Abstract:Along with the need for western economic development, the number of long tunnel projects which go through mountains is constantly on the rise. In the process of construction, various disaster-causing structures are frequently exposed, which leads to many geological disasters. The traditional idea is that the reverse fault is not easily developed for an underground river, which means that the tunnel elevation design is not considered adequately. When some tunnels cross the bottom of the river, the fractures near the fault between the underground river and the excavation space may be activated and then evolve into channels, causing serious water inrush accidents during construction and operation processes. Taking the Qiyueshan Tunnel site as an example, on the premise of the anatomy of the control mechanism of the reverse fault on the development of the underground river, based on the multiperiod typical structural traces of the tunnel and surface outcrop, it was found that stratifications, dip joints, transverse joints, and tension joints of good aperture grade are important control factors. The cut block easily loses its stability and provides space for karst development, while intermittent uplifting of regional structures provides hydrodynamic conditions for the development of the underground river, causing the hydraulic gradient to be inconsistent in the overall underground river. Finally, the rainwater dynamic monitoring and tracer connectivity are data that can be fully utilized to demonstrate that a reverse fracture can control the development of the underground river. The authors further considered the effect of the vertical zoning of the fault structure and the excavation disturbance, and, drawing on the experience of the relative location of the same site in the same field, put forward the suggestion that the construction of the follow-up tunnel in the study area should be slightly higher than the elevation of the underground river. The research results can provide useful reference for similar engineering problems in the future.

Abstract:To solve the construction ventilation problem of super long (length greater than 10000 m) tunnel passing through discrete lenticular gas bag tunnel under complex working conditions in carbonaceous shale stratum, relying on the construction of Banzhulin tunnel of the new Xuyong-Bijie Railway (Sichuan-Yunnan). Using the finite element analysis software, the flow field distribution of the tunnel return air flow in the case of simultaneous excavation of multiple working faces is simulated, and the formation position and influence range of the vortex area which is easy to form gas accumulation are analyzed. On this basis, the technical team developed the PLC uninterruptible self starting ventilation power supply control program. By comparing the changes in the time required for ventilation power supply failure before and after the adoption of this technology, and the comparison of the gas concentration in the return air flow within a relatively short time of the failure, it is proved that this technology reduces the fault response time to 15.74% of the original time, and can well avoid gas accumulation within the failure time, It provides some reference for similar engineering construction.

Abstract:China has become the largest scale and most diffi-cult technology of tunnel construction in the world .As the geological conditions of the deep long tunnels is dif-ficult to identify adequately before construction , major geological disasters such as water inrush and mud gush-ing in tunnel construction process are often encountered and the safety of construction and property are seriously affected .For the prevention and treatment for this major disaster , the 973 project "Catastrophe Mechanism and forecast controlling theory of water inrush and mud gushing in deep long tunnel" led by the Shandong Uni-versity has made important research progress in recent five years.It mainly includes the following aspects:the structure disaster of water inrush and mud gushing and its geological identification method , the ahead geolog-ical prediction methods and quantitative identification theory of disaster sources , the mechanism of catastroph-ic evolution , the characteristics of multiple information and comprehensive forecasting theory , the dynamic risk assessment and early warning theory and disaster control theory and collaborative governance technology .The re-search results have been successfully applied in the a-head forecast , disaster prevention and control theory and technology of water inrush and mud gushing disaster of ten typical deep tunnel projects in China .It greatly promotes the development of Chinese tunnel construc-tion business .
GROUNDWATER EFFECT ON LANDSLIDE AND ITS CONTROL ALONG SHANGYU-SANMEN HIGHWAY IN ZHEJIANG PROVINCE

Abstract:Most landslides are induced by groundwater activity; and the stability of landslide is directly related to the dynamical variation of groundwater. Due to the slope medium heterogeneity and the slope deformation discontinuity, it is a complex process for the groundwater table variation and the change of seepage system when landslides happen. The groundwater pipe seepage system is often developed in pebbly clay slopes in the long-term geological processes. It is important to prevent groundwater table rising and to keep the slope stability. According to the study on the landslide No.6 along Shangyu-Sanmen Highway, it is found that the groundwater seepage is inhomogeneous; and it flows tubularly generally. When the slope deforms and failure happens, the pipe seepage system will be damaged due to the discontinuity deformation of the slope, which causes the groundwater table to rise fast, even to overflow the ground surface. Therefore, the slope stability decreases and the failure of the slope speeds up. The underground drainage tunnel can stop the groundwater table rising effectively; especially, it can prevent the accumulation of the prior period precipitation in slope. So it is an effective engineering measure for landslide control and is worth to be applied.

