Abstract:Objective To investigate the expressio n of signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) in human gastr ic cancer and to evaluate the relationship between protein level and clinicopath ological parameters. Methods Western blot was used to me asure the expression of STAT3 protein in 42 cases of gastric carcinoma tissue, metastatic lymph nodes and adjacent normal mucosa.Results STAT3 protein level was abnormally increased in gastric cancer tissue as com pared with adjacent normal gastric mucosa (P0.05). The expression of STAT3 was higher in poor-differentiated cancers than that in well-differentiated cancers (P0.05). Protein level of STAT3 in the sta ge Ⅲ and stage Ⅳ tumors was higher than that in stage Ⅰ and stage Ⅱ tumors ( P0.05). No statistic difference of STAT3 expression was found in different tumor size or serosa invasion (P0.05). Metastatic lymph nodes overexpressed STAT3 protein. Conclusion Overexpression of STAT3 may play an important role in the development of human gastric cancer.
