Abstract:The composite Ni/Al2O3-SiC catalyst was designed and synthesized for hydrogen production from propane partial oxidation. Through the composite of high thermal conductivity SiC and porous solid acid Al2O3, it improved the shortcoming of sintering and inactivation of high-temperature reaction for Ni-based catalysts. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 physical adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis etc. From the results, the SiC doped catalyst exhibited superior catalytic properties for hydrogen production by propane partial oxidation. By doping SiC with high thermal conductivity to Al2O3 support, the catalyst was improved for sintering and carbon deposition resistance and reducing the aggregation of Ni active sites reflected by improving the stability of hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing highly active and thermally stable transition-metal-oxide catalysts for light alkane catalytic oxidation is of great importance but very challenging. In the work, the catalytic performance for propane deep oxidation was significantly enhanced on the Mn1NixOy solid solution catalyst by weakening the Mn-O bond strength of manganese oxide. The characterization results combined with DFT calculations demonstrated that the introduction of Ni could create additional defect sites, resulting in a significant improvement of the adsorption and the activation of both propane and oxygen molecules. The optimal Mn1Ni0.15Oy catalyst exhibits abundant oxygen vacancies with low Mn-O bond strength, high redox ability and oxygen mobility, which account for its superior activity. Specifically, the specific reaction rate on Mn1Ni0.15Oy is three times higher than that on pure Mn2O3. Moreover, a Mn1Ni0.15Oy/cordierite monolithic catalyst was made by wash-coating method, and exhibited remarkable catalytic performance and stability on catalytic oxidation of propane during the 45 days (1080 h) on stream, even after tens of high temperature thermal shocks (up to 650 degrees C), which declared to be satisfied for practical industrial applications. This work will shed light on designing high-efficiency and long-life environmental catalyst for VOCs elimination.
Nickel doping MnO(2 )with abundant surface pits as highly efficient catalysts for propane deep oxidation

Abstract:Series of nickel doping MnO2 with irregular surface pits were synthesized and employed for propane deep oxidation. The partial substitution of Ni for Mn resulted in the formation of structural defects, which could be observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The MnNi0.09 sample exhibited the best catalytic activity for propane oxidation with the conversion of 90% at 220 degrees C. The presence of pits on the MnNi0.09 sample could facilitate the dissociation of propane and mobility of oxygen along the conduction channels of surface pits, thus promoting the catalytic efficiency. Moreover, the in situ studies found that different intermediates were formed on the MnO2 and MnNi0.09 catalysts during the propane oxidation process. The propane was oxidized to propanoyl species on the surface of MnO2 catalyst, while it was oxidized to hydrogen carbonates and carbonates on the surface of MnNi(0.09 )sample, which were thermally less stable and converted into CO2 at lower temperature. The finding provides a new perspective on understanding the effect of cation doping.
Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Ni-Mo-Mg-O Catalysts

Abstract:In this work, a series of Ni-Mo-Mg-O catalysts with mesoporous structure prepared by sol-gel method were investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP). The techniques of temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), N2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were employed for catalyst characterization. It is found that the activity of the catalysts for ODHP increases first and then decreases with the increase of Mo content. The catalyst with a Mo/Ni atomic ratio of 1/1 exhibits the best catalytic activity, which gives the propene selectivity of 81.4% at a propane conversion of 11.3% under 600°C and maintains the good catalytic performance for 22 h on stream. This is related not only to its high reducibility and dispersion as revealed by TPR and XRD, but also to the formation of more selective oxygen species on the MoOx-NiO interface as identified by XPS.

Abstract:A series of NiCeOx mixed metal oxide catalysts with various Ce/(Ce + Ni) ratios were prepared using hydrothermal methods The NiCeOx catalyst with a 4% Ce/(Ni + Ce) molar ratio (NiCeOx-4) demonstrated excellent catalytic performance for propane oxidation. Furthermore, the preparation method strongly affected the morphology and surface structure of the NiCeOx-4 catalyst as well as its catalytic activity for propane oxidation. The NiCeOx-4 catalyst that was prepared with the hydrothermal method exhibited a better catalytic performance compared with catalysts that were prepared by the co-precipitation method, sol-gel method and physical mixing of pure NiO and CeO2 powders. The results demonstrated that Ni-containing CeO2 (NiCeOx) nanoparticles were located on the surface of the NiCeOx-4 catalyst that was prepared using the hydrothermal method. As a result, the NiCeOx-4 catalyst had strong reducibility, a large number of active oxygen species, and strong ability to break the C-H bond of propane, which led to higher catalytic activity for propane combustion.
Highly Efficient Oxidation of Propane at Low Temperature over a Pt-Based Catalyst by Optimization Support

