Abstract:Objective[WT5”BZ] To evaluate the effect of resection on the survival of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. [WT5”HZ]Methods[WT5”BZ] Four hundred and twenty-one patients with advanced pancreatic cancer admitted from 1970 to 2000 were retrospectively reviewed and their prognosis was compared. Of them, 96 patients underwent Whipple′s operation or regional pancreatoduodenectomy. [WT5”HZ]Results[WT5”BZ] The resectability rates were 9 5%, 16 6% and 28 2% in the 1970 s, 1980 s and 1990s respectively. The 1-,3- and 5-year survival rates were 50%, 25% and 0 in the 1970 s; 57 1%, 28 5% and 9 5% in the 1980 s; 61 6%, 27 7% and 11 1% in the 1990 s. The size of the tumor and the involvement of lymph node and nerve plexus were associated with the outcome of patients. [WT5”HZ]Conclusion[WT5”BZ] Aggressive surgical management could prolong the survival and improv the life quality of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. [WT5”HZ]
