Abstract:Holonic Manufacturing System (HMS) is a promising way to meet the ever-increasing needs for robustness to disturbances, adaptability and flexibility to rapid change, and efficient use of available resources on the factory floor of modem -manufacturing enterprises. To achieve the desired capabilities of HMS, a completely new approach of software design is highly required. A suitable metaphor for HMS design is the emerging IEC61499 standard, which defines the Function Block (FB) construct for building modular, reusable, distributed applications. In the present work, the holonic concepts in HMS were illustrated. The reference models in the IEC61499 context were presented, along with the benefits from IEC61499. A FB-based design methodology was proposed to systematize the task of HMS design. An application example of holonic control system design using IEC61499 was described. When properly applied, the FB approach can substantially reduce the time and cost of system engineering, while enhancing the autonomy, cooperation and openness of HMS.

Abstract:Design patterns have received a lot of attention lately, especially in the object-oriented community. According to IEC61499. Function Block (FB) is considerably similar to object. To reduce the time and cost of system engineering, a suitable design pattern based on the generic Model-View-Controller (MVC) framework and ideas set out in IEC61499, which can be used in the design of Holonic Manufacturing System (HMS), is presented. The differences between the proposed framework and the classical MVC framework are identified. The corresponding engineering methodology that takes maximum advantage of the highly visual nature of the proposed IEC61499-based MVC framework is addressed. The holonic control system design of a simple assembly station is described as an illustrative example, highlighting the advantages of the proposed design pattern. which shows promise for improving manufacturing system performance while facilitating the development process.

Abstract:In the last few years, lot of work has been done in order to ensure enterprise applications interoperability; however, proposed solutions focus mainly on enterprise processes. Indeed, throughout product lifecycle coordination needs to be established between reality in the physical world (physical view) and the virtual world handled by manufacturing information systems (informational view). This paper presents a holonic approach that enables synchronisation of both physical and informational views. A model driven approach for interoperability is proposed to ensure interoperability of holon based models with other applications in the enterprise.

Abstract:Holonic manufacturing systems is one of the important contents in next generation manufacturing systems-intelligent manufacturing systems. A study of process planning architecture and implementation in Holonic manufacturing systems was performed, a concurrent model of process planning was presented to integrate the information in computer-aided design and production scheduling systems. Holonic architecture of process planning composed of four types of Holons was established based on the concurrent integrated model, the functional mechanism of architecture was executed in terms of attribute of automation and cooperation in Holon, three types of cooperation models were discussed in architecture, it will provide a new approach for further study on next generation manufacturing systems.

Abstract:Nowadays, enterprises are confronted to growing needs for traceability, product genealogy and product life cycle management. To meet those needs, the enterprise and applications in the enterprise environment have to manage flows of information that relate to flows of material and that are managed in shop floor level. Nevertheless, throughout product lifecycle coordination needs to be established between reality in the physical world (physical view) and the virtual world handled by manufacturing information systems (informational view). This paper presents the "Holon" modelling concept as a means for the synchronisation of both physical view and informational views. Afterwards, we show how the concept of holon can play a major role in ensuring interoperability in the enterprise context.

Abstract:Holonic manufacturing is a highly distributed control paradigm based on a kind of autonomous and cooperative entity called “holon”. It can both guarantee performance stability, predictability and global optimization of hierarchical control, and provide flexibility and adaptability of heterarchical control. A virtual enterprise (VE) is a temporary coalition of distributed, autonomous and cooperative member enterprises (MEs) and its organizational architecture has typical features of holonic systems. In this paper, we present some studies on the application of the holonic manufacturing paradigm to virtual enterprise control. A holonic framework for virtual enterprises is first proposed and control mechanisms of virtual enterprises under this framework are then discussed. Virtual enterprise control considered in this paper can provide flexibility and adaptability of heterarchical control, reacting to changes and disturbances agilely. It also preserves stability of hierarchical control, having the ability to guarantee stability, predictability and global optimization of the system performance.

Abstract:As Systems of Systems evolve into increasingly complex networks, harnessing their collective potential becomes paramount. Traditional SoS engineering approaches lack the necessary programmability to develop third party SoS level behaviors. To address this challenge, we propose a software defined approach to enable flexible and adaptive programming of SoS. We introduce the Holon Programming Model, a software-defined framework designed to meet these needs. The Holon Programming Model empowers developers to design and orchestrate complex system behaviors effectively, as illustrated in our disaster management scenario. This research outlines the Holon Programming Model theoretical underpinnings and practical applications, with the aim of driving further exploration and advancement in the field of software defined SoS

Abstract:Human is the most dynamic factor in a manufacturing system; no matter how advanced intelligent manufacturing would be, it should meet humans’ needs and serve for a better life. Based on the theory of human–cyber–physical systems (HCPS) in the context of intelligent manufacturing, the concept of human-centered intelligent manufacturing (HCIM) is firstly proposed in this work. HCIM is discussed from the aspects of background, connotation, human factors, technical system, and practical applications. It clarifies that HCIM not only reflects an important perspective, but also represents one of the significant research directions of intelligent manufacturing. On this basis, several suggestions are recommended from policy decision-making, enterprise development, and scientific research levels, including linking HCIM with relevant national strategies, regarding HCIM as a key concept for enterprises’ development, and enhancing research on human factors/ergonomics in intelligent manufacturing systems. It’s expected that this work can provide a reference to promote HCIM development and applications in China.
Model and Simulation of Carrier Collaboration Transportation Based on Holon