Abstract:Pt-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention in environmental protection applications, especially in the catalytic destruction of light alkane pollutants. However, developing a satisfying platinum catalyst with high activity, excellent water-resistance, and practical suitability for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperature is challenging. In this study, the Pt catalyst supported on the selected Nb2O5 oxide exhibited an efficient catalytic activity in propane oxidation and exceeded that of most catalysts reported in the literature. More importantly, the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst maintained excellent activity and durability even after high-temperature aging at 700 °C and under harsh working conditions, such as a certain degree of moisture, high space velocity, and composite pollutants. The excellent performance of the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst was attributed to the abundant metallic Pt species stabilized on the surface of Nb2O5, which prompted the C-H bond dissociation ability as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, propane was initially activated via oxidehydrogenation and followed the acrylate species path as a more efficient propane oxidation path on the Pt/Nb2O5 surface. Overall, Pt/Nb2O5 can be considered a promising catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of alkanes from industrial sources and could provide inspiration for designing superb catalysts for the oxidation of light alkanes.
Weakening Mn-O Bond Strength in Mn-Based Perovskite Catalysts to Enhance Propane Catalytic Combustion

Abstract:Exploring highly efficient and robust non-noble metal catalysts for VOC abatement is crucial but challenging. Mn-based perovskites are a class of redox catalysts with good thermal stability, but their activity in the catalytic combustion of light alkanes is insufficient. In this work, we modulated the Mn-O bond strength in a Mn-based perovskite via defect engineering, over which the catalytic activity of propane combustion was significantly enhanced. It demonstrates that the oxygen vacancy concentration and the Mn-O bond strength can be efficiently modulated by finely tuning the Ni content in SmNixMn1-xO3 perovskite catalysts (SNxM1-x), which in turn can enhance the redox ability and generate more active oxygen species. The SN0.10M0.90 catalyst with the lowest Mn-O bond strength exhibits the lowest apparent activation energy, over which the propane conversion rate increases by 3.6 times compared to that on the SmMnO3 perovskite catalyst (SM). In addition, a SN0.10M0.90/cordierite monolithic catalyst can also exhibit a remarkable catalytic performance and deliver excellent long-term durability (1000 h), indicating broad prospects in industrial applications. Moreover, the promotional effect of Ni substitution was further unveiled by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work brings a favorable guidance for the exploration of highly efficient perovskite catalysts for light alkane elimination.
Less Is More: Selective-Atom-Removal-Derived Defective MnOx Catalyst for Efficient Propane Oxidation

Abstract:Defect manipulation in metal oxide is of great importance in boosting catalytic performance for propane oxidation. Herein, a selective atom removal strategy was developed to construct a defective manganese oxide catalyst, which involved the partial etching of a Mg dopant in MnOx. The resulting MgMnOx-H catalysts exhibited superior low-temperature catalytic activity (T50 = 185 °C, T90 = 226 °C) with a propane conversion rate of 0.29 μmol·gcat.-1·h-1 for the propane oxidation reaction, which is 4.8 times that of pristine MnOx. Meanwhile, a robust hydrothermal stability was guaranteed at 250 °C for 30 h of reaction time. The comprehensive experimental characterizations revealed that the catalytic performance improvement was closely related to the defective structures including the abundant (metal and oxygen) vacancies, distorted crystals, valence imbalance, etc., which prominently weakened the Mn-O bond and stimulated the mobility of surface lattice oxygen, leading to the elevation in the intrinsic oxidation activity. This work exemplifies the significance of defect engineering for the promotion of the oxidation ability of metal oxide, which will be valuable for the further development of efficient non-noble metal catalysts for propane oxidation.

