From Multi-culture to the Integrated One --A Concurrent Discussion of the Relationship Between Confucianist Culture and Singapore's Economic Modernization

Abstract:Singapore has become a highly modernized nation since its independence in 1965. Chinese scholars attribute the rapid growth of Singapore's economy to the enormous impetus of Confu-cianist culture. Rather, Singapore government has taken on different cultural orientations, at different time, from multi-culture to integrated one. And Confucianist culture is but one alternative that greatly affects Singapores modernization. The success of the modernization in Singapore is primarily a direct consequence of the input of capitalism by the West. Cultural elements of Confucianism, though, help to harmonize and accommodate. That is why the transplanted capitalism turns to be a more dynamic 0-riental capitalism than its Occidental counterpart.