Abstract:This paper addresses the carrier collaboration transportation with limited sharing of carrier's request information. From the perspective of control structure, a holon-based multi-level control structure framework is proposed for exchanging tasks between carriers. From the perspective of modeling, the system model based on this control structure is described by using unified modeling language (UML)and discrete event system specification (DEVS). DEVS analysis shows that the system model is the coupling closure, which can convert a multi-level complex carrier collaboration relationship into a local carrier relationship in an alliance. This can simplify the carrier collaboration research. Finally, a simulation platform for carrier collaboration transportation based on holon is designed and developed. A simulation example shows the validity of the collaboration.

Abstract:Manufacturers face challenges in competitiveness due to rapid technological innovations and shortages of skilled workers. A human-centric adaptive manufacturing approach is presented to address these challenges through coevolution of human skills and system capabilities via human-machine collaboration and on-site upskilling. The level of adaptation is conceptualized according to challenges, enablers, and human roles. Optimization models are used to adapt the design, configuration, and operation of systems around human skills, and a deep reinforcement learning model is employed to learn the optimal policy to integrate the adaptation and upskilling activities. The methodology shows good performance when assessed in an industrial-scale use case.

Abstract:Human-centricity, a core value of Industry 5.0, places humans in the center of production. It leads to the prioritization of human needs, spanning from health and safety to self-actualization and personal growth. The concept of the Human Digital Twin (HDT) is proposed as a critical method to realize human-centricity in smart manufacturing systems towards Industry 5.0. HDTs are digital representations of humans, aiming to change the practice of human-system integration by coupling humans' characteristics directly to the system design and its performance. In-depth analysis, critical insights, and application guidelines of HDT are essential to realize the concept of Industry 5.0 in practice and evolve the smart manufacturing paradigm in modern factories. However, the investigation on the development of HDT to evolve humans' roles and develop humans to their full potential is limited to date. Recent studies are rarely geared towards designing a standardized framework and architecture of HDT for diverse real-world applications. Thus, this work aims to close this research gap by carrying out a comprehensive survey on HDT in the context of Industry 5.0, summarizing the ongoing evolution, and proposing a proper connotation of HDT, before discussing the conceptual framework and system architecture of HDT and analyzing enabling technologies and industrial applications. This work provides guidance on possible avenues as well as challenges for the further development of HDT and its related concepts, allowing humans to reach their potential and accommodating their diverse needs in the futuristic smart manufacturing systems shaped by Industry 5.0.

Abstract:Intelligent manufacturing is a general concept that is under continuous development. It can be categorized into three basic paradigms: digital manufacturing, digital-networked manufacturing, and new-generation intelligent manufacturing. New-generation intelligent manufacturing represents an in-depth integration of new-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology and advanced manufacturing technology. It runs through every link in the full life-cycle of design, production, product, and service. The concept also relates to the optimization and integration of corresponding systems; the continuous improvement of enterprises’ product quality, performance, and service levels; and reduction in resources consumption. New-generation intelligent manufacturing acts as the core driving force of the new industrial revolution and will continue to be the main pathway for the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry in the decades to come. Human-cyber-physical systems (HCPSs) reveal the technological mechanisms of new-generation intelligent manufacturing and can effectively guide related theoretical research and engineering practice. Given the sequential development, cross interaction, and iterative upgrading characteristics of the three basic paradigms of intelligent manufacturing, a technology roadmap for “parallel promotion and integrated development” should be developed in order to drive forward the intelligent transformation of the manufacturing industry in China.

Abstract:This paper briefly describes the significance of studying the paradigms of intelligent manufacturing, and introduces the connotation and development process of intelligent manufacturing. By analyzing the characteristics of relevant paradigms of intelligent manufacturing, three basic paradigms of intelligent manufacturing are summarized: digital manufacturing, digital and networked manufacturing (“Internet Plus” manufacturing or smart manufacturing), and digital, networked, and intelligentized manufacturing (new-generation intelligent manufacturing). The connotation and characteristics of the three basic paradigms are expounded. China should start with the digital manufacturing, thus to consolidate the foundation for the development of intelligent manufacturing. In the next stage, China should focus on the development of “Internet Plus” manufacturing, and promote these three basic paradigms in parallel. The new-generation intelligent manufacturing will fundamentally lead and advance the fourth industrial revolution, and bring a historic opportunity for China’s manufacturing to achieve leapfrog development.
Ontology in Holonic Cooperative Manufacturing: A Solution to Share and Exchange the Knowledge

Abstract:Cooperative manufacturing is a new trend in industry, which depends on the existence of a collaborative robot. A collaborative robot is usually a light-weight robot which is capable of operating safely with a human co-worker in a shared work environment. During this cooperation, a vast amount of information is exchanged between the collaborative robot and the worker. This information constructs the cooperative manufacturing knowledge, which describes the production components and environment. In this research, we propose a holonic control solution, which uses the ontology concept to represent the cooperative manufacturing knowledge. The holonic control solution is implemented as an autonomous multi-agent system that exchanges the manufacturing knowledge based on an ontology model. Ultimately, the research illustrates and implements the proposed solution over a cooperative assembly scenario, which involves two workers and one collaborative robot, whom cooperate together to assemble a customized product.