Abstract:High-performance non-noble metal catalyst development is always the pursuit for the VOCs oxidation. Herein, a multi-defective spinel catalyst was intelligently built with a mechano-chemical strategy by Na assisted milling of NiCo2O4, wherein, the incorporation of Ni into the spinel oxide could introduce cationic defects, the etching by Na brought anionic defects, while the milling process fractured the bulk and facilitated the exposure of surface defects. Thereout, the obtained D-NiCo2O4 was endowed with a significantly elevated oxygen vacancies, raised active oxygen species, enhanced oxygen mobility and an increased specific surface area. The beneficial features promise D-NiCo2O4 a superb activity for propane catalytic oxidation, exhibiting a T50 (temperature at 50% propane conversion) of 187 degrees C and T90 (temperature at 90% propane conversion) of 194 degrees C at propane space velocity of 60,000 mL.g(-1) h(-1), which outperformed that of pristine NiCo2O4 and Co3O4 catalyst, making itself one of the most outstanding non-noble metal catalysts for propane oxidation. This work set the paradigm to enhance the VOCs oxidation performance of metal oxide catalyst by multi-defects engineering.
Fabrication of highly dispersed Pd-Mn3O4 catalyst for efficient catalytic propane total oxidation

Abstract:Adjusting the interaction between dual active components for enhancing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) degradation is an effective but still challenging means of air pollution control. Herein, a limited pyrolysis oxidation strategy was adopted to prepare Pd-Mn3O4 spinel catalysts with uniform morphology and active component dispersion. Among these, 1.08Pd-Mn3O4 presented the highest catalytic efficiency with a T90 value of 240 °C, which was 94 °C lower than that of Mn3O4. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results revealed that the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect between Pd and Mn3O4 promoted the redistribution of surface charges, thus strengthening the oxidation-reduction ability of the active sites. Moreover, the SMSI effect led to a better migration of surface oxygen species, and boosted the generation of active surface oxygen species. Simultaneously, the Pd catalyst further reduced the energy barrier in the initial stage of the dehydrogenation of propane. Overall, this study provided a novel design strategy for dual active components catalysts with SMSI effect and extended the application of these catalysts in the important field of VOCs elimination.

Abstract:Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is one of the most effective technologies to produce propene. Non-noble zinc-based catalysts have paid increasing attention because of low cost and nontoxic, compared with industrial Pt and Cr-based catalysts. However, they often suffer from limited catalytic activity and poor stability. Here, we introduced moderate Ni into ZnO supported Silicalite-1 zeolite to increase catalytic activity and stability simultaneously. Zn2+ was the definite active site and NiZn alloy facilitated the sluggish H recombination into H2 via reverse spillover. Furthermore, the introduction of Ni increased Lewis acid strength caused by electron transfer from ZnO to NiZn alloy, contributing to improved stability. For resulted 0.5NiZn/S-1, propene formation rate was 0.18 mol C3H6·(g Zn)−1·h−1 at 550 °C, which was above 1.5 times higher than that over Zn/S-1 without Ni. Under stability test, the deactivation of 0.5NiZn/S-1 was 0.019 h−1, which was only 1/10 of that over Zn/S-1.
A Low-Noble-Metal Ru@CoMn2O4 Spinel Catalyst for the Efficient Oxidation of Propane

Abstract:Noble metals have become a research hotspot for the oxidation of light alkanes due to their low ignition temperature and easy activation of C-H; however, sintering and a high price limit their industrial applications. The preparation of effective and low-noble-metal catalysts still presents profound challenges. Herein, we describe how a Ru@CoMn2O4 spinel catalyst was synthesized via Ru in situ doping to promote the activity of propane oxidation. Ru@CoMn2O4 exhibited much higher catalytic activity than CoMn2O4, achieving 90% propane conversion at 217 °C. H2-TPR, O2-TPD, and XPS were used to evaluate the catalyst adsorption/lattice oxygen activity and the adsorption and catalytic oxidation capacity of propane. It could be concluded that Ru promoted synergistic interactions between cobalt and manganese, leading to electron transfer from the highly electronegative Ru to Co2+ and Mn3+. Compared with CoMn2O4, 0.1% Ru@CoMn2O4, with a higher quantity of lattice oxygen and oxygen mobility, possessed a stronger capability of reducibility, which was the main reason for the significant increase in the activity of Ru@CoMn2O4. In addition, intermediates of the reaction between adsorbed propane and lattice oxygen on the catalyst were monitored by in situ DRIFTS. This work highlights a new strategy for the design of a low-noble-metal catalyst for the efficient oxidation of propane.

