Abstract:The seeds and seedlings of pepper were handled by the various concentrations of cinnamaldehyde. The effects of cinnamaldehyde on the seed germination,the growth,the chlorophyll content,root activity and the change of antioxidant enzymes in pepper were studied in this paper. The results showed that the change of germination energy was no significant difference in the 50 mg / L cinnamaldehyde concentration,whereas it markedly decreased with the rising of the cinnamaldehyde concentration. When the cinnamaldehyde concentration was less than 300 mg / L,the germination percentage was no significant difference compared with the control,whereas the germination index and the vigor index markedly decreased with the rising of the cinnamaldehyde concentration. The shoot height was no significant difference in the 50 mg / L cinnamaldehyde concentration,whereas it markedly decreased with the rising of the cinnamaldehyde concentration. The root length, fresh weight and dry weight had the same trend as the shoot height. When the cinnamaldehyde concentration was less than 150 mg / L,the chlorophyll content significantly increased compared with the control. When the cinnamaldehyde concentration was more than 150 mg / L,the chlorophyll content had some extent decrease. However,it had no significant difference compared with the control. Under the treatment of cinnamaldehyde soaked seeds the root activity showed the trend of increase-decrease with the increase of cinnamaldehyde concentration, whereas the antioxidant enzymes activities of SOD,POD and CAT gradually decreased. But SOD and POD activities were no significant difference compared with the control in the 50 mg / L treatment. All the results showed that the seeds of pepper could be deal with the lower concentration cinnamaldehyde to inhibit and control Phytophthora blight.
