Abstract:An integrated reverse engineering system has been developed. It makes the points-data processing system as a data adapter between the digitized device and the commercial CAD/CAE/CAM software. The digitalization manner, scanning path plan and sample points will be defined by final application based on the integrated system. And the measured points can directly generate NC code and STL file via the data adapter. Another alternative is 3D object reconstruction; the work also depends on the downstream process. The integrated approach can reduce the scanning and modeling time, create the unite model and adapt to various applications. The technology has been integrated with the current commercial CAD systems and is proved valid by practically application.
Semantics-based measurement information transmission method for reverse engineering

Abstract:The relationship between surface digitization and model reconstruction is relatively independent in reverse engi-neering. In addition to three-dimensional coordinates, some useful auxiliary information (implicit information) is lost (cannot be stored and transferred in common neutral files), which makes the follow-up model reconstruction difficult and time-consuming. To solve this problem, a novel semantics-based measurement information transmission method is proposed. Firstly, the semantic information mined throughout the surface digitization is analyzed. Then, a semantic information model is established, and an IGES-like data format is used to store sematic information. The packaging and parsing of semantic information, data reprocessing and CAD model reconstruction are described. An experimental case is studied, and the results show that the method can greatly improve the efficiency of CAD model reconstruction.
3D Measuring Points Registration Based on Datum-Points in Reverse Engineering

Abstract:For acquiring surface data of sample part in reverse engineering, multiple scanning of measuring process is usually required to adapt to the configuration or topology of the part. We propose a data set registration method based on three datum-points which are measured repeatedly in different coordinate systems to formulate the rotation and translation matrices for data mapping. Least-square method is utilized to counteract the measurement noise error.This approach was tested on a motorcycle surface clay model, the overall shape of reconstructed part surface is accurate and fitting along its boundary is fine, it meets the required design precision well.

Abstract:When acquiring the surface data of the sample part, it is not easy to get the full data on one scan due to the configuration or topology of the part. In addition, some special parts have special assembly request, for example the joint surface smooth and the boundary share. The process usually requires multiple scans for an assembly model. Some identical points have different coordinate data because of the moving of the part. As a result, before the model reconstruction the digitized data must be registered or aligned. According to the geometric graphics transform theory, this work develops a digitized point sets registration method, which is based on the coordinate transform. The method utilizes measured three datum-point data in different coordinate systems to calculate the rotation and translation matrix. If the measurement error cannot be ignored, the least-square method may be applied to find the closest points. Finally, this method is adopted to the clay model of the motorcycle surface in reverse engineering, the data registration meets the design precision.

Abstract:The product exchange data technology is an important base for a heterogeneous collaborative design. A new feature-based CAD data exchange technology is presented, which is based on mapping of modeling function set. This approach ensures efficient data exchange among heterogeneous CAD systems, and high-level design intent of designer is reserved. This paper put forwards a collaborative design system which based on the feature-based CAD data exchange. Some key technologies, modeling sharing, collaborative design agent are researched. Lastly, collaborative design-implementing is proposed.

Abstract:Reverse engineering is more and more widely applied in industry for computer aided product design. In this paper we review the development process of reverse engineering and summarize the various model reconstruction methods. We point out that current data acquisition techniques still lack practical solutions, the shortcoming of geometric model reconstruction is to consider isolated surface patch fitting and neglect the constraints relationship and geometric feature of the object. Because the majority of parts are designed with intended feature and geometric relationship, an important object in models reconstruction is to resume those feature and geometric relationship. Subsequently the key technology of shape data measurement and surface fitting are proposed. Specific problems further solved include multiple views data registration, the probe(CMM) 3D compensation, symmetry datum plane reconstruction, and feature-based model reconstruction strategies. Finally, in order to develop reverse engineering technology into an applied tool, the sophisticated commercial software which integrate reverse engineering should be developed.
Reverse Innovative Design - an Integrated Product Design Methodology

Abstract:Today's product designer is being asked to develop high quality, innovative products at an ever increasing pace. To meet this need, an intensive search is underway for advanced design methodologies that facilitate the acquisition of design knowledge and creative ideas for later reuse. Additionally, designers are embracing a wide range of 3D digital design applications, such as 3D digitization, 3D CAD and CAID, reverse engineering (RE), CAE analysis and rapid prototyping (RP). In this paper, we propose a reverse engineering innovative design methodology called Reverse Innovative Design (RID). The RID methodology facilitates design and knowledge reuse by leveraging 3D digital design applications. The core of our RID methodology is the definition and construction of feature-based parametric solid models from scanned data. The solid model is constructed with feature data to allow for design modification and iteration. Such a construction is well suited for downstream analysis and rapid prototyping. In this paper, we will review the commercial availability and technological developments of some relevant 3D digital design applications. We will then introduce three RE modelling strategies: an autosurfacing strategy for organic shapes; a solid modelling strategy with feature recognition and surface fitting for analytical models; and a curve-based modelling strategy for accurate reverse modelling. Freeform shapes are appearing with more frequency in product development. Since their ''natural'' parameters are hard to define and extract, we propose construction of a feature skeleton based upon industrial or regional standards or by user interaction. Global and local product definition parameters are then linked to the feature skeleton. Design modification is performed by solving a constrained optimization problem. A RID platform has been developed and the main RE strategies and core algorithms have been integrated into SolidWorks as an add-in product called ScanTo3D. We will use this system to demonstrate our RID methodology on a collection of innovative consumer product design examples.

