Abstract:Objective To measure the concentration of leptin in cord blood and analysis the correlative factors so as to evaluate the role of leptin in intrauterine growth and development . Methods The concentrations of leptin in cord blood were measured in 80 newborns, 16 preterm infants, 11 small for gestational age(SGA), 31 appropriate for gestational age(AGA), and 22 large for gestational age(LGA) healthy newborns. All serum samples were measured by the method of radioimmunoassay. Results The concentrations of leptin in the preterm newborns were significantly lower than those in term newborns (4.25±3.19 vs 9.86±5.50 ng/ml,P0.001). The leptin values in AGA newborns were significantly greater than those in the SGA(8.91±5.20 vs 5.17±2.46 ng/ml, P0.05), and significantly lower than those in LGA newborns(8.91±5.20 vs 13.56±4.67 ng/ml, P0.01). Cord blood leptin were correlated positively with gestation age, birth weight, length, Kaup index, head circumference, placental weight, cord blood insulin and blood lipid. Multiple regression analysis showed weight, sex and gestation age to be independent predictors of serum leptin values. Conclusion There are different leptin concentrations of cord blood in neonate. Weight, sex and gestation age are independent predictors of serum leptin values. Leptin plays an important role in intrauterine growth and development.
