Abstract:The basic conception and the flow chart of the genetic algorithm was introduced, and the transformation of the job-shop scheduling problem to the gene code in the genetic algorithm was given. Several key points for realizing the genetic algorithm of job-shop problems were also explained. Finally, several simulation results obtained from the genetic algorithm were given, and a comparison with other algorithms as well as a brief summary were also given.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of various ways in solving Job-Shop scheduling problems, the mathematical model of Job-Shop problem is introduced. A kind of genetic algorithm is used to solve it in this paper. Firstly, the chromosomes are encoded, and the population size is premised for the optimized goal of Job-Shop problem, which are the keys of the method. Secondly, the fitness function is designed. After using selection, crossover and mutation operator, and then elitist strategy to prevent the premature convergence, a best or satisfactory scheduling path can be found. The executing results using the presented algorithms in certain project case are shown in the paper.

A comprehensive survey on such issue is presented, including encoding, improvement, comparison, property analysis, generalization, real application and scheduler development. Some further research directions are discussed.

Abstract:Job-shop scheduling problem is a strongly NP-hard problem.A simple and easy genetic algorithm is proposed to solve this problem.A decoding algorithm based on greedy insertion is adopted to insure the solutions of problem active schedules.Based on the several famous test examples of Muth and Thompson and the performance comparison with another better genetic algorithm at present,the experimental results show the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:Based on the concepts of operation template and virtual job shop, this paper attempts to solve several job shop scheduling problems with different scale and analyzes the relationship among the population size, mutation probability, the number of evolving generations and the complexity of the undertaking problem visually by using the trend chart of the fitness curves. This visual analysis could provide some referencing information for the adjustment of genetic algorithm running parameters.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic analyses of scheduling in papermaking process,a niche-based genetic algorithm for it is proposed.Besides the ability of stochastic global searching of Simple Genetic Algorithm(SGA),the algorithm involves niche technology and the use of inverse operators.It can be implemented simply and quickly.Simulation results show that the algorithm for scheduling in papermaking process is efficient and practical.

Abstract:a class of typical production scheduling problems, job shop scheduling is one of the strongly NP-complete combinatorial optimisation problems, for which an enhanced genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper. An effective crossover operation for operation-based representation is used to guarantee the feasibility of the solutions, which are decoded into active schedules during the search process. The classical mutation operator is replaced by the metropolis sample process of simulated annealing with a probabilistic jumping property, to enhance the neighbourhood search and to avoid premature convergence with controllable deteriorating probability, as well as avoiding the difficulty of choosing the mutation rate. Multiple state generators are applied in a hybrid way to enhance the exploring potential and to enrich the diversity of neighbour-hoods. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, whose optimisation performance is markedly superior to that of a simple genetic algorithm and simulated annealing and is comparable to the best result reported in the literature.
An Algorithm for Job Shop Scheduling in Dual Resource Constrained with AGV

Abstract:In job shop scheduling, AGV only plays the role of parts transportation and its route selection influences the choice of alternative processing path. The dispatching mechanism of AGV was discussed in detail. A mathematical model was built on analysis of the dual resource constrained problem. The architecture of a dispatching approach with genetic algorithm was proposed to solve job shop scheduling problem under dual resource constrained of machine and AGV. A crossover operation based on operation features was designed to transmit the relationship of the parent chromosomes. Coding, selection and mutation were also discussed in detail. The simulation result shows that the approach is feasible and provides a good practical way for job shop scheduling under dual resource constrained of machine and AGV.

Abstract:A new approach to the solution of jobshop scheduling problems(JSP) based on evolutionary algorithm was put forward. Based upon the mixed integer model of the JSP, the proposed approach considered the JSP as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. With genetic algorithm and evolution strategy,the procedures for the solution of MINLP problem were presented respectively. Constraints of MINLP problems were dealt with by using the penalty function method and Deb approach. Computer simulations for a numerical example show that the proposed approach for the JSP problem is simpler in coding, designing of genetic and evolutionary operators together with decoding. By utilizing this approach, much time can be saved in understanding the unsolved problems in detail. The proposed approach can also be applied to a much wider range of scheduling problems.

