Abstract:It is an old topic to talk about Plato's aesthetics,but there can be new insights into it.As a matter of fact,as a philosopher well-known for his 'banishment of poets",Plato had chosen to become a poet like Homer as his goal of life.This can help us rediscover the value of his aesthetic theory.His transformation of political philosophy,in a sense,suggests the foundation of ethical aesthetics which is centered on his "theory of justice".The term "aesthetic issue of city of justice" also addresses the confusion in recognizing the logical determinacy of 'the ultimate good" as "beauty itself'.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore this issue for Chinese aesthetic study which is universally lack of real "problem awareness".

Abstract:This paper examines Socrates’ theory of the arts in the Gorgias and in the Republic. It shows how that theory changes, as the discussion takes focus first in relation to moderation, then to justice, where it is tied to the idea of a techne of rule, to notions of virtuous work and civic health, and to five levels of ‘art’ represented in the cave. It argues that both Socrates’ vision of a scientific and benevolent political art and Thrasymachus’ sophistic theory of tyrannical rule are undercut in the dialogue, the former by doubts concerning the epistemic closure it seems based on, the latter by the tyrant’s character, which impels him toward self-destructive government.

Abstract:The problem of Socrates is a sharp problem which puzzles Nietzsche all his life. In the center of The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche launches twofold attacks on Socrates, claiming that being the incarnation of "scientific spirit" and rationalism, he has not only murdered Greek tragedy and art, but also brought about great political disaster. Socrates sounds to be the spiritual originator of western "science" and "democracy." However, this image of Socrates differs from that in Plato who presents him as a mature philosopher after his turn to political philosophy. The mature Socrates has not casted art away, but merged poetry with philosophy in an appropriate way. And the knowledge claimed by Socrates is concerned with the most important human affairs, such as the order of the soul, the many and one of virtue, the best regime etc., and with a teleological color, different from what is called "science" or "knowledge" by Nietzsche. Indeed, Nietzsche's political accusation against Socrates is ironically drawing intellectuals' attention to the political and spiritual dilemma of their times. That he takes art superior over truth and proposes his construction of "great politics" is actually somewhat like Socrates to re-legislate for the value and existence of human beings.

Abstract:Cicero represents the efforts by the Roman philosophers who tried to create their own philosophy by means of re-reading Greek philosophy. The new Roman philosophy exhibits its own originality which differs from the Greek one and is more akin to modern philosophical thinking. Thus more attention should be directed to this much-neglected style of wisdom.In Hellenistic-Roman philosophies, one interesting phenomenon can be observed: many have passed over Plato and Aristotle and traced back to Socrates in order to re-find the ″orthodoxy″ of philosophy. Stoics did that, and so did the Academics. Cicero played his role in this line of Socratic-orthodoxy discovery. When Cicero claimed that Socrates was the first man who turned philosophy from heaven to the city, he was not just describing some ordinary ″philosophical turn″, rather, he was pointing out the real nature of philosophy: to be the reflection on politics and the moral good.The philosophy school that followed this orthodoxy, as Cicero believed, was the Academic philosophers who pursued ″probable truth″ rather than absolute truth.The former was attained through dialectic examination of opinions and thus belonged eventually in the domain of opinion, sufficient, however, to guide life, while the latter was not attainable and useless to life.Probable truth is the truth that has reasonable apology or justification. This wording reminds people of a forensic rhetoric. Actually, rhetoric politics is another part of the new feature of Roman philosophy founded by Cicero. Rhetoric aims at persuasion.Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato criticized rhetoric art fiercely because it did not resort to truth. Plato did have his own art of speaking, namely dialectics. But Cicero emphasized more on the public speech in the court and the senate, for it brought benefits for the commonwealth. Roman republican philosophers believed that philosophy must serve the real reforms in political life, rather than the mere theoretical perfection.The change of focus on probable truth and public rhetoric entails other profound changes in the philosophical thinking. For instance, Cicero re-ordered the Telos in favor of the life-form of practical statesmen, rather than that of speculative philosophers. Meanwhile, he stressed more on the internal relation between natural law and custom, avoiding the idealistic orientation in the justification of moral norms.Cicero’s contribution is significant, for since then both Greek idealistic philosophy and Roman rhetoric philosophy have constituted distinct and coexistent sub-traditions within the Western tradition of political philosophy.

