Abstract:In this paper, an algorithm which process the single image of CO2 laser imaging radar is presented. The simple quick algorithm consists of median threshold filter and homomorphic mean filter. The speckle index by the algorithm is 0.1489. Meanwhile, a few of the filter results are compared, for example median filter, mean filter, median threshold filter and homomorphic mean filter etc.

Abstract:In order to quickly obtain the three-dimensional structural information of targets, a staring imaging laser radar system is developed. The system consists of three parts. The first part is that of light emission. The pulsed laser diode stack with center wavelength of 808 nm was used. The second part is the receiver which is made up of objective lens, image intensifier and CCD camera. The third part is that of image capture and processing. Two images with constant gain modulation and linear gain modulation were obtained in two measurements, and the distance information was demodulated. The error based on noise model was analyzed and estimated for given parameters. Some experiments were made and the results were consistent with theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Lidar and visual data are affected heavily in adverse weather conditions due to sensing mechanisms, which bring potential safety hazards for vehicle navigation. Radar sensing is desirable to build a more robust navigation system. In this paper, a cross‐modality radar localisation on prior lidar maps is presented. Specifically, the proposed workflow consists of two parts: first, bird's‐eye‐view radar images are transferred to fake lidar images by training a generative adversarial network offline. Then with online radar scans, a Monte Carlo localisation framework is built to track the robot pose on lidar maps. The whole online localisation system only needs a rotating radar sensor and a pre‐built global lidar map. In the experimental section, the authors conduct an ablation study on image settings and test the proposed system on Oxford Radar Robot Car Dataset. The promising results show that the proposed localisation system could track the robot pose successfully, thus demonstrating the feasibility of radar style transfer for metric robot localisation on lidar maps.

Abstract:Laser radar can simultaneously produce the intensity and range images, and the space resolution is high, so the recognition performance is well, and it can choose the aim point of target. Laser radar is applied to many fields, such as guidance, navigation, and becomes the research hot point in recent years. In the vertical detection of laser radar, the algorithm is required not only solving in-plane rotation-invariant problem, also the distortion-invariant problem, and it must satisfied the real-time. Correlation algorithm is a parallel processing procedure, detecting many targets at one time, and its design can be implemented on the high speed digital signal processor. In the paper, a new filter named CHF-MACH filter is presented, which combine multiple circular harmonic expansions into one filter through MACH criteria. Because of the filter having the characters of the two filters, it can solve the problems of in-plane rotation-invariance and distortion-invariance simultaneously, and meet the real-time requirement. The simulated range image of laser radar is regarded as research target, and computing the PSR (peak to sidelobe ratio) values of correlation output of the different objects, and plotting the PSR curves of the different angles. Simulating the scene of laser radar which includes multiple objects, CHF-MACH filter performance is validated through testing with the different angles for the objects, and the non-training images can obtain the well correlation output.
Design and performance analysis of the fractional domain adaptive filtering algorithm for coherent imaging laser radar

Abstract:The bandpass filtering output signal of a coherent imaging laser radar system is a mixed signal including target return signal, noise and co-frequency interference caused by imperfect shielding. Their characteristics in the time domain and the frequency domain are very similar and it is difficult to separate them. In order to solve this problem we introduced the fractional domain adaptive filtering algorithm. The analytic expression of fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) of laser radar's return signal in theory was deduced and proved that the return signal has the characteristic of energy aggregation in fractional domain, but the co-frequency interference and noise do not have this characteristic. On this basis we constructed fractional domain adaptive filter and did filtering experiment on the return signal of coherent imaging laser radar developed by our team. By comparing the spectrum information before filtering and that after filtering it was obvious that the co-frequency interference had been mostly filtered and the complete signal was reserved without distortion. Signal noise ratio (SNR) was enhanced from 1.06 dB to 4.67 dB simultaneously; moreover, there was not any other involved noise added to the return signal of laser radar. In this work the fractional domain adaptive filtering algorithm was proved to provide a novel method for coherent imaging laser radar signal processing.
Study on hybird antenna system of CO2 laser imaging radar

Abstract:For meeting the requirement of miniaturization, low cost, and high image performance, a hybrid optical system composed of refractive optical elements and diffractive optical element is designed as the mode of the CO2 laser image radar antenna system. An experiment antenna system is accomplished to verify the design scheme. The experiment result show that the performance of the antenna system conforms to the design requirement.

