Abstract:In recent years, the planning idea of denser road networks and smaller blocks has received particular interest from planners and researchers. However, what is the impact of road network density on the efficiency of automobile traffic? Does a denser road network operate better? To address these questions, we develop an analytical approach taking the influence of intersection delay into account in this research. It is proved that there exists an optimal road network density that maximizes the average travel speed and travel production simultaneously under a given vehicle accumulation. When determining the reasonable road network density, the optimal density under peak-hour vehicle accumulation can be an important reference but not the final choice. If the peak-hour traffic fluctuates acutely, a denser road network should be considered for providing higher reliability. If the peak period is quite short, a sparser road network may be a better choice for providing higher travel speed as well as higher travel production during off-peak periods.

Abstract:Optimization of road network is the most important foundation of sustainable transportation systems. This paper puts forward a bi-level optimization model of urban road network based on transport efficiency. The system integrates conventional four-step transport planning models with the multi-vehicle user equilibrium problem as a lower-level model, and considers restrictions of construction cost, pollution cost and energy consumption. The model to minimize the generalized transport cost is solved with combined genetic simulated annealing algorithm. The application results show that the model not only meets the transport demands, but also implements the environment protection objective.

Abstract:A multi-objective bi-level programming model for highway network layout optimization is proposed through involving the concept of accessibility, aiming to improve the traditional single-objective, mobility-oriented approach. The upper-level model consists of two objective functions: maximizing the highway network accessibility and minimizing the traffic load, taking account of the restrictions of construction budget. The lower-level model is the user equilibrium (UE) problem in combination with the traditional four-step transportation planning model. In order to reflect the trade-offs between the objectives of upper model, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on Pareto optimal theory is proposed and programmed. The model and algorithm presented in this paper are applied in the Beibu Bay Area highway network planning, and proved to be a useful tool for making the final decision.

Abstract:In order to alleviate the road network jam,a balanced control method was proposed for the road network state.The road intersection saturation degree was chosen as the traffic state index,a bi-level programming optimization model was built for the balanced control of the road network traffic state to minimize the maximal road network saturation degree.This optimization model was solved by the genetic algorithm to optimize the traffic signal cycle and its green-red split.The balanced control was improved by consideration of the delay index,traffic state,and the relative importance of each intersection.The numerical simulation results showed that the proposed method can effectively alleviate the traffic jam in the critical region.

Abstract:The invention discloses a road network passing efficiency change rate calculation method facing a traffic manager. The method comprises the steps of: selecting and calculating a road network average travel speed and road network transportation efficiency in unit time; carrying out grouped processing the average travel speed and the road network transportation efficiency according to the number of road network running vehicles, and determining a mapping relation of both the average travel speed and the road network transportation efficiency with the road network running vehicle number; defining a road network passing efficiency grouping comprehensive change rate and calculating a weight value; calculating the road network passing efficiency comprehensive change rate before and after implementing a control scheme according to the averaged travel speed, the road network transportation efficiency and an index weight, and performing contrastive analysis on the change of the passing efficiency. According to the invention, the defect that the influence of the alternating quantity cannot be eliminated in the original calculation of the road network passing efficiency change rate is overcome, comprehensive comparison and evaluation of the urban road traffic road network passing efficiency are facilitated, the potential of the policy and measures is excavated deeply, and the data support and decision basis for improving the traffic management level and the road network passing efficiency are provided.

In this paper, transport efficiency is taken as the bridge to connect the building expenditure of road network, plus efficacy satisfying transport demands and negative efficacy of environment pollution and re source consuming. Abstract:The study referred to in this paper focused on the problem of bus lane infrastructure design in a given road network. The main goal was to seek optimal planning (bus lane infrastructure layout) and operational strategies (such as bus frequency) in an integrated manner. The decision process involved three parties: the infrastructure planner who designed bus lane infrastructure from a public perspective, transit enterprises that operated buses on the given infrastructure from a business perspective, and travelers who determined their own routes from an individual perspective. The problem was formulated as a trilevel mathematical program, with each level corresponding to one party in the system. A heuristic solution algorithm combining a genetic algorithm and simulated annealing was developed to solve the proposed model efficiently. A case study based on a real-world road network in Beijing was implemented to test the efficiency and applicability of the proposed modeling and computing methods.

