Abstract:At first according to several typical definitions this paper concludes the characteristics of the module, based on which the descriptive model of the module of mechanical product and the concept of the module family are proposed, and then the configurative model of the module family of the mechanical product is discussed, so is the modular design of mechanical products based on the module family. Finally, three methods of the modular design of mechanical products are summarized.

Abstract:：Product modularization is one of the key technologies to realize mass customization, and it is also the foundation of industry 4.0, which can effectively support intelligent manufacturing.The traditional method of product modularization relies on experienced designers and takes a lot of time.And with the increasing number of customized products, the product changes faster and faster, this traditional method is more and more difficult to adapt for the development needs of the current situation.To solve these problems, some intelligent methods in product modularization are proposed, including: product name ontology establishment, product module partition optimization, module generalization and standardization, product main structure establishment etc.By using new generation of artificial intelligence technologies such as swarm intelligence, big data analysis and man-machine coordination, a large number of product module data, user order data and designers' behavior data of using product module are analyzed.By mining the similarity and relevance information such as product name relationship and module relationship hidden in the data, product name ontology, product module division, product common module, module main model and product main structure are determined.As a result, rapid large-scale product modularization is achieved, and the cost and time of product modularization are reduced.Key words：product modularity；modular design；intelligent manufacturing；intelligent modular design；a new generation of artificial intelligence
Modular Design Involving Effectiveness of Multiple Phases for Product Life Cycle

Abstract:Modular products can present many effectiveness scenarios in its product life cycle. Ideally, these scenarios can be achieved simultaneously. However, due to the diverse objectives of different phases, different module forms are required, and accordingly, conflicts may occur. Traditional modular design techniques have been motivated towards delivering variety, but with little incentive for effectiveness of modules per se. To reduce the conflicts, and to maximize the effectiveness of modules throughout product life cycle as much as possible, this paper put forward an effectiveness-driven modular design method which takes all effectiveness scenarios into consideration and balances the granularity and composition of modules among all possible forms during the clustering process. As the basis of effectiveness-driven modular design, a product descriptive model composed of components, interaction attributes, and liaison structure is proposed. Then, to cluster components according to different effectiveness scenarios at different phases, a quantitative split method for liaison structure is proposed. Furthermore, to maximize the effectiveness of the modules, three aggregation rules are put forward. A case study of wheel loader modular design is reported. Results and analyses reveal that the effectiveness-driven modular design excels in supporting modular design for life cycle.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer technology and the urgent need for the frequent modification of CNC equipment, one of the current research hotspots is the encapsulation of existing design results into modules and modeling the modules to make them extendable. On this basis, the rapid development and configuration of CNC equipment can be realized. Therefore, this paper proposes an extensible transformable model based on object-oriented product modules. Extensible transformable methods, instantiated methods, and extensible sets of modules are also studied. A general module design process is devised. This model simplifies the product configuration process, improves the utilization of design knowledge, and solves the compatibility problem of contradictory configurations.

Abstract:As a cost-saving and environmental-friendly product strategy, modular design is an effective approach to shorten lead-time and reduce cost for development of products. However, the modular design of products with complex structure might be plagued by the difficulty of product structure modeling and unreasonable structural modular schemes. In this study, a core components-oriented modularisation method is presented to solve the problem of module division of complex products. The structural model of complex products is reasonably simplified by screening core components, which further reduces the modeling difficulty and improves the solution efficiency of module division scheme. Firstly, a hybrid structure decomposition method is proposed to obtain all components of complex products according to the different structure characteristics of each subsystem of complex products. Secondly, the core components of complex products are screened by calculating the whole life cycle cost (WLCC) of each component, and the design structure matrix (DSM) model of complex products is established according to the relationship between the core components. Finally, the module division scheme of complex products is obtained via hierarchical clustering and modularity evaluation. Effectiveness and robustness of the method are demonstrated through comparison experiments for the modular design of a hydraulic excavator case.

Abstract:The manufacturing industry’s rapid expansion has heightened the demand for computer numerical control (CNC) equipment, particularly for customization and flexible production. Adopting a modular design approach reduces the development cycle and enhances the production flexibility of CNC equipment. However, existing modular design methodologies for CNC equipment still suffer from problems related to standardization and compatibility, which can severely limit the innovativeness of product design and greatly reduce design efficiency. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method for constructing the configuration relationship of CNC equipment modules based on the extensible transformation model. This method tackles intricate dependencies among modules during configuration and transformation, enabling rapid and optimized module configuration. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated through a case study, demonstrating enhanced customization of CNC equipment.

Abstract:In the background of globalization, the information collaboration has become more and more frequent. On the purpose of improving the collaboration, we propose this model for modular products based on the SML technology. According to the features of the modular product, this model consists of two sub-models: the unified SM pool model and the information collaboration model. The first one aims for provide unified SM for enterprises. And it also provides the foundation for information collaboration. Based on the features of modular products, the second one makes work on the interface information modeling for modular products. For further illustration, two collaboration applications are introduced in this paper: information collaboration in enterprise and with others. And based on this model, a software platform system is developed to support the collaboration.

