Abstract:The hazardous components of environmental concern contained in all kinds of waste battery were analyzed.The handling technique and technological process of recovering and reusing the waste battery including waste lead acid battery,Zn/Mn battery,Cd/Ni battery,Ni metal hydride battery and lithium ion battery both here and abroad were reported.The merit and demerit of different handling technology was also stated.The development trend of reusing technology for waste Zn/Mn battery,Ni metal hydride battery and lithium ion battery was introduced.Finally,potentially promising counter measures to handle the battery pollution were put forward from the managing system,operational process,recycle institution and research of reusing technology.

Abstract:The recycling of spent batteries is an important concern in resource conservation and environmental protection, while it is facing challenges such as insufficient recycling channels, high costs, and technical difficulties. To address these issues, a review of the recycling of spent batteries, emphasizing the importance and potential value of recycling is conducted. Besides, the recycling policies and strategies implemented in representative countries are summarized, providing legal and policy support for the recycling industry. Moreover, a comprehensive classification and comparison of recycling technologies identify the characteristics and current status of different approaches. The integrated recycling technology provides a better recycling performance with zero-pollution recycling of spent battery. Biorecycling technology is expected to gain a broad development prospect in the future owing to the superiority of energy-saving and environmental protection, high recycling efficiency, via microbial degradation, enzymatic degradation, etc. Consequently, as for the existing recycling challenges of waste batteries, developing new recycling technology and perfecting its recycling system is an indispensable guarantee for the sustainable development of waste battery. Meanwhile, theoretical support is offered for the recycling of spent batteries.

Abstract:With the rapid promotion of the number of China’s new energy vehicles in promotion and application, it is of great significance to ensure the recycling of the waste power batteries. It can not only effectively reduce the safety and environmental protection risks brought by the waste power battery, but also alleviate China’s dependence on rare metals such as cobalt and lithium, which has been widely concerned by the industry. In this paper, the cost analysis model of waste power battery treated by hydrometallurgical process is established, and the economy of recycling of ternary material battery and LFP battery is compared and analysed, and the overall economy of the whole power battery recycling industry is analysed, and the relevant conclusions are obtained, and the relevant suggestions of recycling of power battery are put forward according to the analysis results, to provide reference for industry and related management departments.

Abstract:The rapidly growing battery industry and the corresponding potential environmental pollution make recycling waste nickel (Ni)-based batteries essential. This review summarized the sources and characteristics of valuable metals in Ni-based batteries. The various treatment processes of waste Ni-based batteries, including acid leaching, bio-leaching, and pyrometallurgy, were compared and discussed. The different pretreatment processes were compared because they influence the recovery of valuable metals. Moreover, the crucial mechanism of hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy recovery processes was summarized in detail, and the challenges faced by various pretreatment and recovery processes were also pointed out. A comprehensive treatment method was proposed combining hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy processes. Finally, the properties of valuable metals products obtained by different treatment processes were discussed and analyzed, providing useful advice for the completely harmless treatment of waste Ni-based batteries.

Abstract:Ever-growing global energy needs and environmental damage have motivated the pursuit of sustainable energy sources and storage technologies. As attractive energy storage technologies to integrate renewable resources and electric transportation, rechargeable batteries, including lead-acid, nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium, and lithium-ion batteries, are undergoing unprecedented rapid development. However, the intrinsic toxicity of rechargeable batteries arising from their use of toxic materials is potentially environmentally hazardous. Additionally, the massive production of batteries consumes numerous resources, some of which are scarce. It is therefore essential to consider battery recycling when developing battery systems. Here, we provide a systematic overview of rechargeable battery recycling from a sustainable perspective. We present state-of-the-art fundamental research and industrial technologies related to battery recycling, with a special focus on lithium-ion battery recycling. We introduce the concept of sustainability through a discussion of the life-cycle assessment of battery recycling. Considering the forecasted trend of a massive number of retired power batteries from the forecasted surge in electric vehicles, their repurposing and reuse are considered from economic, technical, environmental, and market perspectives. New opportunities, challenges, and future prospects for battery recycling are then summarized. A reinterpreted 3R strategy entailing redesign, reuse, and recycling is recommended for the future development of battery recycling.

Abstract:As a result of the wide application of lead-acid batteries to be the power supplies for vehicles, their demand has rapidly increased owing to their low cost and high availability. Accordingly, the amount of waste lead-acid batteries has increased to new levels; therefore, the pollution caused by the waste lead-acid batteries has also significantly increased. Because lead is toxic to the environment and to humans, recycling and management of waste lead-acid batteries has become a significant challenge and is capturing much public attention. Various innovations have been recently proposed to recycle lead and lead-containing compounds from waste lead-acid batteries. In this mini-review article, different recycling techniques for waste lead-acid batteries are highlighted. The present state of such recycling and its future perspectives are also discussed. We hope that this mini-review can provide useful information on recovery and recycling of lead from waste lead-acid batteries in the field of solid waste treatment.