Abstract:The Death of Socrates is an important event in the history of Western political philosophy. Plato has written a dialogue called Socratic Apology. There is a puzzle that anyone who has read Apology might have had from time to time. Why did Socrates not take many opportunities to compromise and so to avoid his tragedyWhy did he often challenge Athens, almost intentionally brought his own death There are, however, two ways of interpreting this event.To use Berlin’s famous analogy, one may either think Socrates’ destiny as a hedgehog’s tragedy, or think it a fox’ one. The former interpretation believes that because Socrates is too confident in insisting on an absolutist, simple and transcendent idea of value, his beliefs will be inevitably in violent conflict with the secular values of Athens’ city-state. Because Socrates thought himself fighting for the Truth, the city had to shut up him by death penalty. On the other hand, a fox will have his own kind of tragedy. The stableness of the state is based on the moral seriousness. A fox sophist is someone who is pluralistic, negative, and deconstructive. Socrates is exactly this kind of fox. Fox may be a good characteristic of a scholar, but a society must fend off this ironic spirit if it is going to maintain social solidarity. ″Philosophy″ may have two different meanings. However, the two may all become threats to politics. First, philosophy is often understood as metaphysics.Metaphysics is transcendental, and hence may threat mundane political life.On the other hand, philosophy may be regarded as ″critical spirit″,which means the spirit of fox. Its rule of morality is skeptical of everything, including metaphysics.This philosophy may threat politics more, as moral life is based on faiths. After Delphi Event, Socrates devoted all his energy into this kind of philosophical cause, criticizing other people and himself. There is one point to be stressed. We think that Plato and Socrates are basically of one mind.Plato is, unlike some modern scholars have suggested, someone who has lost his teacher’s critical spirit.If the two are of opposite minds, as those scholars have thought, why did Plato elaborates Socratic philosophy in detail and in a persuasive wayThe arguments for the enemy would lead to the jeopardy of one’s own philosophy. Our study suggests another conclusion.Socrates cannot be confined into either of these patterns.A more plausible possibility is that Socrates is both a fox and a hedgehog. The two mentalities do not conflict in Socrates, but reinforce each other. This leads to his powerful intellectual and moral caliber, and, unfortunately, leads to his death. Fortunately, Plato has realized the significance in this event.His masterful representation of Socrates has made Socratic tragedy an important foundation for the Western history of politics.

Abstract:Socrates' greatest intellectual contribution lies with his proposal of the "concept of kindness",which combines celestial laws with humanism.On the one hand,this elevates the kindness in human nature onto the supreme level of ontology among all beings in the world;on the other hand,it utilizes the moral ontology to bestow order and purposes on all these beings.As a result,Socrates could overcome the blindness of ancient Greek concept of fate and the external attributes of Logos.However,Shestov believes that the Socratic philosophy contains two types of confusion and substitution: using the idea of kindness or evil in human nature to confuse and substitute the good and bad in nature;using the concept of perfection to confuse and substitute the concept of actuality.The act of using Abstract concepts to substitute actual life turns philosophy into preaching;furthermore,Shestov proposes the double images of Socrates: Socrates as recorded by historians and the actual Socrates.

Abstract:Human's aesthetic individuality and its universal function of culture are the two subjects of classic German aesthetics. The logic contradiction and historical tension between the two and the insufficient study of the aesthetic individuality all have exerted deep influences on the Chinese aesthetics in the 20th century. The study of aesthetic individuality will be deepened with religion as the framework. In this sense, aesthetics becomes the instantaneous spiritual pleasure of man. Aesthetic feeling is material, specific and instantaneous, which defines that aesthetics is the starting point of human spiritual life and the typical representative of popular culture. Aesthetics is the most popular spiritual activity of humans and the study of it is the spiritual phenomenology of human feeling. This is the actual starting point of the study of contemporary basic theories of aesthetics. However, aesthetics is greatly overshadowed by science, religion and philosophy in the influences on human mind.

Abstract:This chapter studies the development and basic ideas of Chinese aesthetics by reviewing the history of aesthetic perspective from the Han Dynasty; the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties; the Tang Dynasty; the Five Dynasties; the Song and Yuan Dynasties; and the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The ancient Chinese artists pursued the artistic conception of beauty, namely, the integration of mind and objects, sentiments, and scenes, and the fusion of subjective emotions and objective landscape. Nevertheless, this conception overlooks the function of practice, the intermediary between mind and objects. Actually, there are three fundamental elements: emotion (first feeling) of aesthetic subjects; artistic conception sensed through the painting brush in practice (perception); poetry, books, songs, and paintings as artistic finished products (containing essence and sentiments). It is the combination, conformity, and harmonious co-existence of these three essentials (namely subject–practice–object) that constitute the art system aesthetics or design aesthetics.