Abstract:Based on genetic algorithm and schedule theory, a two dimension coding genetic algorithm is presented for solving the NP-hard single machine total weighted completion time problem with controllable processing times. When the mathematic model is given, the two dimension coding method is proposed to describe the job sequence and actual processing time. Because of the problem's characters, the new crossover and mutation operations of GA are defined. The two dimension coding GA not only can start with better initial populations, but also can reach the solutions more precise and faster. Applying it to the example, the simulation results show that satisfactory performance is obtained

Abstract:For the job shop scheduling optimization problem,population initialization method and neighborhood search mechanism of its solution genetic algorithm are studied.To improve the quality of the initial population,heuristic initialization method that combining active scheduling,non-delay scheduling with heuristic rules is adopted.Neighborhood structure is constructed based on the critical path.Neighborhood search moving of the key operations is carried out based on operation-based encoding to avoid infeasible solutions and chromosome testing-repair work.Different neighborhood moving for the first,inside and last operations of the operation block is defined respectively.Based on the active decoded gantt chart,to standardize the chromosome by the operation start time,and get the chromosome that the operation’s position order is in accordance with the actual processing order on machines.For the expansion of the range of operation neighborhood search,the right moving is operated on the gantt chart,and to standardize the chromosome reversely by the operation completion time.Neighborhood search is implemented on the two standardized chromosome individuals obtained by forward and reverse standardization.Benchmark problems are applied to test the proposed algorithm,and effectiveress is verified.
Genetic algorithm with new initialization mechanism for flexible job shop scheduling

Abstract:A novel initialization method for machine chains was proposed based on short time and workloads balancing strategies to improve the quality of initial population for the flexible job shop scheduling genetic algorithm (GA-I). The uniform design principle was applied to combine alternative machines with the shortest processing time for each operation uniformly, and the initial population of machine chains optimization genetic algorithm (GA-II) was constructed. Different weights were designed based on uniform design method, and the machine chains optimization fitness function with different weighted-combinations of total machine load and its variance was constituted. The optimized machine distribution chains were selected as the machine chains initial population for flexible job shop scheduling problem genetic algorithm (GA-I). Hybrid cross and mutation were operated on job and operation levels, thus an efficient algorithm for flexible job shop scheduling problem was achieved. Finally, the feasibility and validity of the proposed method was demonstrated with typical examples.

Abstract:For the multi-objective scheduling of the flexible job-shop problem with a non-zero part-arrive-time and machine-available-time,an improved genetic algorithm was proposed.Double-chain structure with machine-allocation-chain and operation-sequence-chain was used to code the chromosome;Population was initialized with three methods: uniform design,shortest-processing-time machine assignment,and random generation.Population selection was performed with tournament-selection,elitist-selection,and new-born-selection.A hybrid crossover method was proposed,including traditional crossover,machine-bottleneck oriented and job-bottleneck oriented crossover.The mutation was performed with an adaptable probability.The decoding process was controlled with heuristic rules.Finally,case-studies based on some typical benchmark-examples were carried out to evaluate the algorithm.The results show a quicker speed and powerful optimizing capability.

Abstract:A new genetic algorithm is studied for solving parallel machine scheduling problems with process constraint to minimize the total number of tardy jobs. A so-called vector-group coding method is presented, which shows the quality of coding simply, decoding fast and satisfying process constraints automatically. A new crossover operator named Extended Order Crossover (EOX) is then proposed, which has the merits of automatically satisfying procedure constraints and preserving much genetic information. Mutation, the other genetic operator, is implemented with the combination of bit-mutation and swap-mutation to keep the population diverse. The algorithm behaves more efficiently than others experimentally using various random data and application instance from practical production line.