Abstract:With the rise of global warming, people have turned to electricity as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as a popular energy conservation solution. However, as the use of LIBs increases, the recycling industry is facing significant wastemanagement challenges. The decreasing content of precious metals in LIBs has led to a decline in recycling income. This article explores the application of LIBs in new energy vehicles, and evaluates the challenges faced by the recycling industry and provides suggestions for overcoming them. Currently, lithium iron phosphate, lithium nickel cobalt manganese and lithium nickel cobalt aluminum batteries have been used in new energy vehicle power batteries. The main recycle methods include direct recycling, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy. The article then suggests that improved recycling lines that use artificial intelligence and renew manufacturing standards may be beneficial solutions. By addressing these challenges, the problems associated with LIB recycling may be transformed into opportunities for the future.

Abstract:LIBs is a kind of energy storage device, which has the advantages of high energy density, no memory effect, good safety performance, and many cycles; It is widely used in many scientific and technological fields at home and abroad. With the large-scale increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries, the amount of scrap also increased. In order to better realize resource recovery, energy conservation and emission reduction, it is necessary to study a series of new technologies for waste battery recovery; This review mainly introduces the recovery process of the waste cathode material (LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2) of the ternary battery, and carries out the resource recovery. The content describes the three major links of the recycling process. The first link introduces the pretreatment of waste ternary batteries. The second link analyzes the current methods of recycling the cathode materials of waste ternary batteries. After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each method, the process of wet recycling is introduced in detail. It is also the most commonly used way of recycling waste batteries at this stage. The last link describes the regeneration process of cathode materials.

Abstract:Heavy metals such as Co, Li, Mn, Ni, etc. and organic compounds enrich spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). These batteries seriously threaten human health and the environment. Meanwhile, with the development of new energy vehicles, the shortage of valuable metal resources which are used as raw materials for power batteries is becoming a serious problem. Using proper methods to recycle spent LIBs can both save resources and protect the environment. Pyrometallury is a kind of recycling method that is operated under high temperature with the aim of recovering useful metals after pre-treatment and organic binder removal with the characteristic of high temperature and it is easy to operate. Hydrometallurgy is characterized by high recovery efficiency, low reaction energy consumption, and high reaction rate, and is widely used in the recycling process of spent LIBs. During biometallurgy, valuable metals in the spent LIBs are extracted by microbial metabolism or microbial acid production processes. Since the drive for green and low secondary pollution, biometallurgy as well as solvent extraction and the electrochemical method have earned more attention during recent years. This mini-review analyzes the relationship between the emergence of new energy vehicles and the recycling status of spent LIBs. Meanwhile, this paper also consists of detailed treatment and recycling methods for LIBs and provides a summary of the management regulations of current waste for LIBs. What is more, the main challenges and further prospects in terms of LIBs management in China are analyzed.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were used extensively in people's lives, especially with the vigorous promotion of new energy vehicles, which led to the generation of a large number of waste LIBs. In consideration of the enormous quantity, environmental risk, and resource properties, many countries have issued a series of laws and regulations to manage waste LIBs and developed a lot of recycling technologies. As the biggest producer of batteries in the world, China has also taken necessary measures to deal with this situation. This paper presents the latest regulations of waste LIBs in China and reviews the recycling strategies of waste LIBs, especially physical recycling methods. Based on the analysis of the current management status of waste LIBs in China and the recycling technologies, some management suggestions, and a complete closed-circuit recycling process including cascade utilization and resource recovery were put forward. A rough economic evaluation of the process was also conducted to demonstrate the economic feasibility of the proposed process. The purpose of this paper is to provide some valuable references for decision-making bodies in the improvement of waste lithium-ion battery management and to provide an environmentally friendly and industrial feasible recycling process for reference.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the new energy vehicle industry, the number of power battery decommissioning is increasing year by year. The recycling of power batteries is of great significance for protecting the ecological environment, improving the efficiency of resource utilization, and ensuring the sustainable and healthy development of the new energy automobile industry. In this study, the chemical compositions of power batteries were introduced, the technical path and development status of the echelon utilization of decommissioned power batteries were discussed, and the specific steps and challenges of regenerative utilization of decommissioned power batteries were described in detail from two aspects of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy. Combined with the relevant research results, the main methods of the direct regeneration of positive electrode materials were analyzed. Finally, the main development direction and related suggestions for the resource utilization of decommissioned power batteries were put forward.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, under the double pressure of energy exhaustion and environmental deterioration, the development of electric vehicles has become the major development trend of the automotive industry in the future. This paper discusses the problem of abandoned batteries caused by the limited life of a large number of batteries with the prosperity of new energy vehicle industry. This paper lists and analyzes the different characteristics of batteries commonly used by three new energy vehicles in the market :(1) lead-acid batteries will not leak in the use process due to tight sealing, but their use cycle is very short. (2) The production of nickel metal hydride battery is relatively mature, its production cost is low, and compared with lithium electronic battery is safer. (3) Lithium-ion batteries are made of non-toxic materials, which makes them known as “green batteries”. However, they are expensive to make and have poor compatibility with other batteries. Because discarded batteries pose a threat to human health and environmental sustainability, lithium-ion batteries may overheat and fire when exposed to high temperatures or when penetrated, releasing carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide that can be very harmful to human health. In addition, waste batteries will also cause water pollution and inhibit the growth and reproduction of aquatic organisms and other potential dangers. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle it efficiently. This paper then introduces the advantages of three recycling methods: step utilization and recovery, ultrasonic recovery and sodium ion battery. These recycling methods can maximize the reuse efficiency of waste batteries. This paper expects to find a better way to recycle waste batteries to solve the potential problems of improper disposal of waste batteries and reduce the environmental hazards of waste batteries.

