Abstract:Experimental results of tri-stable phenomena in an argon-gas discharge plasma are briefly reported in this paper. The sudden jumps and hysteresis are phenomenologically analyzed by catastrophe theory. An intuitive physical picture of these phenomena is given by analyzing the states in a potential well.

Abstract:Classical plasma are typically of low density and/or high temperature. Two of its basic properties are Landau damping and two-stream instabilities. When increasing the plasma density, quantum effects appear and beam-plasma interactions show behavior different from the classical cases. We revisit Landau damping and two-stream instabilities under conditions when quantum hydrodynamic and quantum kinetic theory can be applied, the latter accounting for wave-particle interactions. We find that the instability growth rate behaves as pure two-stream instability without Landau damping when the countering stream velocity exceeds a certain threshold, which differs from the classical case.

Abstract:For plasmas in an extremely high-density state, like stellar cores or compressed fuel in inertial fusion facilities, their behavior turns out to be quite different when compared with those plasmas in interstellar space or magnetic confinement devices. To figure out those differences and uncover the kinetic physics in electrostatic excitations, a quantum kinetic code solving Wigner-Poisson equations has been developed. Basic plasmon decay, Landau damping, and two-stream instability of extremely high-density plasmas are investigated by using our newly developed code. Numerical simulations show that in the linear region, the dispersion relations of intrinsic modes can be significantly affected by quantum effects, and such simulation results can be well described by the existing analytical theory. Especially in the nonlinear region, since the space-time scale of collective modes of plasmas is comparable to the electron de Broglie wavelength, their couplings produce some new physics: the energy exchange between the electron and the collective mode results in an abnormal oscillation that does not exist in classical plasmas.
On-Off Intermittencies in Gas Discharge Plasma

Abstract:In this paper we report two on-off intermittency phenomena observed in a gas discharge plasma system. The laminar phase distribution of the intermittencies is studied in various situations. The Poincare bifurcation and another type of bifurcation, namely, "period-period" bifurcation, are identified as the underlying system dynamics, respectively. Based on these bifurcations, numerical models are constructed, which basically explain most of the experimental observations. A theoretical discussion is also presented.

Abstract:In the framework of studies devoted to hazardous waste destruction, an original dc double anode plasma torch has been designed and tested, which produces an elongated, weak fluctuation and reproducible plasma jet at atmospheric pressure. The arc instabilities and dynamic behavior of the double arc argon-nitrogen plasma jet are investigated through the oscillations of electrical signals by combined means of fast Fourier transform and Wigner distribution. In our experiment, the restrike mode is identified as the typical fluctuation behavior in an argon-nitrogen plasma jet. The Fourier spectra and Wigner distributions exhibit two characteristic frequencies of 150 Hz and 4.1 kHz, which reveals that the nature of fluctuations in the double arc argon-nitrogen plasma can be ascribed to the undulation of the power supply and both arc roots motion on the anode channels. In addition, the microscopic properties of the plasma jet inside and outside the arc chamber are investigated by means of optical emission spectroscopy, which yields excitation, electronic, rotational, and vibrational temperatures, as well as the electron number density. The results allow us to examine the validity criteria of a local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) state in the plasma arc. The measured electron densities are in good agreement with those calculated from the LTE model, which indicates that the atmospheric double arc argon-nitrogen plasma in the core region is close to the LTE state under our experimental conditions. Abstract:<p>A plasma's working gas is a significant factor affecting their discharge characteristics and the induced chemistries during plasma–water interactions. However, the effects on the discharge mode and discharge stability have not been fully investigated. This study focuses on the discharge mode transition and stability with nitrogen and oxygen gases. Compared with the oxygen discharge, the nitrogen discharge remained stable over a larger voltage range and long duration time. A diffuse mode discharge had better stability and lower plasma activity for both nitrogen and oxygen gases, whereas a transient spark mode in nitrogen and filament mode in oxygen had lower stability but a higher plasma activity. This study improves the understanding of the physicochemical processes of plasma–water interactions.</p>

