ANTIHYPERTENSIVE EFFECTS AND SAFETY OF BETAXOLOLIN CHINESE HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS

Abstract:Objective: To assess the antihypertensive effects and safety of betaxolol in Chinese patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. Methods: 76 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were investigated. 63 patients of them were randomized (doubleblind) to receive either betaxolol (n=31,10～20 mg once daily) or bisoprolol (n=32,5～10 mg once daily) for 4 weeks to observe the change of clinic blood pressure(BP) and side effects. In the remaining patients(n=13),ambulatory blood pressure monitoring(ABPM) was performed by randomized singleblind method. Results: Blood pressure control can cover over 24 hours in betaxolol group. In the fourth week, normotension was achieved 80.6% of patients given betaxolol. The average dose for response is 10 mg. The trough to peak ratios for systolic and diastolic blood pressures by betaxolol were all more than 50%. There are no side effects within 4 weeks. Conclusion: Oncedaily dosing of betaxolol(10～20 mg) is effective and safe to Chinese hypertensive patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension within a 4week treatment period.
