Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of birth weight on learning achievement and neurodevelopment, reveal the relativity between learning achievement and neurodevelopment. METHOD Design was prospective cohort study. The IQ and DQ as well as school achievement of 203 LBW and 71 full-term infants living in Shanghai, born in 1983, were observed from birth to sixteen years, Gesell Development Diagnosis; WPPSI test and WISC-R were used to assess the neurodevelopment. The school achievements of study participants were assessed using standard exam scores at age 16. RESULT There were significant differences in the mean IQ/DQ and scores on school achievement over all visits: NBW PMT SGA( P 0.01),and also there were significant differences among three groups(BW 2 500g, 2 000 - 2 500g,and 2000g) (P 0.01), which would last to adolescence. There was significant correlation between IQ/DQ and school achievements at 16 years(P 0.02). Regressive analysis showed that with the increasing 10% of birth weight, the IQ/DQ scores will increase 2.50% - 3.60% for SGA and 2.30% -4.40% for PMT; the mean sum scores of school standard exam will increase 4.73% and 3.90%. CONCLUSIONS It is very obvious that Bw of LBW can affect children's neurodevelopment and learning abilities. The bigger the birth weight was,the higher the IQ/DQ and the mean sum scores of school standard exam were.
