradient and L/D cycles rather than the macro-mixing degree. Abstract:Continuous cultivation process of microalgae biomass was developed using a new tubular oscillatory flow photobioreactor. By changing the CO2 gas velocity, the initial concentration of microalgae biomass and nutrient solution culture conditions, growth rate of Isochrysis galbana under different culture conditions was investigated. It was found that high CO2 gas velocity, the use of low initial concentration of algae and nutrients continuously fed method would result in a higher growth rate.
CO2 capture/biofixation and lipid extraction by membrane contactors for enhancing microalgal cultivation

Abstract:Recent soaring oil prices and diminishing world oil reserves, coupled with the increased emission of greenhouse gases and the predicted threat of climate change, have generated renewed interest in using algae as an alternative and renewable feedstock for energy production. Aimed at intensifying microalgal CO2 fixation and lipid production enhancement, membrane contactors have been applied to capture CO2 from air, enhance microalgal cultivation and extract lipid from algae. In order to capture CO2 from air, three kinds of membrane contactors with absorption agents, Carbonic Anhydrase (CA)-hydrogel and ionic liquid, were designed. The photo-bioreactor integrated with a hollow-fiber membrane module to supply CO2 has been designed for Chlorella vulgaris cultivation. Using a membrane contactor, the residence time of CO2 in the photo-bioreactor can be prolonged to enhance CO2 biofixation. The biofixation rate has reached 0.38 g/(L·h), which is more than 2-3 times those in conventional reactors. In order to increase lipid productivity, the effects of cultivation conditions, including KNO3-level, CO2 concentration and irradiance, on the cell growth, chlorophyll content and lipid accumulation of Chlorella vulgaris are systematically investigated. The lipid productivity has reached 40 mg/(L·d) under select cultivated conditions, which is more than 2.5-fold of that reported. Finally, to simplify the algal lipid production process and thus to reduce costs, microalgal lipid extracted in situ and continuously produced in the bioreactor integrated with membrane-based extraction has been investigated in this study.

Abstract:Three macroalgal clones of Grateloupia filicina,Polysiphonia urceolata and Ulva pertusa,respectively,were obtained by the totipotency of marine algae.From them,three types of algal microspheres suitable for cultivation in a 10-L airlift photobioreactor were developed,which were flossy,netty and fascicular,respectively.The tufted microspheres of U.pertusa were cultivated in the photobioreactor to the biomass density of 5.81 g/L FW L,with the maximum growth rate of 0.36 g/(L d)FW and specific growth rate of 0.103 d 1.The technology of high-density culture of macroalgae in photobioreactor will have wide applications,including seeding,mass cultivation,integrate-aquaculture,and manufacture of bioactive products.

Abstract:Microalgae cultivation using wastewater might be a suitable approach to support sustainable large-scale biomass production. Its compelling characteristics included the recycling of nutrients and water resources, reducing carbon emissions and harvesting available biomass. In outdoor batch and continuous cultures, Chlorella pyrenoidosa completely adapted to anaerobic digested starch processing wastewater and was the dominant microorganism in the photobioreactor. However, seasonal changes of environmental conditions significantly influenced biomass growth and lipid production. The long-term outdoor operation demonstrated that the biomass concentration and productivity in continuous operations at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) can be successfully predicted using the kinetic growth parameters obtained from the batch culture. A moderate HRT (4days) in the summer provided the best microalgae and lipid production and achieved relatively high biomass concentrations of 1.29-1.62g/L, biomass productivities of 342.6±12.8mg/L/d and lipids productivities of 43.37±7.43mg/L/d.

Abstract:Microalgae, highly prized for their protein, lipid, carbohydrate, phycocyanin, and carotenoid-rich biomass, have garnered significant industrial attention in the context of third-generation (3G) biorefineries, seeking sustainable alternatives to non-renewable resources. Two primarily cultivation methods, open ponds and closed photobioreactors systems, have emerged. Open ponds, favored for their cost-effectiveness in large-scale industrial production, although lacking precise environmental control, contrast with closed photobioreactors, offering controlled conditions and enhanced biomass production at the laboratory scale. However, their high operational costs challenge large-scale deployment. This review comprehensively examines the strength, weakness, and typical designs of both outdoor and indoor microalgae cultivation systems, with an emphasis on their application in terms of biorefinery concept. Additionally, it incorporates techno-economic analyses, providing insights into the financial aspects of microalgae biomass production. These multifaceted insights, encompassing both technological and economic dimensions, are important as the global interest in harnessing microalgae's valuable resources continue to grow.
A Novel Light Source Provided by Photobacteria to Improve the Growth of Microalgal Biofilm

