Abstract:L'Ancien Regime et la Revolution is not a book on the French Revolution written in the classical way we are familiar with.The author Alexis de Tocqueville,viewing from perspectives of an aristocratic liberal, made plenty of original observations about the historical connections in terms of political culture between the Old Regime and the French Revolution.This article,based on the four core concepts frequently used in the book,such as the Old Regime,the French Revolution,the centralization,and the political liberty,explores Tocqueville's fundamental ideas in answering the central question of his work "How did the Old Regime generate the Revolution",which had been reorganized in three aspects as follows:the growing and social consequences of the jealousy and hostility under the Old Regime,the rising and flooding of the literary politics,and the self-destroying effect of the royal government's administrative centralization.The most conspicuous feature of the book,according to this article,might consist in that it suggested for the first time some possible ways in avoiding revolutions during the course of modernization.

Abstract:Reflection on and criticism of enlightenment reason is an indispensable part of the Enlightenment itself. It is an important counterbalance to the Enlightenment myth and the crisis of modernity, as well as being a major theoretical subject for political philosophy in the age of globalization. This reflection and criticism must be grasped and examined from both the external perspective of socio-historical requirements and the internal perspective of intellectual history. While giving full credit to the achievements of Enlightenment reason and modernity, we need to review their inherent conflicts, reveal the resultant social crisis, and sort out, reflect on and reference postmodernism's denunciation of Enlightenment reason and the crisis of modernity in order to provide a more far-reaching solution to these issues. Marx turned the critique of Enlightenment reason and modernity into a critical reconstruction of the logic of capital and the capitalist mode of production, seeing the resolution of these evils as lying in transcendence of capitalist private ownership. In this way, he brought the critique of Enlightenment reason to a climax and showed modern society a way to more advanced development.

Abstract:Alexis de Tocqueville developed his social theory through his reflections on social problems. By the analysis of his writings on pauperism and prison reform, this article points out how Tocqueville deepened his understanding of democracy in the close relationship that he established between social problems and industry and democracy. In his efforts to resolve the social problems by the social reform based on democracy, Tocqueville revealed in his social theory and social reform his moralist concern, which was to construct the individual responsibility and social bond.

Abstract:From the beginning of the twentieth century, the French Revolution has always been an important reference for the Chinese Revolutions. Recently, Tocqueville's L'Ancien Regime et la Revolution was vigorously discussed in China. This shows that the Revolution always arouses large public interest. After twenty years of development, the Chinese public, no longer obsessed by the myth of economic panacea, sees the reflection of the Chinese reality in Tocqueville' s L'Ancien Regime: social injustice and the faults of a political system made more and more clear by economic development. At the same time, one fears that the reform is likely to accelerate the collapse of the political system. L'Ancien Regime et la Revolution francaise reveals deep anxiety behind the prosperous reality.

Abstract:Tocqueville's imperialism has recently attracted much attention in Tocqueville studies. The challenge is to reconcile his imperialism to his liberalism. Is Tocqueville merely a classical liberal thinker who based his liberal theory on human rights and universal humanism? If so, then his support for imperialism would inevitably seem irrational and awkward. The present contribution questions this approach and argues that Tocqueville is more influenced by a republican tradition of freedom, on account of which he grants a positive value to both the state as a political community and to its power as a necessary instrument in the protection of freedom. On these grounds we may explain his sense of empire from the perspective of his liberal theory, while simultaneously adjusting our understanding of his liberalism.(1)

Abstract:Tocqueville, although born of a noble family, rationally considered that an aristocratic society would decline and a democratic society would be coming, and that democracy was an important character of modern society. Accordingly, he made an analysis of characteristics, values and shortcomings of aristocratic liberty and the nature of democracy. He believed that in a democratic era it was impossible for liberty to be built on the basis of aristocracy, and meanwhile he was especially interested in how to avoid democratic despotism and how to avoid destroying liberty in the name of democracy. Hence, Tocqueville expected that the coming society was not only democratic but also liberal.In such a society the union of liberty and democracy would be achieved.

