Abstract:Objective: To discuss the effect that chromatic lights with different wavelengths has on the growth and development of eyeballs, and to analyze the role of PRE cells in the transmission of light signals in animal models. Methods: Healthy guinea pigs two weeks of age and weighing 100 - 150 g were used as animal models. 36 guinea pigs were randomly divided into four groups. Each of 3 groups was treated with red, yellow or blue light and one group was the control. After four weeks, the axial length of the eyes was measured for all groups. mRNA expression of TGF-β in retinal nerves and RPE by ISH were also bested. Results:The axial length of the eye in young guinea pigs treated with red light was significantly longer than that of the control group. The results of ISH showed that every layer in the retina expressed TGF-β, and the amount of the mRNA expression and TGF-β in the red group was greater than for the other groups. Conclusion: Axial length in the growth of the eyeball is a complex process controlled by many factors. The role that RPE cells have in this growth is unknown. However, it is a possible that there is a correlation between the growth of the eyeball and RPE cells that secrete different amounts of growth factors after being exposed to chromatic light with different wavelengths.
