Abstract:There will be array parabolic antenna or directly-radiating array antenna set on the satellites to get shaped beams. But when the frequency increases there will exist two negative factors in the network. So when there needs an overlay for a certain area, single-feed and single reflector can also act and work well and replace the two methods mentioned above and it can lead to good result. This method needs no electronic adjustment and costs less and the radio-waste will be low too. A new far field synthesis method is provided in the paper, in which the aperture plane is meshed and the integral variables can be separated in every mesh, then the Fresnel integral is used to improve the computing speed. The upper truss end coordinates are regarded as the optimizing parameters to form the beam. A rectangle area and the China area were simulated as two beam-forming examples using this method. The radiation field in the service areas distributed more evenly, and there were more energy in the controlling region after beam forming. The reflector design was performed and the deployment test as the whole antenna was carried out last year. Copyright IAF/IAA. All rights reserved.
Design and Fabrication of New Type Reflect Array Antenna

Abstract:Presents a new architectures of the reflect array antenna, it is useful to reduce the weight and the volume of antenna when it is un-deployed. In order to mitigate the wrinkle, the shape of the cable was proved to be a circle. A detailed method of computing the cable system was introduced. The most fundamental structural component of this antenna is the spring tape reinforced aluminum laminate inflatable boom. The correctness of the nonlinear buckling analysis was proved by experiment. The influence of the thickness, the central angle of the spring tape and the thickness of the aluminum laminate to the supporting capacity of the boom were studied. At the end, this new type reflect array antenna was made, the surface precision of this antenna was measured, the result shows that this kind of new type antenna is suitable for application.

Abstract:To improve the transmission efficiency of Cassegrain antennas and enable the simultaneous transmission of signals with different wavelengths in the antenna system, this study introduces Fresnel lenses and conical lenses in front of the Cassegrain antenna at the transmitting end. Reflective mirrors and focusing lenses are introduced at the receiving end. A detailed description is provided of the design process for the Fresnel lens, as well as the impact of various parameters on the hollow radius when combined with the conical lens. Based on the laws of vector reflection and refraction, simulations are performed to track the propagation of light through the entire communication system and lens pairs, providing transmission efficiency plots of the antenna system under deflection and off-axis conditions. Taking into account practical factors such as lens chamfer, transmittance, Cassegrain antenna reflectance, and material dispersion, the transmission efficiency of the antenna system at 1550 nm wavelength can still reach 93.45%. The proposed method not only improves the transmission efficiency of Cassegrain antennas, but also enables the transmission of different information through the inner and outer layers of the antenna system.

Abstract:This paper deals with the initial shape analysis, cutting-pattern analysis, surface accuracy measurement and modal testing of high-precision inflatable antennas reflectors that are intended for spaceflight applications. The initial shape analysis method, formulated on the basis of membrane theory and elastic mechanics, determines the required as-manufactured shape of the reflective surface of the antenna reflector. On the other hand, the cutting-pattern analysis method, with its formulation based on spring-mass representations, numerically calculates the required cutting pattern of the planar membrane gores that are to be assembled to form the 3-dimensional reflective surface. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed analysis methods, a 3.2-m antenna reflector model was designed, manufactured, and assembled for ground demonstration and testing. The reflective surface accuracy of this demonstration reflector model was measured by a photogrammetric measuring system. Shape adjustments of the reflective surface were performed by systematically adjusting the tension in the cables that were used to mount the reflector to its support structure. It was found that the reflective surface accuracy of the reflector model, as defined by its RMS error from a best-fit parabolic shape, was less than 1mm. In addition, dynamic and RF tests were also performed on the demonstration reflector model. The test results indicated that the first-mode frequency of the reflector model agreed well with the corresponding analytical prediction, and its radiation pattern was also well focused.