Abstract:Attached microalgae cultivation for biomass/bioenergy production has been proposed these decades to avoid the energy-intensive harvest process. However, the external light could only propagate <200 μm in biofilm, which inhibits the growth of microalgae in deep layer. In this paper, the possibility of using inner light emitted by mix-cultured photobacteria for attached microalgae growth was investigated. The luminance of photobacteria gradually increased along with their growth. However, it would fade after approximately 14 h in one-time feed cultivation, which could be recovered by refreshing medium. By scattering photobacteria in the middle of microalgae, light emitted from photobacteria could be utilized for the photosynthesis of microalgae. It was found that the involvement of photobacteria could promote the algal biofilm growth from 9.6 mg to 11.5 mg under the natural condition for a 7-day cultivation, which needed to be further strengthened.

Abstract:Abstract Phototrophic microorganisms that convert carbon dioxide are being explored for their capacity to solve different environmental issues and produce bioactive compounds for human therapeutics and as food additives. Full-scale phototrophic cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria can be done in open ponds or closed photobioreactor systems, which have a broad range of volumes. This review focuses on laboratory-scale photobioreactors and their different designs. Illuminated microtiter plates and microfluidic devices offer an option for automated high-throughput studies with microalgae. Illuminated shake flasks are used for simple uncontrolled batch studies. The application of illuminated bubble column reactors strongly emphasizes homogenous gas distribution, while illuminated flat plate bioreactors offer high and uniform light input. Illuminated stirred-tank bioreactors facilitate the application of very well-defined reaction conditions. Closed tubular photobioreactors as well as open photobioreactors like small-scale raceway ponds and thin-layer cascades are applied as scale-down models of the respective large-scale bioreactors. A few other less common designs such as illuminated plastic bags or aquarium tanks are also used mainly because of their relatively low cost, but up-scaling of these designs is challenging with additional light-driven issues. Finally, this review covers recommendations on the criteria for photobioreactor selection and operation while up-scaling of phototrophic bioprocesses with microalgae or cyanobacteria.

Abstract:Microalgae are commonly cultivated using photobioreactors (PBRs). To investigate Chlorella vulgaris productivity, a 2.5-L airlift photobioreactor (AL-PBR) with vertical and incline baffles was newly developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), particle image velocimetry (PIV) methods, and dark/light cultures. A significant increase in cell density and lipid accumulation rate (LAR) in the AL-PBR was observed. Hydrodynamic stresses including velocity fluctuation, pressure drop, looped bubble swarm, and vorticity magnitude were quantified in algae cultures, suggesting that microvortices induced light and CO2 distribution regulated the algae plastid metabolism in the exponential phase of growth. This study provides a fundamental practice to the scale-up of bioreactors.

For future applications, open pond systems for large-scale production seem to have a lower innovative potential than closed systems. For high-value products in particular, closed systems of photobioreactors seem to be the more promising field for technical developments despite very different approaches in design.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is the most important natural process for the neogenesis of biological material. More than 40 000 species of oligocellular algae constitute a unique biochemical fund in the plant world. As the energy supply to the phototrophic microorganisms is transported via photons and as the physics of light distribution is a technical challenge, the technique of biomass production of single cell algae as against heterotrophic organisms is in a stage of intensive development. In contrast to area intensive open pond technology, space saving closed cultivation systems could be gradually established in the market of industrial photobioreactors. The present review surveys outdoor cultivation systems and indoor photobioreactors with respect to their light utilization and productivity. To evaluation reactor performance independently of their design and location, growth yields were recalculated from published data. It became obvious that closed systems may out-perform raceway ponds by about 300%, which represents productivities over 100 g dry algal biomass per m2 per day. Thus, economic aspects for the cultivation of phototrophs, even in moderate climates, are better satisfied, but microalgal biotechnology is still of minor importance because of high biomass production costs. Considering indoor systems with internal illumination arrangements, the growth potential can be increased by a further 100%. Due to the high technical expenses, this technology will be confined to the production of high value products, e.g. pharmaceuticals. Consequently, very defined axenic cultivitation has to be guaranteed by all means available.