Cobalt-Doped MnO2 Nanofibers for Enhanced Propane Oxidation

Abstract:We develop a host guest strategy to construct cobalt-doped MnO2 nanofibers with dual reactive sites, which exhibit high activity for propane deep oxidation. After the incorporation of cobalt (the actual molar ratio of Co/Mn up to 0.15), no distinct changes of crystal structure and morphology of MnO2 nanofibers were observed, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The optimized MnCo0.2 nanofibers possessed the advantages of Mn and Co and exhibited the propane conversion of 50% (T-50) and 90% (T-90) at 205 and 223 degrees C, respectively. The Co-related species is more responsible for reducing the light-off temperature (T-50), whereas the Mn-related species helps more to decrease complete oxidation temperature (T-90). Furthermore, the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results revealed the roles of Co-related species and Mn-related species during propane adsorption and oxidation. The finding demonstrates the win-win effect of two active oxides and provides a solution for developing highly efficient propane oxidation catalysts.
Fe-doped MnO 2 as an efficient catalyst for low temperature propane oxidation

Abstract:Manganese oxides were received extensive attention on account of its low cost, variable valence state and excellent redox properties. Herein, we successfully prepared various Fe-doped MnO 2 catalysts to further improve the catalytic activity of MnO 2 on propane. Physicochemical characterization results displayed that with the increase of Fe doping amounts, the crystalline phase of MnO 2 gradually changed from α-MnO 2 and β-MnO 2 to Fe 2 O 3 , the particle size of catalysts decreased and the specific surface area increased. However, increasing the content of Fe could not monotonically enhance the catalytic performance of catalysts on propane. When the molar ratio of Fe/Mn was 0.25, the largest amount of Mn 4+ species and lattice oxygen species were exposed on the surface of Mn8Fe2, and showed the best low temperature reducibility, which was ascribed to the synergistic effect between Mn and Fe was enhanced. It presented optimal catalytic activity for propane oxidation with temperature of propane conversion at 90% (T 90 ) as low as 279 °C under 0.1% propane and 5% O 2 . This work provided a new way to design and synthesize efficient non-noble metal catalysts for the elimination of propane, which had certain application value.

Abstract:Crystal facet and defect engineering are crucial for designing heterogeneous catalysts. In this study, different solvents were utilized to generate NiO with distinct shapes (hexagonal layers, rods, and spheres) using nickel-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors. It was shown that the exposed crystal facets of NiO with different morphologies differed from each other. Various characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that hexagonal-layered NiO (NiO-L) possessed excellent low-temperature reducibility and oxygen migration ability. The (111) crystal plane of NiO-L contained more lattice defects and oxygen vacancies, resulting in enhanced propane oxidation due to its highest O 2 adsorption energy. Furthermore, the higher the surface active oxygen species and surface oxygen vacancy concentrations, the lower the C−H activation energy of the NiO catalyst and hence the better the catalytic activity for the oxidation of propane. Consequently, NiO-L exhibited remarkable catalytic activity and good stability for propane oxidation. This study provided a simple strategy for controlling NiO crystal facets, and demonstrated that the oxygen defects could be more easily formed on NiO(111) facets, thus would be beneficial for the activation of C−H bonds in propane. In addition, the results of this work can be extended to the other fields, such as propane oxidation to propene, fuel cells, and photocatalysis.

Abstract:A series of metal-doped alpha-MnO2 catalysts (M-MnO2, M = Ni, Cu, Co) were synthesized via a novel ethylene glycol (EG) reduction strategy for the first time, based on initial reduction of KMnO4 with EG and subsequent heteroatom doping at room temperature, and used for catalytic toluene combustion. The obtained catalysts have been full characterized by XRD, XRF, N-2 adsorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, H-2-TPR, O-2-TPD, and C7H8-TPSR. It was found that the catalytic properties of alpha-MnO2 can be significantly improved by nickel doping, a remarkable lowtemperature performance (T-90 = 199 degrees C) has been achieved over Ni-MnO2 catalyst, which is among the best reported values. Meanwhile, Ni-MnO2 has also exhibited high catalytic stability with strong water tolerance (5 vol%) in the oxidation of toluene. Herein, the relationship between catalyst structure and catalytic activity has been elucidated. The outstanding catalytic properties can be related to the synergistic effect between Mn and doped Ni species for the adsorption and activation of toluene. Significantly, the substitutional doping of Ni2+ into octahedra MnO6 frameworks could not only improve the redox properties, lattice oxygen mobility and the formation of more active lattice oxygen, but also promote the toluene adsorption. Additionally, a potential catalytic reaction process base on the Mars and van Krevelen mechanism was also proposed. Hence, this work paves a new way for the design and synthesis of high efficient catalysts for the elimination of volatile organic compounds.
Finned Zn-MFI zeolite encapsulated noble metal nanoparticle catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide

Abstract:Oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO 2 -ODP) characterizes the tandem dehydrogenation of propane to propylene with the reduction of the greenhouse gas of CO 2 to valuable CO. However, the existing catalyst is limited due to the poor activity and stability, which hinders its industrialization. Herein, we design the finned Zn-MFI zeolite encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) as bifunctional catalysts () for CO 2 -ODP. Characterization results reveal that the Zn 2+ species are coordinated with the MFI zeolite matrix as isolated cations and the NPs of Pt, Rh, or RhPt are highly dispersed in the zeolite crystals. The isolated Zn 2+ cations are very effective for activating the propane and the small NPs are favorable for activating the CO 2 , which synergistically promote the selective transformation of propane and CO 2 to propylene and CO. As a result, the optimal 0.25%Rh0.50% catalyst shows the best propylene yield, satisfactory CO 2 conversion, and long-term stability. Moreover, considering the tunable synergetic effects between the isolated cations and NPs, the developed approach offers a general guideline to design more efficient CO 2 -ODP catalysts, which is validated by the improved performance of the bifunctional catalysts via simply substituting Sn 4+ cations for Zn 2+ cations in the MFI zeolite matrix.

Abstract:Nb2O5 supports with pompom (Nb2O5-P), froth (Nb2O5-F) and layer-like (Nb2O5-L) morphologies were synthesized for the fabrication of supported MnO x catalysts. It has been demonstrated that the obtained catalysts exhibited variable catalytic activities for propane oxidation and notable diversity of physicochemical properties, which was closely related to the interface interaction between MnO x nanoparticles and Nb2O5 supports. Based on the comparison with a bulk catalyst (MnO x /Nb2O5-B), it was found that the morphology construction of Nb2O5 supports was favorable for boosting the catalytic activities of the catalysts, generally following an order of MnO x /Nb2O5-L > MnO x /Nb2O5-F > MnO x /Nb2O5-P > MnO x /Nb2O5-B. The optimum catalytic activity of MnO x /Nb2O5-L was attributed to its good surface dispersion, small dimension of MnO x nanoparticles and strong metal-support interaction, leading to significantly high low-temperature reducibility and lattice oxygen mobility, plentiful surface oxygen species and great proportion of Mn4 +/Mn3 +. However, MnO x /Nb2O5-L possessed inadequate thermal and catalytic stability with irreversible deactivation after long-term catalytic reactions. Characterization results of the deactivated catalyst revealed that the severe agglomeration and sintering of surface MnO x nanoparticles resulted in dramatically poor surface metal dispersion, low redox capacity and serious shortage of surface active oxygen species, which were recognized to be the predominant factors responsible for catalytic deactivation.

Abstract:The efficient catalytic oxidation of propane, as a short-chain alkane, remains challenging in environmental catalysis. High-entropy oxides (HEOs) exhibit advantages in abundant and well-dispersed elemental composition, exceptional thermal stability, and enriched lattice defects. Herein, (CrMnFeCoNi)Ox HEO catalysts are successfully synthesized by using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) route, without any subsequent calcination processes. This route yields HEOs with fine particle sizes, high specific surface areas, and abundant near-surface lattice oxygen compared to the traditional coprecipitation method. Notably, the propane conversion over the CHFS-made (CrMnFeCoNi)Ox HEO reaches 90% at 255 °C, with an apparent activation energy of 53.2 kJ/mol, mainly attributed to its enriched lattice oxygen and enhanced oxygen mobility that prevent the accumulation of acetates and the consequent occupation of active sites. In comparison to commercial Pt/Al2O3 and Pd/Al2O3, (CrMnFeCoNi)Ox HEO demonstrates exceptional activity and can maintain long-term stability under high-temperature (upon 650 °C) and moisture-rich conditions (at 2-10 vol %). These attributes highlight its potential as a promising substitute for noble metal catalysts in industrial applications.