Abstract:We propose a circularly polarized cavity‐backed slot (CBS) antenna which is composed of two symmetrically placed L‐shaped slots on a 150 × 100 mm 2 ground plane (back side) and fed by a microstrip network on the opposite plane (front side). A metal cavity is placed at the back side to reduce the effect caused by the wall behind the antenna and enhance the radiation on the front side; in this way it is suitable to be “buried‐on‐wall.” Simulation results of the return loss, radiation patterns, axial ratios, and gain are presented. The antenna was fabricated on FR‐4 substrate and the measured return loss agrees well with the simulated one. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:3D shape optimization algorithm is presented for the electromagnetic devices carrying eddy current. The formulae for the design sensitivity and the adjoint variable are derived in complex form in terms of 3D finite element method for eddy current problems. The proposed 3D mesh regeneration method based on the structural deformation analysis is problem independent and sufficient to obtain a smooth contour with proper mesh quality. The algorithm integrates 3D finite element performance analysis, steepest descent method with design sensitivity and mesh relocation method. Numerical applications to the shape optimum design of shielding plates show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and optimal design system.

Abstract:In the paper, a new design scheme of high-performance multi-beam antenna is proposed. In the antenna design, the beam gain (G) and carrier-to-interference ratio (C/I) are taken as the optimization goal, the reflector surface is discretized and decomposed into multiple shaped control points as optimization variables, and the shaped surface of the reflector is changed by optimizing the normal undulation of each point in the parabolic plane to achieve the required gain and C/I performance of each beam comprehensively. This design method can realize the construction and optimization of complex objective functions under the requirements of ultra-wide coverage and different beam widths by adopting enhanced BAT algorithm. Compared with the traditional multi-aperture antenna, this antenna technology reduces the number of antennas from 3 or 4 to 1 by using an oversized reflector. A set of numerical experiments is provided to validate the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel hybrid antenna configuration, which combines two kinds of high-performance antennas, i.e., reflectarray and transmitarray, creating a low-profile low-cost low-mass design with both amplitude and phase distribution controls. In this hybrid arrangement, a flat Cassegrain reflectarray, with compact ring focus, is implemented as the feed to illuminate the upper transmitarray. In the process of reflectarray design, the particle swarm optimization technique is utilized to synthesize the phase distribution on the reflectarray aperture to generate a desired amplitude distribution on the upper transmitarray aperture. During the transmitarray design process, the dimensions of the double-loop elements of the upper transmitarray are adjusted to compensate for the phase delay of the wave from the lower reflectarray and form a desired phase distribution on the transmitarray aperture. A detailed design procedure for a Cassegrain-reflectarray-fed transmitarray antenna with a small focus-to-diameter ratio of 0.3 is presented. The simulated and measured results demonstrate that the hybrid-configuration antenna can achieve an aperture efficiency of around 40%.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a beam forming approach capable of synthesizing versatile, pre-specified beam shapes using concentric excitations satisfying multiple weighted sinc or Bessel function distribution. We show by both theoretical calculation and full wave simulation that by tuning different weights of a sinc or Bessel function distribution, not only radiation beams with pencil, flat-topped and bimodal shapes can be synthesized, but also the beam-width and the side lobe level can be independently adjusted. An example is provided to demonstrate how an isoflux beam aiming at a better coverage of the earth surface is synthesized, and how an optimized continuous distribution is properly discretized for a physical realization of a satellite aperture array antenna. The approach proposed in this paper can be applied to a wide range of applications that require performance optimization of concentric ring array antennas.

Abstract:The central obstruction of secondary mirror causes a large loss of energy. This paper provides an optimization that a pair of cone-parabola mirrors are added in the Cassegrain optical antenna, which can fully utilize the unused energy. Taking into account of process craft, chamfers are added on the top of the cone and the connection surface between the parabola and the cone of the secondary mirror. A series of optimum structure parameters are analyzed in detail. A main point is that, after considering the reflectivity, transmission efficiency can be improved to 97.27% by our approach. This result demonstrates a better performance than traditional antenna.

