Abstract:Objective:To investigate long-term effects of vasectomy on reproductive hormone levels, prostate volume, erectile function and psychological state. Methods:A total of 1045 healthy men aged 40 and above were interviewed with an unified structure questionnaires, among which,73 cases had ever received vasectomy over 20 years.A nested case-control study was conducted in accordance with the 1:1 paired principles, and 73 healthy men with no experience of vasectomy were selected as the control group.Thereafter, respondents were evaluated using Beck Depression Inventory(BDI)-II,the international index of erectile function(IIEF-5)score and the international prostate symptom score(IPSS).Their serum reproductive hormone levels and prostate volume were measured and calculated, respectively. Results:No significant differences in reproductive hormone levels,BDI-II and IIEF-5scores were found between the vasectomy group and the control group(Pall0.05).However,the prostate volume(P0.01)and IPSS score(P0.05)in the vasectomy group were less than those of the control group. Conclusion:Obvious change of erectile function, mental status and reproductive hormone levels are not found post vasectomy over 20 years. In addition, vasectomy may play a role in suppressing prostate hyperplasia and improving lower urinary tract symptom.
