Abstract:A new oscillation criterion is established for the first-order delay differential equation x' (t) + p(t)x(t(t)) = 0, t >= t(0), where p(t), tau(t) is an element of C([t(0), + infinity), [0, +infinity)), tau(t) is non-decreasing, tau(t) < t and lim(t ->infinity) tau(t) = infinity. By discretizing not only x(t) but also integral(tau)t(t) p(s)ds, we show that all solutions of the equation are oscillatory if lim sup(t ->infinity) integral(tau(t)) p(s)ds > 1 + ln lambda(1)/lambda(1) -alpha(2)/alpha(2/)2+ -alpha(3) -lambda(1/)3! 1 -a -a2 2 + alpha 3.1 3! + alpha 4.2 1 4!/1 -a -a2 2 + a3.1 3! + a4.2 1 4! + a5.3 1 5! 1 -a-..., (*) where a= lim inf(t ->infinity) integral t t(t) p(s)ds. (0, 1 e] and lambda(1) is the smaller root of the equation is an element of= ea.. The right-hand side of (*) is proved to be strictly smaller than previous ones with an illustrative example.