Abstract:Vortex electromagnetic wave with high gain has excellent potential in terahertz communication systems. In this paper, a Cassegrain antenna that can generate a high-gain orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode-tunable beam is proposed in D-band. The antenna is composed of three parts, i.e., the linear polarized corrugated horn feed, paraboloid reflector, and sub-reflector composed of the metasurface. The OAM mode is tuned by adjusting the arrangement of elements in the sub-reflector. The simulation results show that the gains of different OAM beams at 150 GHz are more significant than 42.9 dBi while maintaining good mode purity of more than 95%, which can provide a good candidate for the combination of terahertz technology and OAM techniques in the coming 6G age.

Abstract:Combining the advantages of the phase tunability provided by active frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) and the beam-steering scheme used in conventional 1-D Fresnel-zone-plate (FZP) antennas, we report in this communication a 2-D beam-steering FZP antenna that needs only 180° phase tunability. Compared with transmit arrays, while the substrate layers are reduced by a half, a phase compensation strategy is used to enhance antenna specifications. To verify the proposed approach, a radome implemented based on an active, reconfigurable FSS was designed, simulated, and experimentally implemented. With a simple three-layer structure, the implemented FZP antenna works within an ultrawide bandwidth ranging from 5 to 6.3 GHz, corresponding to a 21% relative bandwidth. With a gain up to 19.3 dBi, the scanning range reaches ±45° in both horizontal and vertical planes. This cost-effective, simple-structured antenna can be potentially used in diverse RF and microwave applications.

Abstract:Unlike the conventional design of aspheric shaping systems, in order to provide a laser source for applications such as multi-beam laser interference, which can maintain evenly distributed power over a large distance, the influence of shape parameter and aperture on long-distance propagation performance of Kepler refractive beam shaping system is studied. Current work describes the lens, designed automatically by using ZEMAX programming language (ZPL), and simulations of Kepler refractive shaping systems of flattened Lorenz (FL) beams with different shape parameters and apertures.
A Design Method for Low-Profile Wide-Angle Scanning Reconfigurable Transmitarray

Abstract:The space-fed reconfigurable transmitarray (RTA) is considered as a cost-effective solution for millimeter-wave phased array. However, it suffers from the inherent high profile due to the space fed by a single horn antenna with large $F/D$ ratio. In this work, a design method which can simultaneously reduce the focal distance and extend the scanning range is presented. Moreover, we demonstrate the experimental implementation of a RTA with $16\times 8$ reconfigurable unit cells closely space fed by $1\times 2$ patch array. The measured scan ranges up to ±70° with a scan loss better than 4 dB, the focal ratio ( $\mathrm{F}/\mathrm{D}$ ) is 0.27 and the total profile is reduced to 21.7 mm, corresponding to only $1.96\lambda_{0}$ at 27 GHz. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to implement cost-effective, low-profile, wide-angle scanning phased arrays for radar detection and satellite communications.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel beam-switching array, which uses four patch elements to generate two anti-symmetric-shaped patterns, is proposed. Beam shaping is introduced into this design to realize a flat response in its two beams ±45° covering regions with less than ±0.55 dB fluctuation. A synthesis process is derived in detail, and a prototype, including the array and a planar feeding structure, is built and tested. The measurement result agrees well with the simulated one, which verifies the validity of the synthesis algorithm.

Abstract:High-gain single-feed antennas are desired for current and future wireless systems. Slot-based highly overmoded cavity antennas are one solution, but the fact that they can only radiate broadside beams limits their applications. An innovative phase-control technique is developed for slot-based resonant cavity antennas that utilize a planar array of closely spaced, appropriately sized metallic patches integrated into the very near field of their slot arrays. It facilitates the design and realization of the phase distribution over their radiating aperture that is required for them to generate single and/or multiple tilted beams pointed at specified directions. A TE(10)(11)(0)-mode slot-based cavity antenna is selected as the pathfinder system. A TE110-mode single-slot cavity antenna that is equivalent to the half-wavelength subsection of that cavity is introduced initially to monitor the phase radiated from each slot. The phase control surface is then carefully engineered to facilitate tilted output beams from the base design. The approach is validated with two subsequent tilted-beam systems. The first system achieves a single beam tilted to 30° with respect to the broadside direction. The second system is extended to produce two independently directed titled beams pointing at −10° and 20°, respectively. All of the measured results agree well with their simulated values.

