Football in the New China: Political Statement, Entrepreneurial Enticement and Patriotic Passion

Abstract:It is not well-known world-wide but football has now become the most popular sport in China, despite the prominence in the world's media of Chinese athletes, swimmers and gymnasts. As yet, however, the performance of China's men's football team has failed to impress. As recently as 1998 the national team ranked only 51st in the world. There are various articles dealing with the reasons for such an unsatisfactory state of affairs,1 but there is a lack of literature on Chinese football in general. Furthermore, the few articles available, both in Chinese and English, are mainly technique-oriented and systematic, and convincing analyses of the social, cultural, political and historical aspects of the sport are still in short supply. Consequently, to this day, various questions about Chinese football remain unanswered. How did modern football evolve in China? What dramatic changes have taken place over the last decades? What factors have determined its development and what is its future? This article, based on both Chinese archival records and published documents, deals, albeit briefly, with the evolution of football in the Peoples' Republic of China (PRC), but more especially with recent developments in an effort to discern the Chinese effort to stand proudly on the world football stage. As such, this article is by no means comprehensive and does not pretend to be authoritative but it is a beginning - and a rare exploration of Chinese sources.