Abstract:The current trends in personalized products drive the paradigms of production systems toward autonomous networked manufacturing systems. This article proposes an ontology-based holonic event-driven architecture for implementing loosely coupled, holonic, autonomous distributed systems. The event-driven architecture (EDA) enables the services provided by different organizations and their suborganizations to be autonomously configured and integrated, while ensuring that the predefined organizational event access rules are compulsorily followed. This is realized by organizing the event services in a holonic manager and modeling the knowledge of services via the ontology developed in this study. The ontology model and the corresponding autonomous configuration mechanism are introduced. We developed a demonstration case to elaborate our approach and implemented a testbed using Java-based technology for testing the effectiveness, efficiency, scalability, and reliability of the proposed approach. Note to Practitioners-The ever-changing customer demands, the volatile market, and the trend of mass personalization require manufacturing systems to be smart in the event of uncertainties. To this end, information sharing in the supply chain is a key factor. However, there are several barriers in implementing a cross-organizational information system, including security, access privileges, and system interoperability. To lift these barriers, this article proposes an ontology model and a hierarchical EDA. Compared with conventional architectures, our approach facilitates the management of access privileges, integration of interorganizational information systems, and their interoperation. Moreover, our approach is competitive compared with the conventional service-oriented architecture in terms of both scalability and reliability of the system. Before the proposed approach can be practically applied, the ontology model needs to be further extended, and the event registration and message exchange protocol need to be standardized.

Abstract:The on-demand supply mode of cloud manufacturing is significant in enlivening the manufacturing resources over a wide range. However, problems in coupling and contradiction exist among individuation, cost and response time in the on-demand supply of manufacturing cloud service, thus decreasing the efficiency and effectiveness of cloud manufacturing. To decouple this contradiction problem and help users rapidly obtain individuation services at low cost, this paper proposes a two-dimensional (time and space dimensions) optimization mechanism and method for manufacturing cloud service. In the mechanism layer, the user demand decoupling point principle, which is formulated using the customer order decoupling point in traditional physical products, is proposed for describing the optimization direction; and the on-demand supply mode of manufacturing cloud service is divided into four sub-modes, i.e., provide-to-demand, compose-to-demand, engineer -to-demand and research-to-demand; then, a two-dimensional optimization model is established for describing the optimization mechanism among individuation, cost and response time. In the method layer, the decision-making process model for positioning and optimizing UDDP is studied to support the time dimension optimization of moving UDDP backward; and a recursive mapping model of the service topological structure is proposed for supporting the space dimension optimization of the service topological structure. Finally, the proposed model and method are applied to a cloud manufacturing service platform for the mold industry. Two case studies are presented for demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of this two-dimensional optimization approach.

Abstract:Intelligent manufacturing is a systematic engineering and technological innovation that propels the transformation and upgrading of China’s manufacturing industry, enhancing industrial competitiveness. It is a pivotal element in strengthening the manufacturing sector of China. The comprehensive and profound advancement of intelligent manufacturing necessitates adherence to ideological innovation, requiring the formulation of a scientifically grounded development strategy from its philosophical roots. This paper, based on the phenomenological reductionism and ontological perspective method, starts from the perspective of the philosophy of technology, integrates systemic dialectical logical reasoning, investigates and identifies the “hard problems” of human– machine collaborative technology in intelligent manufacturing, and insightfully explores its philosophical essence from the standpoint of the philosophy of scientific epistemology. The research findings indicate that explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge are commonly present in manufacturing technology activities. However, the long-standing technological development has overlooked the significance of tacit knowledge and has made an unreasonable assumption about the existence of “rational people” in human subjects, neglecting their crucial role in manufacturing systems. Therefore, this paper, through ontological reflection, proposes a Cartesian intelligent manufacturing technology development path based on the Internet of Things, Internet of Contents & Knowledge, and Internet of Bodies. Building upon this foundation, it establishes a Heideggerian intelligent manufacturing system architecture grounded in behavior-oriented, deictic representations, and embodied embedding. Through this traceable causal analysis, it constructs a three-stage progressive development knowledge paradigm for resolving the “hard problems” of human – machine collaborative technology. This paradigm is characterized by data-driven, functional representation, and embodied integration. To efficiently promote the development of the new-generation intelligent manufacturing, a knowledge engineering classification assessment system can be established. The application of theoretical cognitive models can drive the resolution of technological challenges and the formulation of industry support policies. Establishing a multi-faceted application-oriented intelligent manufacturing public service platform strengthens knowledge circulation and integrated application.
