Abstract:Objective To study the interrelationship of C reactive protein (CRP), chest X ray and sputum cultures in acute exacerbation of COPD of the elderly. Methods Forty seven elderly patients admitted to our hospital with an acute infective exacerbation of COPD were studied. The patients were categorized according to the CRP level. CRP level was normal (8 mg/L) in seven patients (group A), it was 9 39 mg/L in 11 patients (group B) and 40mg/L in 29 patients (group C). Results The sputum cultures were positive in 27 of 47 cases(57.5%). The positive rates were 14.3%, 54.6 % and 72.4% in group A, B, and C., respectively, P 0.01. The incidence of pneumonia in group C was higher than that in group B and group A, P 0.05. The fever in group C was the highest compared with that in group B and group A, P 0.01. Conclusion CRP is correlaled with seriousness of the infection and the pathogenic bacteria in COPD.