Abstract:Many commentators in the post-Cold War period have attempted to transplant Tocqueville's thesis,that"the Great French Revolution further strengthened the'centralization'that the'old system'had already promoted",into the context of the twentieth-century China.This attempt overlooks the different positions of the two countries in the modem international system.In Tocqueville's vision,China occupies a position similar to that of Algeria,the French colony.However,how the colonized should fight for Tocqueville-style liberty is exact-ly the weak point in Tocqueville's thought.His differentiated attitudes towards colonizers and the colonized are deeply associated with his aristocratic concept of"liberty".A raised consciousness of China's place in the mod-em international system provides the key not only to re-understanding Tocqueville,but also to understanding the legitimacy of"Chinese-style modernization".In fact,"Chinese-style modernization"is based on the negation of the legitimacy of colonialism.A deep reflection on how colonialism has shaped the intellectual tradition of ar-ea studies in the modern West will help us establish China's subjectivity in the construction of her"independent knowledge system".

Abstract:A fundamental question that has concerned social scientists since Barrington Moore is the political transformations that accompanied agrarian societies’ transitions to modern economy. One paradigmatic case is the peasant-based Communist revolution in China, the causes of which have been the subject of a long-standing debate. Scholars have emphasized peasant proletarianization, Communist leadership in peasant nationalism, the attraction of their socio- economic reforms, their effective mobilization, Nationalists’ failures, and geographical conditions. Based on county gazetteers and administrative records of 154 counties in the most heavily contested region during the crucial years, we conduct the first multivariate local-level analysis of revolution. The results show little support for existing narratives. Instead, they substantiate what we call the “Tocqueville-Fei thesis”, that state centralization in agrarian bureaucratic polities inadvertently facilitated social revolution. The state’s effort to penetrate local communities undermined traditional governance structures, upsetting the balance between the state and local norms/elites and turning state agents into unbridled predators on peasants, which created favorable conditions for the Communists. This study has implications for understanding the modernization of agrarian societies and the dynamics of social change, and casts new light on the long-term trajectory of the state-society relationship in China.

Abstract:In The Old Regime and the Revolution,Alexis de Tocqueville pointed out the demerits of French centralized system —the "old regime",and took it as the root-cause for the breaking of traditional French urban and rural self-government.Tocqueville was not fully aware of the interaction between the centralized state and the autonomous system in its development,ignoring the differences between traditional autonomy and modern autonomy.Moreover,he failed to realize the significance for the former to achieve self-negation and transcendence through the transformation with state power.In this regard,it is necessary to analyze the inspirations and limitations of Tocqueville so as to explore the social changes in France,and further discuss the dialectical relationship between centralized state and social autonomy.

Abstract:In his defenses of empire, Alexis de Tocqueville emphasized the need to achieve grandeur for France, and his writings on Algeria have shaped our understanding of his political career. In pursuing empire abroad as a remedy for weak politics at home, scholars maintain that Tocqueville abandoned the participatory politics of Democracy in America. This essay argues, however, that the focus on Tocqueville’s international turn has obscured his interest in the greatness of domestic party politics. It demonstrates that Tocqueville championed a version of grandeur tied to the latent energies of the lower classes and distinct from the Bonapartism and aristocratic nostalgia that characterized his thoughts on empire. This version of grandeur was a political reclamation of disagreement and debate that supported great party opposition to counter the malaise of bourgeois rule. The essay concludes by comparing Tocqueville’s attitude toward foreign others, whose freedoms had to be sacrificed to the cause of French nationalism, with his description of the lower classes within his own nation, whose inclusion in the franchise could foster great politics. This comparison enables us to draw modest lessons for interpreting political grandeur in the present day.

Abstract:Vendean Rebellion was a significant event during the French Revolution.The rebellion should not simply be attributed to the ignorant and conservative nature of the Vendean peasants.Instead,it resulted from a conflict of interests in policies between the Republic and the Vendean peasants.The policies of the French government should be to blame for it in some way.The repression of Vendean was not only the defense of the new republic,but also reflected the excessive use of terror.The phenomena such as Vendean Rebellion are not exceptional in the modern world history,there have existed under-privileged groups who rebel against,and are ultimately defeated by,the government.To rethink Vendean Rebellion would help to understand both the French Revolution and the similar phenomena.