Abstract:Although the ontological study of aesthetic education provides a unique thinking path for re-delimiting the academ-ic position and theoretic value of aesthetic research and the construction of aesthetic education in contemporary China, aes-thetic education as an important branch of aesthetics which is highly metaphysical puts emphasis on practice and its value is best seen in its effect on everyday life. Seen in this light, the ontological study of aesthetic education is still inadequate. We need to pursue our discussion from a fresh perspective. From this need arises the proposition of "the value of aesthetic edu-cation", a proposition that can deepen our understanding of "the way of the true man" and "the education of the true man" from the perspective of "the pleasures of the true man".

Abstract:Aesthetics is just defined as the definition of art after the influence of analytic philosophy. Aesthetics in narrow sense makes itself isolated from social life and art practice. In order to get rid of this state, some contemporary western aestheticians look back to Alexander Baumgarten and his original definition of aesthetics. According to Baumgarten, aesthetics should cover all of the aesthetic life. Some aestheticians even advocate it can be further regarded as the fundament of philosophy. This inclining of aesthetics in broad sense can be found in Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, which is very famous in the beginning of the modernization process of Chinese aesthetics. This comparative study between Cai Yuan-Pei and Baumgarten is not only helpful to re-understand Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, but also useful for Chinese aestheticians to find the direction of future aesthetics.

Abstract:The article tries to present Socrates' understanding of the task of philosophy step by step with reference to contemporary interpretations. Along the way, an inevitable obstacle is encountered, and that is the problem of the contemporary meanings of Socrates 'philosophy. Socrates did not leave a written trace behind, so we draw knowledge about his philosophy and life from the main testimonies, which are the writings of Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato and Aristotle. Given our acceptance and affection for certain testimonies, we are moving further and further away from the definition of historical Socrates. The paradox of this distancing, is shown in the fact that Socrates in this way in his mental heritage becomes closer to us as our contemporary. But what cannot be ignored is the fact that Socrates, with his philosophy, left an indelible mark in the development of the whole of philosophical thought and the determinants of modern culture as a whole. The transition from the question of nature to the question of human life, through the introduction of a method aimed at eliminating misconceptions and the possibility of determining the right direction for action, is what makes Socrates one of the most important philosophers and leaves him in today's view of the source of modern thought.

Abstract:Homonology is the starting point and the premise for all social science researches. The settlement of large numbers of important theoretical problems in the study of art and literature depends on the settlement of human beings’ problems. In the history of Western literary theories, atheistic existentialism, based on the existence of human beings, is applied to inquire into the problems of art and literature. Therefore, the unique homonological thinking in art and literature is thus formed, which has produced a sustained and profound influence on the construction of the concept of contemporary art and literature. In terms of homonological thinking, atheistic existentialism is opposed to traditional essentialism and the human essence before his existence the viewpoint of ontological homonology. It believes that the viewpoint reduces man to a ″such ″ being that his essential existence is logically covered. On the contrary, however, atheistic existentialism proposes that human existence precedes his essence, regarding man in the real meaning as a primitive and indefinable being against describing him in any epistemological or logical paradigms. It also pays full attention to man’s transcending being, and moreover makes human life possible by intellectually removing all transcendent yokes of human existence and by vigorously affirming the possibility of free choice. In brief, this Sartrean formula points to the fundamental freedom of man and his ability to create himself. In terms of art, existentialism lays particular emphasis on the relationship between art and man, holding that art decodes the truth of human existence, and real art is embodied in his life. It constructs an ideological system of homonology in art and literature with existence, truth, transcendence, and freedom as its core.In summary, existential homonology in art and literature has broadened our horizons and changed our past conception in art and literature. Firstly, it attaches importance to the link between art and (human) life, emphasizing the interpretation of artistic activities with life and elevating it to an ontological level, which is an ultimate of artistic being. We are thus provided with a fresh perspective of artistic nature, and the homonological spirit will become the guiding spirit in art and literature, while the ultimate, existence and exploration of human beings will be the sole subject of art and literature. Secondly, the existential homonology is opposed to traditional art and literature that takes art and literature as a form of knowledge, emphasizing their function of cognition, artistic truth, human existence, and individuality (of all men). In this connection, the foundation of artistic value is shifted from knowledge to existence. Thirdly, the existential homonology rewrites the beauty of traditional art and literature that is regarded as their determinant nature, emphasizing the truth as the nature of art. Therefore, according to the existential homonology, art and literature are no longer the symbol of beauty; instead, they are the home of truth.