Abstract:In discharges with either high electron density or high gas pressure, it is often believed that an equilibrium Boltzmann distribution among excited particles will be reached due to the presence of strong collisional processes. In this work, using a new collisional-radiative model for low-temperature argon discharges, it is found that the population distribution of atoms in Paschen 2p excited levels significantly deviates from the Boltzmann distribution over a wide operating parameter range found in many discharges reported in the literature. The finding has also been confirmed by experimental measurement for several different types of discharges with pressure ranging from 1 Pa to atmospheric pressure. This result can have a significant impact on both plasma modelling and the interpretation of the optical emission spectra collected from the discharges, in particular in the microdischarges operated at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:This work deals with the numerical study of spontaneous temporal oscillations in an atmospheric pressure glow discharge (APGD) in helium. The transition of helium APGD from stationary to periodic oscillatory state through the Hopf bifurcation, and further from periodic to chaotic oscillations through period-doubling bifurcations is explored. The choice of the discharge and external electric circuits parameters is guided by the relevant experiments. The ballast resistance and supply voltage of the external circuit play the role of control parameters. The method is based on the stability analysis of stationary states of the discharge. The stability diagram predicting parameter regimes at which stable and oscillatory states of the APGD can be expected is obtained. The effects of the discharge parameters (such as the gas gap, secondary electron emission coefficients, and capacitance in the external electric circuit) on the bifurcation curves are identified. The Lorenz map and corresponding period-doubling bifurcation diagram characterizing transition to chaotic oscillations in helium APGD with an increase in the control parameter are derived. The value of the capacitance in the external circuit plays a critical role in the dynamical behavior of the discharge. Decreasing its value contributes to the dissipation/damping of the system, whereas increasing it enhances the irregular behavior of the system.

Abstract:In the experiment of plasma jets generated in a tube dielectric barrier discharge configuration, three distinguishable modes, namely, laminar, transition, and turbulent jet modes, have been identified. Flows of helium, neon, and argon gases shared the hydrodynamic law when their plasma jets spraying into ambient air of atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Aiming to reveal the basic processes, we propose that plasma jet length is mainly determined by reactions involving metastable atoms. These processes are responsible for the variation in plasma jet length versus gas flow rate and working gas species. To investigate this proposal in detail, we have obtained three significant experimental results, i.e., (1) the plasma jet lengths of helium, neon, and argon are different; (2) the plasma jet length of krypton slightly changes with gas flow rate, with three modes indistinguishable; and (3) there are large differences between optical emission spectra of helium, neon, argon, and krypton flow gases. These observations are in good agreement with our proposal.

Abstract:An atmospheric argon plasma jet generated by an original dc double anode plasma torch has been investigated through its electrical and spectroscopic diagnostics. The arc instabilities and dynamic behavior of the argon plasma are analyzed using classical tools such as the statistical method, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and correlation function. The takeover mode is identified as the fluctuation characteristic of the double arc argon plasma jet in our experiment. The FFT and correlation analysis of electrical signals exhibit the only characteristic frequency of 150 Hz, which originates from the torch power and is independent of any change in the operating parameters. No high frequency fluctuations (1-15 kHz) are observed. This indicates that the nature of fluctuations in an argon plasma jet is induced mainly by the undulation of the tri-phase rectified power supply. It is found that each arc root attachment is diffused rather than located at a fixed position on the anode wall. Moreover, the emission spectroscopic technique is performed to determine the electron temperature and number density of the plasma jet inside and outside the arc chamber. Along the torch axis, the measured electron temperature and number density of the double arc argon plasma drop from 12 300K and 7.6 x 10(22) m(-3) at the divergent part of the first anode nozzle, to 10 500K and 3.1 x 10(22) m(-3) at the torch exit. In addition, the validity criteria of the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) state in the plasma arc are examined. The results show that the measured electron densities are in good agreement with those calculated from the LTE model, which indicates that the double arc argon plasma at atmospheric pressure is close to the LTE state under our experimental conditions.

Abstract:An original DC double anode plasma torch has been devised and tested, which generates a long-time and highly stable argon plasma jet at atmospheric pressure. The arc unsteadiness and dynamic behaviour are investigated through the fluctuations of electrical signals combined with the classical tools, such as the statistic method, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and correlation analysis. The current–voltage characteristics of the argon plasma jet show an increasing tendency. The takeover mode is identified as the typical fluctuation behaviour of the double arc argon plasma jet in our experiment. The FFT and correlation calculation results of electrical signals exhibit the only characteristic frequency of 150Hz, whereas the high frequency fluctuations are totally disappeared. Such low frequency fluctuation (150Hz) can be attributed to the inherent characteristic of the torch power source and is independent of any change in the operating parameters. These results indicate that the nature of fluctuation in an argon plasma jet is mainly induced by the undulation of tri-phase rectified power supply. In addition, both arcs are characterized as the one and only system, and each arc root attachment is rather evenly diffused than located at a fixed position on the anode surface. The time shift derived from the cross correlation between the arc voltage and current intensity can be used as an independent parameter to reflect the fluctuating behaviour in the plasma jet.