The paper presented the new method of abnormity part measuring coordinate, the best measuring layout and higher precision data processing using Cimatron software for the processing of complex surface. Abstract:Conventional geometric models couldn't meet the needs of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) of products with complex shape. In order to solve this problem, a point-based geometric model applied to CAD/CAM was put forward. The definition of point-based geometric model and its application process of CAD/CAM were presented. The geometric properties, CAD method, CAM method, and CAD/ CAM system development method of this model were studied. The CAD/CAM application of shoe last showed that point-based geometric model was superior to conventional geometric models, and could realize CAD/CAM in some special products.

Abstract:Aim at the problem of information flow between the reverse engineering software (RE-SOFT) on complicated surface modeling and others commercial CAD/CAM system, a composite triangular Beizer surface reconstructing the quadrilateral NURBS technique based on IGES standard is presented. By extracting feature of the composite triangular surface, the triangular surface is subdivided into patches. And then the G 1 continuous smooth NURBS surface model is reconstructed and is submited to other CAD/CAM system to ulteriorly process in IGES data format, and then its goals for taking full advantage of triangular surface as well as realizing the purpose for integrating the special CAD software (RE-SOFT) and others commercial CAD/CAM system is achieved.

Abstract:One of the key technologies for distributed integrated manufacturing systems is to realize automatic transmission and conversion of product data among distributed and heterogeneous systems like CAD, CAPP, CAM, CAE, etc. This paper presents an Internet-based framework of product data exchange and the architecture of the framework, which uses Internet/CORBA as the communication platform and XML as product data exchange language. Abstract:STandard for the Exchange of Product model data-compliant Numerical Control data interface(STEP-NC) data model and machining program structure were firstly analyzed.Machining program information extraction system was designed.Principles and realization method of model entity construction,lexical analysis,entity-instance matching and information assorting with feature reconstruction were discussed in detail.Based on above-proposed model,the STEP-NC information extract experiment prototype system was developed,and it was proved to be effective in reading the examples of ISO STEP-NC FDIS.

Abstract:The information integration, especially in CAD/CAPP/CAM, is a basis for realizing the integrated and concurrent product development in Concurrent Engineering (CE) environment. The integration technology based on STEP application protocol gives an effective way for the CAx/DFx information integration. This paper discusses the characteristics of concurrent product development, analyzes the methodology and technology of STEP, proposes an information integration approach based on STEP AP214, and presents the strategy of product data integration and an integration system implementation architecture. The integration technology based on STEP application protocol and the ST Developer tools is realized in a prototype system to support product data integration between CAD and its follow up systems through STEP physical file and STEP information exchange interface.

Abstract:Reverse engineering (RE) is widely used on the aspects about designing of advanced products, software or images. The 3D Geometric modeling method is composed of measurement equipment and RE software. The three-dimensional digital measurement equipment is used to collect the model’s point cloud data and reconstruct CAD model. Geomagic Studio is widely used to process data and repair models, while Geomagic Qualify is widely used in testing of reconstruction model. The point cloud data of a turbine blade is collected and processed, some technologies and steps including pre-processing of point cloud data, polygon processing, surface fitting, triangular mesh, model smoothing and polygon mesh optimization are conducted. Finally, it is being demonstrated that 3D Geometric modeling method in Reverse Engineering is successful.

A Review and Comparison of IGES and STEP

Abstract:ABSTRACT Product data exchange among different CAD/CAM/CAE systems or even animation and documentation software are of great importance to computer-integrated manufacturing CIM. This sharing of product data is also a key to successful deployment of concurrent engineering. Furthermore, this practice mainly contributes in reducing lead-time of product development. Due to the large variety of CAD systems in the market, design data exchange among different CAD systems is indispensable. Currently, data exchange standards such as IGES and STEP provide a unique approach for interfacing among different CAD platforms. This paper reviews the development in IGES and STEP by categorizing their topics of researches, key players and years of publications ranging from 2000 to 2009 access from well known databases namely SCOPUS, Sciencedirect and Emerald. Comparisons between them in respects of structures, advantages and disadvantages are discussed together. Among all neutral files available in the market, IGES and STEP are chosen because of two reasons. First, they are standards developed by standard bodies, ANSI and ISO. Second, both are extensively applied and most popular in product data exchange among heterogeneous CAD systems.

Abstract:RE-SOFT, a feature-based reverse engineering software, has been widely accepted by CAD technicians because of its distinct tools for point-cloud operation, geometric feature extraction, operation and analysis, feature-based curve and surface reconstruction, edit and etc. System architecture and main functions of the software are introduced briefly. Some key techniques and algorithms, with regard to data pre-processing, feature extraction, feature reconstruction and edition, are presented and described in detail. Taking an engine blade as an example, the application illustrates that, with RE-SOFT, feature-based parametric model can be obtained efficiently and accurately. Finally, the next tasks for upgrading RE-SOFT are concluded.
