Abstract:Objective To seek a more sensitive method to detect the micrometastatic cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity of patients with colorectal cancer. Methods Micrometastatic cancer cells in peritoneal cavity lavage from patients with colorectal cancer were detected with CEA mRNA RT PCR and immunohistochemical assay using anti CEA monoclonal antibody. Results The rate of positive detection by CEA mRNA RT PCR and immunohistochemical assay was 33 3% and 18 1%, respectively ( P 0 05). The rate of positive detection by CEA mRNA RT PCR was significantly correlated to macroscopic peritoneal dissemination, invasion of serosa, lymphatic metastasis, liver metastasis and circumferential involvement ( P 0 05). However, the rate of positive detection by immunohistochemical assay was only correlated to macroscopic dissemination and liver metastasis. [WT5”HZ]Conclusions[WT5”BZ] CEA mRNA RT PCR is more sensitive and specific than immunohistochemical assay in detecting the intraperitoneal micrometastatic cancer cells. It is helpful for earlier diagnosis of colorectal caner because it can greatly promote the rate of positive detection of latent peritoneal dissemination by the tumor.
