Abstract:Contradictory assessments of the significance of Althusser's life and thought are mirrored by his own uneasy and inconsistent attempts at self-understanding in the posthumous autobiographies Les Faits and L'Avenir dure longtemps . In fact Althusser was concerned with the problems of reading and meaning throughout his career. In Lire le Capital he attributes to Marx a practice of reading which involves exploring the blanks or lapses of a precursor text. This establishes the reader as an active participant in the meaning of a text, while also making reading a potentially endless process. Althusser's writings on psychoanalysis suggest an analogy to this relationship between text and reader in the relationship between analyst and analys and, as each offers the other a glimpse of a truth which neither actually possesses. The disturbed textuality of Althusser's later writing enacts this simultaneous promise and disturbance of meaning. In particular, in his autobiographical writings he attempts a self-reading which aims to achieve a level of understanding capable of excluding all other perspectives, but which remains open to later rereading and revision; moreover, the precariousness of meaning emerges in Althusser's later thought and writing as a source of hope that everything is not set out in advance, and that the worst is not certain however probable it might seem.

Abstract:No figure among the western Marxist theoreticians has loomed larger in the postwar period than Louis Althusser. A rebel against the Catholic tradition in which he was raised, Althusser studied philosophy and later joined both the faculty of the Ecole normal superieure and the French Communist Party in 1948. Viewed as a "structuralist Marxist," Althusser was as much admired for his independence of intellect as he was for his rigorous defense of Marx. The latter was best illustrated in "For Marx" (1965), and "Reading Capital" (1968). These works, along with "Lenin and Philosophy "(1971) had an enormous influence on the New Left of the 1960s and continues to influence modern Marxist scholarship. This classic work, which to date has sold more than 30,000 copies, covers the range of Louis Althusser's interests and contributions in philosophy, economics, psychology, aesthetics, and political science. Marx, in Althusser's view, was subject in his earlier writings to the ruling ideology of his day. Thus for Althusser, the interpretation of Marx involves a repudiation of all efforts to draw from Marx's early writings a view of Marx as a "humanist" and "historicist." Lenin and Philosophy also contains Althusser's essay on Lenin's study of Hegel; a major essay on the state, "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses," "Freud and Lacan: A letter on Art in Reply to Andre Daspre," and "Cremonini, Painter of the Abstract." The book opens with a 1968 interview in which Althusser discusses his personal, political, and intellectual history."

Abstract:In 1950,A Long wrote two articles to oppose to the conceptive expression of political contents, the argument that any person except workers,peasants and soldiers can not be expressed in literary works. He also oppose to apotheosis of positive characters and uglifying negative characters in literary works. Soon these two articles was animadverted fiercely by People's Daily.The main purpose of the repudiators is through animadverting on A Long in the field of literature and arts,to purge the influence of Hu Feng' s thoughts of literature and arts,sequentially to promote the series assertions of literature in the new era. In the two unpublished anti-criticism articles then,A Long's persisting in the proposition"Arts equal to Politics",thinking of"thorough describe private life"problem,became objectively the adherence and in- vestigation to the realism theories under the particular environment.A Long's courage and insight of theo- ries came exactly from the study and research of Marxism-Leninism literature and arts theories sincerely but not dogmaticly.

Abstract:Althusser acquires a special status in Marxist theory of ideology.He refuses to take ideology as materialistic consciousness in its sense of commodity fetishism,and is opposed to Gramsci's interpretation of ideology as cultural hegemony.In his theory of ideology,Altrusser maintains a special position that ideology is not ideas or consciousness that is determined by social and material existence,rather than materialist existence and practices.In this paper,Altrusser's theory is to be understood from three points:ideology is the reproduction of the social conditions of reproduction;ideology is state apparatus in its material sense;and ideological query is but the practice of authority in its material form.Althusser has made an outstanding contribution to the theory of ideology,but there is a problem beyond solution in his theory:the conceptual difference between the general ideology and specific ideology is still restricted in the bourgeois mode of thinking,the mode of interpretation to the relation between the ideology and politics is not dialectical.In this sense,Althusser's theory is legacy of vague and ambiguous kind.

Abstract:Chen Yinque,the great historian,wrote a series of prefaces to the works by other scholars and epilogues with reference to old documents,in which he reflected on his academic experience and research methods,and expressed his feelings about life and worldly affairs.These writings are not only based on Chen's interpretation and affirmation of the significance of the academic researches with his sympathy of understanding,but also serve as a way to comfort his friends,which can be seen as important materials to reveal Chen Yinque's academic approaches and spirits as well as his attitude towards life.This article discusses Chen's research methods in history studies by analyzing dozens of his prefaces and epilogues collected in the Anthology of Chen Yinque,and also attempts to interpret Chen Yinque both as a person and as a scholar in an alternative way.