Abstract:Product service system is one new production paradigm for manufacturing enterprises to cope with fierce market competition in service economy environment. Product modularization is an important part of product service system development. In this paper, the design process model of product service system is built on the basis of current product service system modeling methods. Guided by lifecycle-oriented modular design idea, the product function is decomposed and the function units are obtained, which correspond to specific parts in the product. Using fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm based on simulated annealing and genetic algorithm for clustering analysis, the division scheme of product modules is got. Lifecycle-oriented product modular design method pays more attention to environmental attributes of the product, and considers the consciousness of environmental protection and sustainability in product design well. Using CNC machine tools as an example, this paper verifies the reliability, rationality and superiority of presented product module division method oriented on CNC machine tools.
An Integrated Modular Design Methodology Based on Maintenance Performance Consideration

Abstract:Maintenance nowadays not only plays a crucial role in the usage phase, but is fast becoming the primary focus of the design stage—especially with general increased emphasis on product service. The modularization of maintenance has been explored rarely by previous researchers, despite its significant potential benefit. Existing modular design methods on life cycle do not sufficiently improve maintenance performance as a whole. In effort to remedy this, this article considers relevant maintenance issues at early stages of product development and presents a novel modular methodology based on the simultaneous consideration of maintenance and modularity characteristics. The proposed method first employs the design structure matrix to analyze the comprehensive correlation among components. Next, based on graph theory, initial modules with high cohesion and low coupling are generated. After that, a maintenance performance multi-objective model is established for further optimization to minimize maintenance costs, minimize differences in the maintenance cycle, and maximize system availability. To conclude, an improved strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2 is used for modular optimization. The complete methodology is demonstrated using a case study with a hydraulic press, where results reveal that the optimized modules can reduce maintenance cost under the premise of approximately constant modular performance.

Abstract:In the view of the mass customization several manufacturing systems including the modular production system are compared in this paper. The characteristics, design method and application foreground of the modular production system are analysed. The research results showed that the modular production system with higher productivity and better flexibility, lower investment and higher benefit is much suitable to the Chinese situation.

Abstract:Product platform modular architecture identification is the most critical process to support the incremental design of derivative instances. In order to solve the inflexibility in a single modular or scalable platform of complex mechatronics products, an integrated product modularisation scheme based on flow analysis, design structure matrix (DSM) and fuzzy clustering is proposed to compose a flexible platform. The definition of flexible platform is explained and internal mappings among functions, components and modules are set up. DSM for a kernel product is constructed by the flow analysis between the leaf components in design bill of material. An improved scaling by minimising a convex function algorithm is developed to transform the DSM to vectors in two-dimensional spaces, and the vectors are clustered using the traditional fuzzy c-means algorithm. Cluster centre components are selected to identify modular types with respective functional features. Thus, the internal relationships between components can be modelled with flow analysis-based DSM in a clear format, and the proposed DSM transformation and clustering algorithm identify the modular architecture for a flexible platform in a lower computational complexity. A numerical example and computational comparisons are also given to illustrate the proposed concept and the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Driven by the evolving customer requirements and the advancement of key technologies, design changes broadly exist in the lifecycle of the complex product. And as a popular engineering management strategy, the modularization strategy has been widely applied in the research and development process of complex products. However, most of the existing modularization methods do not consider the issue of design change management. Under this circumstance, the "avalanche effect" of the design change propagation might be magnified due to the inappropriate modular structure. Thus, to decrease the effect of the design change propagation, a novel modularization method of the complex product is proposed incorporating the modularity and the scope of design change propagation (SDCP). Firstly, considering the functional and physical relationship between components, the correlation matrix that is the adjacency matrix of the related weighted and directed network model is constructed. Secondly, the indexes of modularity and SDCP are defined based on the predetermined network model and correlation matrix, respectively. Thirdly, taking the modularity and the SDCP as the optimization objectives, a bi-objective optimization model is built for the modularization of the complex product, and then the model is solved by the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Finally, the modularization of the cab for a specific electronic sanitation vehicle is implemented as the case study to expound the utility and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:In terms of creating customized products rapidly, modularity is deemed to be an effective developmental strategy for handling product variety and intricacy. In order to develop reasonable modular product architecture with physically detachable modules, a new systematic and structured approach for product modularization based on axiomatic design and design structure matrix is proposed. The product is decomposed hierarchically into its functional, physical, and process domains using axiomatic design method. After transformation from design matrix to design structure matrix, the pertinence design structure matrices of design parameters describing function, structure, and manufacturing process are constructed. Besides, a manufacturing process similarity matrix of design parameters is established. Finally, a genetic algorithm combined with the minimal description length is employed to realize the modularization optimization after integration of the above matrices. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, an indoor air conditioner unit is presented as a demonstrative example.

Abstract:Regarding to the lack of integration between modular product family's designing and specific product's synthesizing, a closed-loop modular design approach based on collaboration and optimization is presented. Aimed at improving the efficiency of specific design and the evolution of family structure, the framework of process and techniques is rebuilt, and two important links and their techniques are researched, including collaborating among modules and optimizing of modular scheme. To apply specification of product family and realize collaboration among modules in synthesizing phase, a multi-view correlated model is used to express modular family, and an integrated model is given to combine it with the counterpart process model. Besides, collaborative model and its strategies are built up. To obtain information of conflict to resolve it and optimize family structure, an intelligent model is constructed, and a resolution mechanism for conflicts is devised. Finally, a prototype system of software was developed and applied in design of diesel engine, which proved the effectiveness of this approach to support collaborative modular design and scheme's optimization iteratively.

Abstract:The modular design can shrink production and management costs by quick procession of the specific needs of individual end users. This article presents a modular product design approach to product-oriented supply chain network. The proposed approach first builds a relationship matrix through the functional and structural interaction between the product components. Second, module suppliers are determined by the product module division via fuzzy clustering analysis of the relationship matrix. Third, for the determined suppliers, the supply chain costs and lead time are obtained, which can indicate the pros and cons of the supply network. Thus, proposed optimal product modules are verified through the supply network. A case on refrigerator parts modular is examined by the proposed method.