Abstract:Competitive costs and eco-friendliness have prompted solid waste-based recycling to become a hot topic of sustainability for energy storage devices. The closed-loop model, which combines the efficient recovery of solid waste with the preparation of energy storage materials, is considered as a tremendous potential sustainable development strategy. However, large-scale issues including environmental hazards, valuable ingredients, quantity and distribution remain due to the complex nature of solid waste properties, resulting in delays in its industrial applications. This review provides a systematic overview of the regeneration of various solid wastes into energy storage materials from the point of view of processing techniques and value-varying approaches. First, a summary of the solid waste classification and disposal procedures is provided, and the pros and cons of the disposal procedures are analyzed considering the resources and the environment. Moreover, the reactivation process of the resource cycle is detailed according to the regeneration of different battery energy storage materials (lithium-ion battery, sodium-ion battery, lithium-sulfur battery, supercapacitor, fuel cell, etc.), including waste recycling and high-value material regenerated processes. In addition, a comprehensive evaluation of various types of energy storage batteries is carried out from the perspectives of economy, environment, technological difficulty, application status, and development potential, to provide a feasible reference for the future regeneration of suitable energy storage batteries. Finally, the main challenges of recycling solid wastes into energy storage materials are summarized as "two Highs and four Lows".

Abstract:Retired lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide-type lithium-ion power batteries (NCMs) pose considerable challenges for recycling due to high contamination levels and low efficiency in the recovery process. Despite these complexities, NCMs contain significant amounts of precious metals, making them a substantial untapped resource with immense recycling potential. This study optimizes heat treatment conditions for NCMs focusing on cathode materials and the current collector. The optimal parameters of 280 °C, 2 h, and 60 s were identified through systematic discharge, disassembly, crushing, and sorting processes. Precious metal recovery rates exceeded 90%. Thermogravimetric-thermal differential analysis at 400 °C revealed the complete removal of bonding agents between the electrode materials. A comprehensive cost analysis was conducted using a mathematical model for retired power batteries revenue, scrutinizing the consumption costs and benefits of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and physical recovery processes for NCMs. The input–output efficiencies were 6.56%, 28%, and 23%, respectively. This study supports the viability of physical recycling for a future mechanical–chemical combination approach to reduce production costs and environmental impacts. The proposed method holds economic, environmental, and industrial development value and provides a guide for sustainable recycling practices in the lithium-ion battery industry.

Abstract:The rapid growth, demand, and production of batteries to meet various emerging applications, such as electric vehicles and energy storage systems, will result in waste and disposal problems in the next few years as these batteries reach end-of-life. Battery reuse and recycling are becoming urgent worldwide priorities to protect the environment and address the increasing need for critical metals. As a review article, this paper reveals the current global battery market and global battery waste status from which the main battery chemistry types and their management, including reuse and recycling status, are discussed. This review then presents details of the challenges, opportunities, and arguments on battery second-life and recycling. The recent research and industrial activities in the battery reuse domain are summarized to provide a landscape picture and valuable insight into battery reuse and recycling for industries, scientific research, and waste management.

Abstract:Acidic zinc‐carbon dry batteries have been widely used in life because of their low cost. However, a great quantity of used batteries is discarded as refuse, which not only causes the waste of resources but also leads to environmental contamination. To reuse the spent batteries on a large scale, here we propose a simple, effective and sustainable strategy to turn them into MnO/ZnO/C composites. Only after a conventional leaching treatment followed by pyrolysis, the rust cathode materials can be reduced to MnO/ZnO/C. When serving as a rechargeable zinc‐ion battery cathode, such electrode provides a maximum reversible capacity (~ 362 mAh g ‐1 MnO ) and prominent rate capability ( 191 mAh g ‐1 MnO at a high current rate of 1.20 A g ‐1 ). Furthermore, it is found that ZnO gradually dissolves in the electrolyte with the increase of discharge cycles, replenishing the Zn 2+ content in the electrolyte and thus ensuring excellent cycle stability (98.02% after 500 cycles), while the device also possesses remarkable energy density (336.37 Wh kg ‐1 ), low self‐discharge rate, and can efficiently power a LED panel. Our paradigm work offers an economical, scalable and facile route to convert the useless zinc‐carbon batteries wastes into useful materials for aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries.

Abstract:It is of great economic, environmental and social benefit to discover harmless treatment and resource utilization options for spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which contain a large proportion of valuable metal elements (e.g., Li, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, and Al) and poisonous chemicals (e.g., lithium hexafluorophosphate and polyvinylidene fluoride). The present work summarized the leading technologies and hot issues in the disposal of spent LIBs from new energy vehicles. Moreover, development of the trend of innovative technologies for the recycling of spent LIBs is recommended.