Abstract:The number of excavated tunnels is increasing day by day, and the corresponding engineering scale is also getting increasing. Safe, efficient, and economically beneficial tunnel construction methods are indispensable in the process of crossing mountains and steep ridges in the southwest region. However, behind the improvement of transportation infrastructure in Southwest China is the support provided by the rapid development of blasting industry engineering technology in China. In the process of tunnel construction using the drilling and blasting method, in addition to blasting vibration disasters the phenomenon of overbreak and underbreak caused by blasting construction is a prominent problem. This phenomenon not only affects the safety and stability of the tunnel excavation but also seriously increases the construction cost. Based on a short mountain hard rock tunnel project in southwest China, this paper studies the effect of blasting construction on the blasting vibration of adjacent structures and the influence of tunnel contour forming quality. Through the monitoring and analysis of in situ blasting vibration, the Sadowski formula is used to study the attenuation law of blasting vibration velocity in different tunnel sites, which provides a theoretical basis for tunnel blasting vibration control. This article compares the use of overbreak and underbreak value with the traditional method to determine the degree of overbreak and underbreak. It introduces the analysis of contour section fractal dimension value and uses fractal theory in the Python image processing module to accurately and quantitatively describe the problems of tunnel overbreak and underbreak. The feasibility and accuracy of this method have been verified, by combining the total station and 3D laser scanner results of overbreak and underbreak measurements of the Brenner Base Tunnel and a short hard rock tunnel in a mountainous area of southwestern China. The blasting scheme was optimized from the aspects of cut hole form, detonator interval time, and peripheral hole charge structure, and the rationality of the optimized scheme was verified according to the on-site blasting experiments. It has a profound influence on strengthening the protection of adjacent tunnel structures and improving the economic benefit of mountain highway projects.

Abstract:Unfavourable geological disasters, such as water inrush and gushing mud, are often encountered during tunnel construction in karst areas. Whenever a large-scale water and mud inrush hazard occurs during excavation, it could cause great economic loss and, even, casualties. This paper presents a case study of water inrush hazard and treatment of large-section filled karst conduits during the construction of the running tunnel of Guiyang Rail Transit Line 1. Various causes of water and mud inrush are systematically analysed. Through the comparison and analysis of various solutions to treat the karst conduits, an innovative scenario for the treatment of water and mud inrush in tunnels constructed in karst areas is proposed. A discharge channel comprising drainage shafts and connecting passages is constructed, so that confined karst water can flow towards the ground surface by itself. Compared with common treatment methods, this has many features, including: not changing the original groundwater system, a short construction period, low cost and environment-friendly characteristics. Therefore, this case history can be used as a reference for the treatment of water and mud inrush in similar situations.

Abstract:Abstract Tunnel leakage is a common disaster in operating highway tunnel, causing many adverse effects on tunnel stability, cave facilities, traffic safety and the environment. Based on the causes and hazards of operating highway tunnel leakage, the tunnel leakage is divided into four types : construction joints leakage, lining crack leakage, fracture and cavity behind the lining leakage, concrete lining damage leakage. And the related crucial techniques and schemes were proposed. The achievements have been widely applied in Kaiyuan tunnel successfully, which offers a reference for similar tunnels.

Abstract:The construction of expressway tunnels in karst areas faces many challenges under complex geological conditions. It is of great scientific and engineering significance to study the deformation and failure laws of tunnels and surfaces. Taking the Qilinguan tunnel of the Hubei Expressway as an example, the deformation and failure laws of the tunnel are analyzed when the tunnel passes through the complex karst area. The composition of karst water and surrounding rock was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and XRD, and the compression-shear failure model of tunnels in karst areas was proposed according to the regional hydrological and geological conditions. It was found that the thickness of the protective layer and the water pressure were the main factors affecting the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock in this area, and the treatment scheme of this project was put forward accordingly. The geological characteristics of karst areas were explored by advanced geological prediction and advanced geological drilling. The primary support is provided by a steel arch and advanced small pipe grouting. The composite lining is composed of shotcrete as the primary support and molded concrete as the secondary lining. The primary support structure of the flexible support system is adopted in the design to give full play to the bearing capacity of the surrounding rock. After the support measures were adopted, the trend of settlement change gradually slowed down, indicating that the support measures were effective.

