Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the distribution and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus for the guidance of rational use of antibiotics. METHODS Surveillance data on pathogens isolated from Southwest Hospital at Chongqing from Jan 2006 to Dec 2008 were analyzed retrospectively. Antibiotics sensitivity tests were performed by Kirby-Bauer (K-B). RESULTS A total of 1009 S. aureus strains were isolated from sputum (50.6%), pus (20.4%), wound secretion (9.8%), blood (7.3%), ascites (1.9%), stool(1.8%), eyes secretions (1.3%) and others (6.9%). The most seriously distributed departments were neurolsurgery, burn, ICU, respiratory, hepatology, orthopedics, and pediatrics, respectively. Among them, 527(52.2%) were found to be MRSA, and 90.0% of these MRSA strains were found resistant to ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, clindamycin, gatifloxacin, gentamicin and levofloxacin. However, 482 were found to be MSSA which were sensitive to the majority of antibiotics, except for penicillin and erythromycin. No strains were found resistant to vancomycin. CONCLUSIONS The resistance rate of MRSA is very serious, indicating that it is necessary to use antibiotics according to the sensitiveity tests results.