Abstract:Through a formal analysis of this seminar work of Lu Xun, the author observes that the narrative and dramatic motivation of Ah Q-The Real Story is an intense yet futile search for a proper name and identity within a system of naming and identity-formation as the system, by default, repels the identity-seeking and "homecoming" effort of the sign in question ("Ah Q"). Based on this observation, the author goes on to argue that the origin of Chinese modernism lies in a highly political awareness of one's loss of cultural belonging and thus one's collective alienation from the matrix of tradition and indeed existence. Departing from conventional reading of this work, often anchored in sociopolitical interpretations of class, nation, and group psychology centered on the "critique of national characteristics" discourse, this article maintains that the true ambition and literary energy of Lu Xun's masterpiece can only be fully grasped when one confronts this epic cultural-political struggle to regain a cultural system's power and legitimation to name one's own existence and define one's own value.

Abstract:As a scholar in late-Ming and early-Qing Dynasty,Wang fuzhi not only paid attention to the study of Confucian classics, but also made a lot of comments on LAOZI. In the academic system of Wang Fuzhi,on the one hand,he made criticism of LAOZI:he thought that LAOZI theories of light ceremony,judo,self-cultivation are not conducive to the national and individual progress:on the other hand,Wang Fuzhi gradually affirmed the practical significance of LAOZI“static for manic monarch”and“retire after winning merit”and other thoughts. Abstract:In a famous article written in 1928 when the Left-wing writers of the Sun and Creation Societies were criticising Lu Xun for being behind the times, Qian Xingcun (A Ying) asserted that the age of Ah Q was already past. Fifty years later Chen Baichen's dramatization of Ah Q Zhengzhuan , which was staged in 1981 as part of the Lu Xun centenary celebrations, ends with the narrator declaring that although Ah Q had no women it was not true that he would have no descendants, because his line would continue for generations to come. It is, of course, possible to reconcile these two apparently contradictory statements. Qian Xingcun was referring to the fact that the peasant masses were becoming politically organized, having played an important role in the revolutionary movements of those years. He did not claim that people like Ah Q no longer existed. Chen Baichen, on the other hand, was referring to the Ah Q mentality which still lives on in people's minds, long after Ah Q himself has been executed. He did not see this mentality as the dominant force in society. Nevertheless there have been striking changes of attitude towards Ah Q in recent years. Since the end of the Cultural Revolution it has been generally recognized that the Ah Q mentality is still a force in China which is holding back attempts at modernization and that many other aspects of the Chinese traditional society and culture which Lu Xun criticized in his stories and essays have still not been eradicated 45 years after his death.

This book concludes with an afterword by the always thoughtful Jeffrey Olick where he talks of his intellectual and personal companions. Siobhan Kattago, who teaches political philosophy at Tallin University, has put together an excellent set of essays, all of which are full of interest. This book itself is highly companionable and a pleasure to read.

Abstract:By means of textual research,the paper probes into the innermost world of a Shanghai Catholic scholar Xu Zuanzeng(1627-1698).The paper argues that Xu represented the second generation of one of the most well-known Christian families in Shanghai,that in comparison with his ancestry,there was not too much contradiction between Chinese and Western cultures in his heart,that as a result of not adhering to one religion,his life-guide was made up of different values and believes,and that the Catholic influence in his inner world could be analyzed in the deep context which was composed of his life,his family,his works,and his relations with others.

Abstract:There are two direct reasons why modern Chinese scholars come to academic consciousness and self-discipline: firstly,political subjects of traditional Confucianists have suffered enough due to historical setbacks so the latent idea of renouncing the world becomes the most important requirement of life in the reality;secondly,due to the great change of means of production and system of distribution in modern China,all places for ancient hermits to retreat are destroyed and so are their former homes.Although Qian's lamenting on the late death and a painful life cannot be easily discerned in his academic study,it forms the most distinct characteristics of his poetry in his old-style poems since he expressed it so directly.

Abstract:Mr.Wang Weijiang's attempt to make a grand narration of relationship between Communist Party of China and academic study and the rise and fall of intellectuals in the merely on the basis of memoirs is strained.His dismissal of Mr.Guo Moruo's academic findings in the 1950s as substandard is far from the fact.His categorization of Mr.Guo's theory of the slavery system in the Western Zhou Period into school of Feudalism in the Western Zhou Period is obviously a defect for he based his judgment solely on the ground of Mr.Guo's adherence to Maoism.Considering his tolerance to the non-CPC intellectuals,he appears to be lack of sympathy or understanding for Mr.Guo.