Abstract:Aristotle, the first western formalist, was the beginner of the use of Entelechy which is a key member of the form meaning. Aristotle's idea of form could be divided into two parts, the aesthetic form (beauty was harmony) and the ontological form (hylomorphism). Thomas Aquinas summarized the form ideas of ancient Greek and Middle Ages, and made a systematic exposition on the three elements of aesthetics (integrity, proportion and splendor). Modern Neo Thomists Maritain and Gilson revived Aristotle's idea of form and proved systematically the whole world including art and beauty from the point of ontology (God).

Abstract:Art in general perception is something that transcends our notion of reality. In view of the earliest findings in Paleolithic sites, their abstract appearance and sometimes ceremonial context increased their status of a secret language. Even the first figurative cave paintings remained in a context of an encoded semantic whole. The highly symbolic value of art seemed invulnerable. It was just the claim for "mimesis" in Greek antiquity (Plato) that urged artists to "realistically" depict what can be seen-as to stay in track of eternal messages behind. This devaluated the artistic oeuvre to a purely imitating craft and had to overcome at once several inherent obstacles. First, that reality (the phenomenal world) is in general only a pale reflection of what lays behind (Platonic ideas) and second, that the human eye, unlike the human mind, cannot penetrate to more than ephemeral impressions. Moreover, it mixed up reality with what we are able to see (i.e. visual perception), thus supposing a pinpoint representation of the world by our senses. Aristotle was the first to qualify art as picturing more than we usually are meant to see, filling the gap between the sensual and the spiritual world. Aristotelian aesthetics includes concepts of reduction and selection of composition and emotion, thus a summarized view within any performance of poetics or painting. And it took centuries to close the gap between natural and aesthetic perception or art. Life sciences in the 20th century discovered the evolutionary basis of sensory perception as being highly biased and organized, concept as emotion-driven and thus, mentally equipped as well. This sets a new approach in our understanding of perception, art, and aesthetics as an ongoing communication in process on common bases. Art may cooperate or disagree, but never can cut the nexus with its perceptual prejudices and substrate.

Abstract:Abstract: The Chinese aesthetic vein can be divided into two sections: the theory of daotifrom the pre-Qin to SIKOGN Tu of the end of Tang Dynasty, and the theory of tidao sincethe Song Dynasty, between which ZHU Xi is found. His category of gewu laid thefoundation for the transition and made the "Thing" one of the focal points of the Chineseaesthetics. His category of hanyong also laid the foundation for the basic connotation ofaesthetic epistemology and deeply revealed the life force of artistic creation and appreciation.

Abstract:Aesthetic transcendence is a problem that the Chinese literary theory and aesthetics are facing in the 21th century.The peculiar nature of aesthetic transcendence lies in the realization of inner freedom in one's life.Cultural studies are only complement and improvement to the conception and methods of traditional literary studies,therefore can not take the place of aesthetic transcendence,but rather,takes it as its ultimate pursuit.Aesthetic transcendence is an organic unity between individuality and sociality in the sense of becoming,for which modern artistic activity like surrealism has provided a convincing evidence.The aesthetic can only transcend the reasonable,but can not transcend reason manifested in the protective forces of existence,thus realizing the organic unity between sensibility and reason through consciousness that transcends its temporary relief to itself,through individual consciousness that transcends universal consciousness,and through man's changing nature that transcends the nature of general freedom.

Abstract:First,this paper briefly analyzes the philosophical foundation of Satayana's aesthetic thought,that is,his opinion of naturalistic philosophy.Satayana's explanations of some basic aesthetic problems,taking the essence of aesthetics(aesthetic value,the definition of aesthetics),aesthetic analysis and artistic analysis for example,are also briefly introduced and originally commented.The paper believes that Satayana as a naturalistic aesthetician whose aesthetic thought incarnates a certain transitiveness of western aesthetics in around the twentieth century.On one hand,he still noticed some metaphysical problems such as the essence of aesthetics,seriously discussed the definition of aesthetics and developed his own viewpoint.On the other hand,starting from the specific standpoint of naturalism,Satayana interpreted some important problems of aesthetics and arts specifically,thoroughly and paradoxically sometimes.Satayana's academic thought is instructive for us,no matter his research methods or specific point of view.