Abstract:There has been much interest in the field of laser radar (ladar) owing to its high-resolution three-dimensional imagery. However, the coherent ladar images are affected badly by speckle, which is a multiplicative noise and has the statistical features of the negative exponential density. In the paper, the morphological filter based on the parametric edge detection is introduced in detail. Then, this detector and the ratio edge detector are compared with the conventional LOG (Laplacian of Gaussian) operator and Canny operator. At last, the edge detection results for coherent laser radar image are obtained. The experimental results show that the morphological filter based on parametric edge detection and the ratio edge detector are better than other algorithms for coherent ladar image, and the morphological filter based on the parametric edge detection is the best algorithm in this paper.

Abstract:Intensified change coupled device (ICCD) is one of the key devices in the staring three-dimensional (3D) active imaging laser radar. The intensity and noises were measured with different input light intensities and different intensified gain voltages. According to the photoelectric detection process, the measured intensity and noises are analyzed with Poisson random process theory and the least square fitting method. It is found out that the noises consist of the equivalent photoelectron shot noise from the image intensifier and the photoelectron shot noise from the charge coupled device (CCD). Although the optical signal is magnified by the image intensifier, the latter part of noise can not be neglected in most cases. A noise model of 3D imaging with a doubly stochastic Poisson process is established, from which the optimal range-modulated gain function with a minimum distance error is deduced.

Abstract:This paper reported a CO2 laser scanning imaging demo system adopting the technology of scanning transmit, the same antenna for receiving and transmitting, heterodyne detection etc. The maximum operation distance of the system was calculated by using the radar distance equation. The imaging experiment with the targets 5 meters away indoors and the building 578 meters away outdoors, with the viewpoint of ±2° × ±1° is carried out. The outline picture of 10 frames per second, and 32 rows per frame are obtained.

Abstract:Imaging laser radar can give intensity and range images, which provide integrated 3-dimensional (3D) information about objects. However, dropouts and range anomalies exacerbate range images, which makes their background cluttered and target blurred. For background suppression, a new algorithm that combines intensity image and its mean is presented. By using this algorithm to process actual laser radar range images, most background noises are suppressed. According to range anomalies characteristics, multi-template selection order mean filtering algorithm is presented and used for actual ladar range images where the distance between two targets is 77 m. This algorithm obtains the clear range image in which the interval of two objects is 75 m. The result shows that the processing algorithm is correct and effective.

Abstract:Laser radar could obtain the intensity image and range image synchronously, and the target is easily distinguished because of different range values, so the "Ladar" has abroad applications. However, in the range image proceeding, the target is always disturbed to illegible by speckle and random noise, how to retrain the noise as well as keep the image information becomes the crucial problem. This paper is based on the three filter methods: histogram, median, multiple level median, the methods are all based on the theory that the probability of range anomaly is far less than that of no anomaly, using the theory of stat sequence filter,could restrain the speckle and random noise very efficiency. The three methods have the different effect on the noise restraining and keeping edge from each other. To choose the methods, the contrast of each other method is made and the contrast and the characteristic have been got, the simulated result is obtained. This paper draws the conclusion that the histogram method has the best synthetically effect of the three methods, especially in the keeping edge. In the last, the filter methods are combined together to filter the raw image in different order and is found that the different order will make the effect different on the image; the reason is that the different order makes the initialization diverse for the filter methods. The result was showed in the end of the paper, while discussing the reason of the effect of the order.
Analysis of 1st order statistic specialty of CO 2 laser pulse heterodyne detection

Abstract:By analyzing the 1st order statistic specialty of the co-coherence function of Gauss local field and Airy signal field, it gives the matching condition between the amplitudes, phases, and wave vectors of the signal beam and the local beam in CO 2 laser pulse heterodyne detection. In theory, the maximum of the heterodyne quantum efficiency is 0.82. In the condition of off-focus, e.g. with spherical aberration, the phase difference between signal beam and local beam is mainly decided by the curvature of the Gauss local field which would lead to the reduction of the heterodyne quantum efficiency.

Abstract:A speckle-imaging model for impulse coherent laser radar(ICLR) is derived, which proves the presence of multiplieative noise in images of ICLR. According to its statistical property, a parallel weighted-average multidirectional morphological filtering algorithm is presented. Simulation result shows the algorithm can not only effectively suppress speckle noise in images but also preserve the geometrical features of images. Through comparison, it is proved that the algorithm is superior to F. Safa algorithm.