Abstract:Discharge structure refers to the morphology of different plasma quantities, such as electron temperature, reaction rate, plasma potential, mass flux, net charge and species density, which are determined by plasma transport mechanism and chemical processes. This morphology is rather difficult to refine in complex electronegative plasma for it is contained in a multiple-physics-field coupled system. Regarding this difficulty, the combination of self-consistent simulation, theory analysis and experimental diagnostic of this system is needed. In the scope of present article, the fluid simulation and analytic theory are utilized to investigate the Ar/Cl2 inductive plasma, via a cyclic tuning of discharge pressure and feedstock gas content parameters when fixing the power. Classic discharge structure (e.g., delta, parabola, flat-top, and hollow) and specific discharge mechanisms (e.g., self-coagulation, physics coagulation, de-coagulation, grouping behavior and the ambi-polar diffusion of triple species) are revealed. Besides, the two types of discharge stratification, i.e., space and species, are presented. Many non-neutralities are generated during the transport process of electronegative plasma when it gives rise to the discharge structure, which are summed and analyzed for better understanding the plasma.

Abstract:The analysis of experimental investigations of equilibrium, interaction and dynamics of vortex structures in pure electron and gas-discharge electron nonneutral plasmas during the time much more than the electron-neutral collision time has been carried out. The problem of long confinement of the column of pure electron plasma in Penning-Malmberg trap is considered. The mechanism of stability of long-lived vortex structure in gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma is investigated. The collapse of electron sheath in gas-discharge nonneutral electron plasma in Penning cell at high pressures of neutral gas is described. The interaction between the stable vortex structure and the annular electron sheath, and the action of vortex structures on the transport of electrons along and across the magnetic field are discussed.

Abstract:Gas–liquid discharges enable efficient plasma–liquid interactions and thus have promising applications, but many concerns remain unanswered regarding working gas, an important influencing factor. Investigations of a pulsed needle-to-water gas–liquid discharge in Ar, He, and N 2 are carried out in this study. Voltage–current waveforms and intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) images were combined to explore discharge modes and evolution processes. Experimental results demonstrate that the Ar tip spark discharge develops all the way to liquid compared with the He and N 2 discharges concentrated in the tube, considerably increasing the plasma–liquid interaction efficiency. According to the optical emission spectra (OES), plasma properties are found to be strongly influenced by interactions between gas particles and interfering particles (H 2 O, etc. ). For instance, excess water vapor causes quenching of excited species, resulting in OH (A–X) in Ar and NO (A–X) in N 2 concentrated in the middle region with weak discharge. By adding dimethyl sulfoxide, it is demonstrated that OH dominates H 2 O 2 production in Ar and contributes to both NO 2 − and NO 3 − generation in Ar and He, whereas in N 2 it only affects NO 3 − generation. This study advances the "bridge building" between practical application and gas–liquid discharge employing different working gases.

Abstract:Discharge phenomena of a nonthermal atmospheric pressure plasma source have been studied. An atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) operates using rf power and produces a stable homogeneous discharge at atmospheric pressure. After breakdown, the APPJ operation is divided into two regimes, a "normal" operating mode when the discharge is stable and homogeneous, and a "failure" mode when the discharge converts into a filamentary arc. Current and voltage (I-V) characteristics and spatially resolved emission intensity profiles have been measured during the normal operating mode. These measurements show that the APPJ produces an alpha (alpha) mode rf capacitive discharge. Based upon a dimensional analysis using the observed I-V characteristics, a rough estimate is made for plasma density of 3 x 10(11) cm(-3) and an electron temperature of 2 eV. In addition, the gas temperature of 120 degreesC has been spectroscopically measured inside the discharge. These plasma parameters indicate that the APPJ shows promise for various materials applications as it can produce substantial amounts of reactive species and avoid thermal damages, while having the advantage of atmospheric pressure operation. Experiment with a small gas-puff z-pinch plasma device