Abstract:This paper presents tunnel construction in caved karst strata base on the metro subway project between Maanshan Park station and Liantangnan station (Ma-Lian section) of Guangzhou metro line No. 9. The karst is highly developed with 98 karst caves along the tunnel route. The soil in the tunnel zone mainly consists of soft residual deposit, sand and slightly weathered limestone, which are unstable during construction. Complicated ground conditions were encountered during tunnel excavation, such as upper-soft-lower-hard ground, sand layer and caved karst. Geological risks including sink holes, water or stone ingress, and damage to constructed tunnels and the shield may occur during tunneling in the project of Ma-Lian section. Construction problems may be encountered during tunneling excavation, such as caved karst treatment and tunneling in complicated ground. Recommended solutions and modifications are proposed to solve the above problems.

Abstract:In this study, we systematically studied the occurrence regularity of in situ stress in the Pingdingshan mine. The critical criterion model of coal-rock destabilization was established based on the theoretical framework of fracture mechanics. Furthermore, we analyzed the coupling destabilization mechanism of in situ stress and gas and studied the influence of the variation between original rock stress and mining-induced stress on the critical criterion. Through field experiments and applications, we established a three-dimensional gas drainage technology system for areas with a large mining height and long work face. Based on our research, a demonstration project was developed for deep mine dynamic disaster control. The technical system included the arrangement and optimization of pre-drainage holes along the coal seam, technology, and optimization of gas drainage through the bottom drainage tunnel and upper corner, gas drainage technology through sieve tubes, and a two plugging with one injection under pressure sealing technology. The implementation of the demonstration project effectively reduced the gas content and pressure of the coal seam in the deep mine, and the project increased the critical strength of the instability and failure of coal and rock.

Abstract:Sudden water inrush disasters in long, deeply buried tunnels in karst regions not only seriously threaten the safety of tunnel engineering structures but are also geological disasters that are difficult to prevent and control. To achieve efficient and rapid treatment of water inrush disasters in tunnels by in-depth analysis of the causal mechanism of sudden water inrush in a long, deeply buried tunnel, an efficient treatment countermeasure, grouting plugging materials, and control measures of slurry leakage are developed. The results show that faults and fractured evaporite solution breccia are highly water permeable, and the excavation of a tunnel disrupts the groundwater flow direction. Gravity causes groundwater to gather in the weakest part of the tunnel, causing a water inrush disaster. To prevent a tunnel water inrush disaster, the countermeasure treatment of pretreatment with plugging of the water inrush site, grouting pre-reinforcement, water inrush plugging, and local reinforcement is proposed. Plugging materials suitable for the different characteristics of water inrush have been developed. These materials have a good effect on the narrowing and plugging of water inrush points. Shallow plugging techniques are proposed for the phenomenon of slurry leakage in the treatment process of water inrush disasters. Field displacement monitoring and similar engineering applications verify the effectiveness of the treatment countermeasures and grouting materials. This work provides a reference for the treatment of tunnel water inrush disasters.
Blasting Control Technology for Shallow Large Span Tunnel under -Passing Buildings and Monitoring Analysis of Blasting

Abstract:Research purposes: The blasting vibration velocity was monitored and the monitoring data was analyzed for blasting the tunnel of the connecting line of the Kiaochow Bay Undersea Tunnel under-passing the building group in order to ensure the structure safety of the building group on the ground,and summary was also made on the blasting control technology for providing the preference to the similar projects. Research conclusions: The practice of construction showed the blasting control technology of advanced small pilot tunnel and sequential excavation used for the construction of shallow large span tunnel under-passing the building group was feasible to protect the safety of building group on the ground.The blasting monitored data showed that the largest blasting vibration velocity and main vibration frequency were in the allowable range,and the blasting parameters were reasonable.Application of the triple composite cutting method could improve the blasting efficiency,control the maximum charge per interval,reduce the blasting vibration velocity and benefit the protection of the buildings on the ground.