Abstract:Laser heterodyne radiometer has the advantages of low cost, small size, and high spectral resolution. It can expand the existing ground carbon measurement network, verify satellite observation results, and provide data coverage outside the satellite observation area. Using the existing laser heterodyne radiometer, is presented a prototype of near-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer based on the erbium-doped fiber amplifier that can realize local oscillator power locking. In the laser heterodyne radiometer a distributed feedback semiconductor laser with a center wavelength of 1.603 μm is used as a local oscillator light source. The erbium-doped fiber amplifier is used to enhance the local oscillator power, and the automatic power control circuit is adopted to lock the output optical power of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The baseline slope caused by the change of the local oscillator power is eliminated, and the whole layer atmospheric transmittance spectrum without baseline fitting is measured. The instrument performance of a highly integrated laser heterodyne radiometer based on an erbium-doped fiber amplifier is evaluated in detail, and the atmospheric CO2 transmittance spectrum is measured in the Science Island (31.9°N, 117.2°E) of Hefei. Six groups of atmospheric CO2 transmittance spectra are obtained during the measurement period of one day, which are compared with the simulation results from an atmospheric radiation model, showing that they are consistent with each other. The experimental results show that the application of erbium-doped fiber amplifier can improve the performance of laser heterodyne radiometer, optimize its structure, and provide equipment supplement for realizing unattended long-term atmospheric CO2 concentration observation and building a comprehensive carbon observation network.
Target recognition of laser radar using correlation filter with in-plane rotation invariance

Abstract:Laser radar can simultaneously produce the range image and the intensity image, and it can directly collect rich information of target. Compared with the other sensors, such as infrared or radar, laser radar can enhance the recognition rate and the precision of target aimed point. When laser radar vertically detects the objects on the plane ground, the correlation filters with in-plane rotation invariance are usually used to solving the problem of the target recognition. Traditional correlation filters are still improved on the aspect of recognition rate. In the paper, through deducing the relationship between support vector machine (SVM) and correlation principle in the signal processing, a new correlation filter, named linear SVM correlation filter (LSCF) that has the properties of SVM, is proposed. The real images of laser radar are used as the training and testing samples. The experiments state that the filter has good recognition attributes, such as stable correlation output and high recognition rate. LSCF is suitable to be the recognition algorithm of the imaging laser radar.
HoMeNL: A Homogeneity Measure-Based NonLocal Filtering Framework for Detail-Enhanced (Pol)(In)SAR Image Denoising

Abstract:As an inherent problem in coherent imaging systems, the existence of speckle noise results in SAR images with strong signal-dependent variance and seriously hinders the related properties estimation and the image interpretation. Among many filtering methods, nonlocal means (NLM) have been proven to be effective in reducing noise while preserving details. However, traditional NLM filters still face two core problems: 1) it is difficult for homogeneous pixels selection to construct a patch adaptive to local structure for preventing the omission phenomenon; 2) most central pixel value estimators are still at the stage of suppressing the blurring effect rather than eliminating the wrongly selected heterogeneous pixels. To overcome these two problems in the (Pol)(In)SAR image denoising, this paper proposes a homogeneity measure-based nonlocal (HoMeNL) filtering framework based on the following three innovations: 1) to sufficiently select homogeneous pixels in the patch-wise matching processing, the shape-adaptive (SA) patch can be selected from multiple preset patches with the one-to-many matching strategy; 2) as a general extension of the Lee estimator in (Pol)(In)SAR image denoising, the homogeneity measure (HoMe)-based estimator can achieve an optimal bias-variance tradeoff for the central pixel value; 3) the highlight of the proposed method is that the iterative re-weighted (IRW) estimation combines the residuals statistics and the homogeneity measure to adaptively locate and remove the wrongly selected heterogeneous pixels. Simulated and real experimental results show that the proposed filtering framework owns a superior performance than most state-of-art filters in three aspects of noise reduction, detail enhancement, and coherence magnitude estimation.
Sub Short Noise 3d Laser Radar Based on Second-Order Coherence

Abstract:The area array three-dimensional (3D) active imaging laser radar is a kind of remote sensing system which benefits high detection speed. This type of laser radars employ area optical modulation devices such as micro-channels plate (MCP) image intensifiers to modulate the photons flying time into intensity which can be detected by a charge coupled device (CCD). The distance measurement precision of this kind of laser radars is determined by the short noise of the photons numbers. This property limits the performance of this kind of laser radar. In this paper, a method based on second-order coherence is presented to compensate the short noise. The analysis result shows the photon bunching effect improves the SNR of the distance measurement with the same photon numbers. The second-order coherence based method is proposed to prove the 3D active imaging laser radar SNR. An experiment system is introduced which has results verified the theory.