Abstract:Evolutionary algorithms approach to solution of the jobshop scheduling problems (JSP) is studied. Different from the existing genetic algorithm approach to JSP, the approach proposed in this paper is based upon the mixed integer model of the JSP, and casts the JSP as a mixed integer linear or nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. With genetic algorithm and evolution strategy, the procedures for solution of MINLP problems are presented respectively. Constraints of the MINLP problems are dealt with easily by using the penalty function method and the Deb approach. At the end of the paper, computer simulations for a numerical example are made, and the results show that the proposed approach is effective.

Abstract:The Genetic algorithm is one of the effective methods to solve flexible job shop scheduling problems. An improved genetic algorithm is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of traditional genetic algorithm, such as weak searching ability and long running time when solving FJSP. There are two main improvements. First, the algorithm adopted a new generation mechanism to produce the initial population, which could accelerate the convergence speed of the algorithm. Second, a new single-point mutation operation is designed to avoid the occurrence of illegal solutions, thus reducing the running time of the algorithm. The simulation results proved that the improved algorithm has better performance than some other algorithms.

Abstract:To address the situation that the existing flexible job shop scheduling problem does not consider the influence of buffer constraints on job scheduling, which leads to the inapplicability of the scheduling scheme in the actual scheduling operation, this paper proposes a flexible job shop scheduling problem that considers buffer constraints and designs an improved genetic algorithm to solve the problem model. A reasonable coding and decoding method is designed according to the model and algorithm characteristics, as well as a reasonable operation conflict adjustment method for the operation conflict situation brought about by the buffer constraint. Since there are problems of insufficient initial population diversity, low quality and low genetic operator search ability with the genetic algorithm, we propose the improve initial population of genetic algorithm, and finally verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed improvement mechanism by experiments in solving this problem.

Abstract:Aiming at the Vehicle Scheduling Problem with non-full load,the paper has proposed a kind of adaptive genetic algorithm based on Grefenstette coding.This coding method can make any of genotype individual of operation correspondent to a travel route with real significance after crossover operator and mutation operation.During the crossover operator and mutation operation,premature convergence and destruction of chromosome are avoided by introducing self-adaptation adjust tactics.The simulation shows that the algorithm proposed in this paper is effective compared with simple genetic algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new genetic algorithm based on a heuristic procedure for parallel machine scheduling problems with procedure constraints and the objective of minimizing the total number of tardy jobs. Firstly, we present a new coding method based on 2-dimensional vectors which are used to construct a chromosome with two rows. In each chromosome, the first row and the second row correspond to a job-selection policy and a job-sequencing policy, respectively. Then, we decompose the discussed parallel machine scheduling problem into several independent single machine scheduling problems with the objective of minimizing the total number of tardy jobs after the job-selection policy is determined. Furthermore, by means of constructing the heuristic procedure for solving the corresponding single machine scheduling problem, we generate the corresponding second row of each chromosome in the course of generating the initial population and performing operators such as crossover and mutation. Finally, using the practical production data from a large color-weaving enterprise, we make numerical computations for different-scale parallel machine scheduling problems with procedure constraints, and apply the proposed algorithm to the above enterprise. Results of numerical computations and practical applications show that the proposed algorithm is very effective and is suitable for large-scale parallel machine scheduling problems with procedure constraints.

Abstract:The flexible job shop scheduling problem is a very important problem in factory scheduling. Most of existing researches only consider the processing time of each operation, however, jobs often require transporting to another machine for the next operation while machines often require setup to process the next job. In addition, the times associated with these steps increase the complexity of this problem. In this paper, the flexible job scheduling problem is solved that incorporates not only processing time but setup time and transportation time as well. After presenting the problem, an improved genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem, with the aim of minimizing the makespan time, minimizing total setup time, and minimizing total transportation time. In the improved genetic algorithm, initial solutions are generated through three different methods to improve the quality and diversity of the initial population. Then, a crossover method with artificial pairing is adopted to preserve good solutions and improve poor solutions effectively. In addition, an adaptive weight mechanism is applied to alter mutation probability and search ranges dynamically for individuals in the population. By a series of experiments with standard datasets, we demonstrate the validity of our approach and its strong performance.