Abstract:The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is currently the longest high-altitude highway tunnel. In order to ensure the safe operation of the tunnel, the SES software is used to investigate the wind speed laws in the tunnel, and the tunnel is divided into 16 disaster prevention sections based on the shaft and critical wind speed. The principles of disaster prevention and rescue of Tianshan Shengli Highway Tunnel are given, and the emergency treatment process of tunnel disaster prevention and rescue is given. The disaster prevention and rescue plan of Tianshan Shengli Tunnel from fire occurrence, personnel and vehicle evacuation, and fire treatment are discussed in detail.
The Prevention and Control Mechanism of Rockburst Hazards and Its Application in the Construction of a Deeply Buried Tunnel

Abstract:Rockburst hazards induced by high geostress are particularly prominent during the construction of underground engineering. Prevention and control of rockburst is still a global challenge in the field of geotechnical engineering, which is of great significance. Based on the tunnel group of the Jinping II hydropower station of China, this paper analyzed the mechanical principle of support in the process of construction, and discussed in detail the active release and passive support by numerical simulation and field application. The results show that as two active measures, stress relieve holes and advanced stress relief blasting can release the energy of the microseismic source and transfer the high stress to the deeper surrounding rock, make the surface rock wall with a relatively low stress act as a protective barrier. Their stress release rate is about 12% and 33% in this project, respectively. In term of passive measure, the combined rapid support, which is mainly composed of water swelling anchor and nano-admixture shotcrete, is also an effective way to prevent and control the rockburst under high geostress.

Abstract:Abstract In order to solve such problems as ground subsidence, water and mud bursting and shield machine foundering in subway construction which are caused by water-rich karst geological conditions, complete technological process is established to detect and treat karst in urban areas. The occurrence of natural electric field frequency selection method and groundwater determine groundwater occurrence vector that karst and fault fracture zone, and make use of the grouting technology of karst fracture with the treatment. The construction of Yingwanzhen Stationon Changsha Metro Line No. 4 provesthe favorable effect of the detection technology and treatment measures, which provides experience and reference for the construction of Changsha subway and underground engineeringin other cities with water-rich karst areas.

Abstract:This study focuses on the Tianshengqiao Tunnel on the Linshuang Expressway in Lincang City, Yunnan Province, China. By combining the transient electromagnetic method, and geological radar geophysical exploration methods, joint fissures and water abundance in the surrounding rock of the tunnel were predicted. Simultaneously, combined with engineering disasters, such as water inrush and seepage in the surrounding rock during engineering practice, a numerical calculation model for the grouting reinforcement of granite mixed-rock tunnels considering the construction process was established using finite element software. The results indicated that the joint fissures in the tunnel were well-developed and exhibited a disorderly trend, showing an open shape. Accompanied by high humidity in the excavated rock mass, the overall water outflow is mainly as strands, with a large amount of water outflow, especially at the arch crown or left arch waist. The difference in the settlement values of the surrounding rocks at different depths within the grouting circle of the tunnel was relatively small, whereas that outside the grouting circle was significant. The larger the scope of the tunnel grouting circle, the smaller the overall deformation of the surrounding rock after the closure of the tunnel support structure.

Abstract:Geological hazards, particularly water inrush, pose frequent challenges in tunnel constructions within karst regions. Drawing from the engineering experiences in addressing multiple large-scale water inrush hazards in the Dejiang tunnel, a combined method of field investigation and theoretical analysis was employed for qualitative and quantitative analyses of water inrush mechanisms. The regional geological investigation highlighted the formation of strong and weak aquifers due to alternating weak limestone and mudstone in the synclinal strata, creating favorable conditions for large-scale karst conduit. Atmospheric precipitation water connects karst cavities through groundwater-eroded karst conduit, establishing a recharge system for water inrush hazards. Three empirical formulas are adopted to investigate the influence of rainfall on the tunnel's actual water inflow. Importantly, it was found that considering only the influence of rainfall or surface water cannot reasonably predict the inflow in this area. The disaster's primary causes are attributed to the heavy rainfall, karst conduit, underground river, and weak strata, which have contributed to the persistent nature of water inrush events. The principle of "drainage and blockage" was used to address the issue of water inrush. Proposed remediation strategies during construction, including the innovative membrane bag high-pressure grouting, have proved to be effective in addressing the connected karst conduits. The drainage and blockage effects were achieved by installing drainage pipes during the grouting reinforcement process. Finally, the water pressure-resistant structure was employed to enhance the stiffness of the lining. As validated by monitoring data, the measures serve as crucial methods to guarantee the safety of tunnel structures, effectively prevent water inrush and amplify the ecological benefits of water-rich areas.