A Low Profile Broadband Cassegrain Reflectarray

Abstract:In this paper, a compact Cassegrain reflectarray with low profile and broad gain bandwidth is presented. The proposed Cassegrain antenna consists of three parts, or more specifically to be a main reflectarray, a sub-reflector and a waveguide feed source. In particular, a highly-polarized microstrip grating is designed as the sub-reflector in order to substantially improve the polarization purity of the final engineered Cassegrain antenna. By employing a 90° polarization convertor, the main reflectarray is not only capable of realizing broad radiation bandwidth but also able to convert wave to its cross-polarized counterpart. By combining the main and sub-reflector, the finally assembled Cassegrain antenna is numerically simulated. The results indicate a 48% 3-dB gain bandwidth (13 - 21.2 GHz), and by introducing a sub-reflector, the F/D ratio is drastically reduced to 0.32.

Abstract:A novel method of synthesizing shaped-beam cylindrical conformal array by rotating the antenna elements and optimizing their excitation phases is presented. Rotation of antennas on curved surface is mathematically described by rotating its vectorial active element pattern (VAEP) in its local coordinate system (LCS). Then the scalar patterns and polarization unit vectors of all the rotated VAEPs are properly transformed and then interpolated at a unified angle sampling grid in a common coordinate system, where they are summed to obtain an approximated array expression. With this expression, element rotations and phases can be optimized using the constriction factor particle swarm optimization (CF-PSO) to synthesize desired shaped-beam pattern with controlled sidelobe level (SLL) and cross-polarization level (XPL). However, since rotations on curved surface introduce considerable variations to the element curvature and mutual coupling (MC), the synthesized array pattern would have considerable errors. A refined strategy is adopted then to improve the synthesis accuracy. The proposed method uses uniform amplitude weighting, thus saving many unequal power dividers. Three typical shaped pattern synthesis examples are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. A cylindrical array prototype with 24 rotated U-slot loaded patch antennas is fabricated and measured for practical validation.

A W-Band High-Aperture-Efficiency Multipolarized Monopulse Cassegrain Antenna Fed by Phased Microstrip Patch Quad

Abstract:In this letter, a W-band multipolarized monopulse Cassegrain antenna is proposed, in which a phased dual-polarized microstrip patch quad is employed to feed the hyperbolic subreflector. Due to the more even polarization distribution on the aperture of the quad, the high aperture efficiency of the Cassegrain antenna is achieved. Simulation results verify that the microstrip patch quad is qualified to work as the multipolarized monopulse feed source by adjusting phases and amplitudes among the four feed ports. The metallic structure of this W-band multipolarized monopulse Cassegrain antenna is fabricated by using high-precision milling machine to assure the design parameters. At 94 GHz, the integral gain is 39.6 dBi and the aperture efficiency is 51.9%. Measurement results demonstrate the proposed antenna has excellent polarization synthesis and polarized monopulse performances further.

Abstract:A beam-scanning reflectarray antenna with an offset mechanically rotational horn is presented in this paper. Bifocal design method is employed to reduce the phase error caused by the rotational horn and the offset-feed structure is utilized to minimize the feed blockage effect on the broadside beams. The simulation results show that good scanning performance can be achieved with aperture efficiency larger than 51.4% within +/- 15 degrees scan angle and the gain loss of a 15 degrees scanned beam is about 1.0 dB. The preliminary results demonstrate its promising prospect in satellite communication applications.