Abstract:Summary form only given. A small gas-puff Z-pinch plasma device is composed of a capacitor energy storage bank (capacitance=16.3 /spl mu/F, charging voltage=23 kV), field distortion switches, a discharge chamber, vacuum pumping system, fast operation gas valve and diagnostics. The amplitude and the period of discharge current are 230 kA and 9.6 /spl mu/s, respectively. Firstly, a hollow gas shell is produced by injecting gas through an annular nozzle from the fast operation valve. Then initiating the switches, a high pulsed current flows through the gas shell to produce a plasma and form hot pinch spots, from which intense X-rays and ion beams are emitted. A compact Thomson ion energy analyzer is installed inside the gas-puff Z-pinch device. By using the analyzer, up to five clear parabolas produced by argon ion bombardment on CR-39 plastic target have been observed. The parabolas are formed by Ar/sup +/, Ar/sup 2+/, Ar/sup 3+/, Ar/sup 4+/ and Ar/sup 5+/ ions. In our experiments, the range of the energy of Ar/sup +/, Ar/sup 2+/ and Ar/sup 3+/ ions are below 400 keV, 700 keV and 1 MeV, respectively.
Propagating plasma discontinuity in a tube immersed in distilled water

Abstract:In a dielectric tube partially surrounded by distilled water, a propagating discontinuity is observed in a cold argon plasma jet at atmospheric pressure in both the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Through electrical and optical diagnostics, the mechanism of formation for this phenomenon is investigated. Results show that the strong polarization of the distilled water, the constraint from the electric field (or a sufficiently high electric field), and the transport of the active species are in combination responsible for the propagating plasma discontinuity. Indeed, smaller surface areas of the tube surrounded by distilled water, shorter distances between the distilled water and the ground electrodes, as well as larger gas flow rates can together make the discontinuous discharge channel appear more readily. In particular, when the flow switches from laminar to turbulent, the plasma behavior of the discontinuity no longer depends on the gas flow rate. This is mostly attributed to the extreme instability of turbulence which further suppresses the transport of active species.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure plasma jets, generated in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge configuration, have been investigated with different flowing gases. Discharge patterns in different tube regions were compared in the flowing gases of helium, neon and krypton. To explain the difference of these discharge patterns, a theoretical analysis is presented to reveal the possible basic processes. A comparison of experimental and theoretical results identifies that Penning ionization is mainly responsible for the discharge patterns of helium and neon plasma jets.

Abstract:Summary form only given. At present, we develop a plasma chamber to research into the decontamination of plasma at atmospheric pressure. The electrode system consists of the coaxial bar electrode and barrel electrode which is covered with a quartz tube. In order to increase the plasma amount, nine of these electrode systems are installed in parallel. We use a 10-30 kHz high voltage power to excite stable plasma. When plasma is generated, many short-lived and narrow streamers can be observed by a fast-camera. In this paper, we will generalize the regularity of this glow-like discharge at different power source frequency, and demonstrate the relationship among flashover voltage, source frequency and variety of working gas. At the same time, the photographs are provided. As at RF frequencies (>10 MHz), the working gas breaks down at only a few hundreds volts far away from that of the kHz frequencies, we also tend to analyze why kHz and MHz domain have different breakdown volts from microscopic views

Abstract:Plasma bubbles are regarded as a promising means of interacting plasma discharges and liquids due to their high efficiency in the generation of reactive species. The discharge mode and characteristics are significant factors that should be considered. In this study, the plasmas are initially generated in the gas phase and then driven by the gas flow to diffuse into the solution through the two holes at the lower part of the quartz tube to form plasma bubbles. The discharge modes, characteristics, and plasma–liquid interactions in two different configurations, i.e., bare electrode and dielectric-coated electrode, are investigated. It is found that the discharge mode induced for the two structures is different, with a hybrid-mode operating in the bare electrode design and a filamentary mode operating in the dielectric design. When the applied voltage is increased, a filamentary-to-spark transition occurs in the bare structure, while the discharge remains relatively stable in the dielectric design. Direct and intense contact between the discharge and the solution in the bare structure greatly promotes the physio-chemical reactions and results in obvious changes in H 2 O 2 concentration, solution p H, conductivity, and temperature. This study provides insights into hybrid gas–liquid discharges and reactor design for plasma bubble generation.