Abstract:The problem of designing route guidance strategies for highway networks via on-route recommendation of variable message signs（VMS） was considered.A generic problem formulation was presented in the format of an optimal on-off control problem whose control action is the switching of VMS.The cell transmission model was then employed to perform network dynamics and a genetic algorithm-based problem solving approach was given.The simulation shows that the strategy with optimal VMS control trajectories can make better use of the highway capability and reduce regional congestion,especially in case the traffic network has unbalanced demand.The total time spent（TTS） of the network can be improved up to 32.39%.

Abstract:In the classical continuous network design problem, the optimal capacity enhancements are determined by minimizing the total system cost under a budget constraint, while taking into account the route choice behavior of network users. Generally the equilibrium origin–destination travel costs for some origin–destination (O–D) pairs may be increased after implementing these optimal capacity enhancements, leading to positive or negative results for network users. Therefore, the equity issue about the benefit gained from the network design problem is raised. In this paper, we examine the benefit distribution among the network users and the resulting equity associated with the continuous network design problem in terms of the change of equilibrium O–D travel costs. Bilevel programming models that incorporate the equity constraint are proposed for the continuous network design problem. A penalty function approach by embodying a simulated annealing method is used to test the models for a network example.

Abstract:Traffic flow on road network has a character of disequilibrium under the road network structure, traffic flow distribution and so on. In order to quantify its imbalance, taking section importance as the index, the model for road network equilibrium analysis is proposed based on the Gini coefficient. First, considering the road network structure, traffic flow distribution and the influence between sections, the section importance measurement based on space-time influence and space-time distribution is constructed to reflect the critical level of sections in the road network. Second, the road network equilibrium is discussed through Gini coefficient and Lorenz curve. Finally, the proposed model is applied in a subset of Beijing’s road network, and the results show that the model is simple and flexible to evaluate road network equilibrium in different dimensions. It has great significance for mastering the distribution law of traffic flow, optimizing road network structure, adjusting traffic capacity allocation and improving the efficiency of road network resources.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the city in Hohhot, new road has increased year by year. The full use of road resources will be achieved and the traffic congestion in future will be prevented by the traffic organization optimization of new road intersection. In this paper, through the investigation on new road intersection in Hohhot, the characteristics of new road intersection are conducted, and the existing problems are pointed out, and then some corresponding improvement measures are put forward. Take the intersection of Wuliying road in Xilinguole South road, one of new trunk roads, as an example to construct the intersection simulation model by using VISSIM software, and then compare and analysis the traffic evaluation parameters before and after the implementation of related measures. The simulation results show that through the reasonable optimization measures, the level of service of the intersection and the utilization rate of road resources can be improved to a certain extent, which will contribute to the prevention of traffic congestion in the future.

Abstract:The traditional algorithm on intersection design separates spatial design (geometric design), temporal design (signalization) and evaluation of the design result. This paper presents a new combined algorithm for road intersection design, aiming at solving the problems of traditional one. Software based on this algorithm is developed by the author. The program is based on Visual C++, ObjectARX and database technology. Case study shows that the calculate result using the proposed algorithm meet the demand of optimizing design for a given intersection. This means that the algorithm can be applied into the practical engineering and satisfactory results can be obtained.

Abstract:System theory and intelligent system methods are increasingly introduced into the study of social economy system. This study applied the fuzzy theory to the arterial road project evaluation in Yangtze River Delta. It is an important stage in transportation planning. Highroad quality is a composite of various attributes, among them many separated attributes always lack of pertinency and comparability. This characteristic introduces the obstacles for respondent in project assessment. In order to overcome the issue, we invited trapezoidal fuzzy theory in obtaining criteria weights and AHP in ranking.