Abstract:There is widespread disagreement about Tocqueville's conception of human nature, some going so far as to say that Tocqueville possessed no unified conception of human nature at all. In this paper, I aim to provide the essential principles of Tocqueville's conception of human nature through an examination of the way in which he describes the power of human circumstances, such as physical environment, social state, and religion, to shape human character by extracting the principles underlying these transformations. There is no “natural man” or man “in the state of nature” but instead a set of psychic operations that reveal a picture of human nature in which human freedom, or the ability to initiate action in pursuit of important objects, lies at the heart of human life.

Abstract:This paper pretends to explain the origins of the French Revolution, in particular in regards to its connection with the main proponents of the French Enlightenment. It argues that the Enlightenment movement was rather heterogeneous, shaped by many different thinkers with often incompatible views. The merits of Jean Jacques Rousseau in regards to conservation and education are described, while equivalently criticizing his rather collectivist ideas and his disputable views on women. It is argued that even if during the main period of the Enlightenment movement, liberal thinkers such as Montesquieu, Turgot, Lafayette and Condorcet had defined political theories based on individual freedom and competition, they were possibly “too far ahead of times” to significantly shape the French Revolution. Independently from the positive aspects of the Enlightenment movement, the actual French Revolution was often collectivist and nationalist and led to a violent phase – the ‘Reign of Terror’. Thus, this analysis allows us to understand the complexity and diversity of the Enlightenment movement and its relation to the actual French Revolution. Consequently, the revolution’s collectivist, nationalist and violent phase must be seen critically, also showing us that the implementation of democratic processes can bear risks, as the ‘majority rule’ can differ quite significantly to the concept of the ‘Rule of Law’.

Abstract:According to Tocqueville's petition,we can see that French aristocrats have outstanding enlightened features during the French Revolution,which can not change their history adversity of being overturned.Being overturned of aristocrats has little relationship with their enlightened features.Because the political system and the law framework can't be changed,so it is limited talking about the free questions,and the freedom is only the freedom of privileges.Radical characteristics of French Revolution present the relationship between the civilian and the privilege class,then relationship between the poor and the rich.Besides class relationship irrational factors which determine the fate of aristocrats in revolution such as rumors can not be neglected.

These ideas are rooted in mass mentality, which reveals how the equality of conditions will turn out to be a threat to democracy. Tocqueville's proposal combines political and social elements. His vision of liberalism, which forms a sharp contrast with contemporary liberalism, remains an intellectual treasure for us.

Abstract:As one of the most important leaders during the French Revolution, L'Abbé Sieyès has an indelible influence on the French revolutionary process and the French choice of its modern democratic model. His theory on the representative system (of government) and his political practice reflect the depth as well as limitations of the understanding of the 18th century French thinkers on the representative system. L'Abbé Sieyès, on the one hand, gives the representative system an indisputable modernity by introducing the principle of division of labor into the domain of politics; on the other hand, he is still under the influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's doctrine of popular sovereignty, insisting on the establishment of one chamber legislature and endowing it with absolute power. His ambiguous attitude towards representative government makes it impossible for him to strike a balance between popular sovereignty and the representative system. This is the philosophical factor that can account for the French revolutionaries' failure in establishing a representative government; and this is also a dilemma the modern French political system is faced with.

Abstract:There is a close connection between the radicalism of the Chinese New Culture Movement and that of the French Enlightenment.Chen Duxiu,the standard-bearer of the Chinese New Culture Movement, used to be an out-and-out “Francophile”,which was an outcome of the “Cult of France”prevailing in early 20th century China,in fact a popular worship of the radical revolutionary culture produced by the French Revolution.The radicalism of the Revolution derived from that of the French Enlightenment,while the origin of both was the intensive preference of the French nation for the value of “equality”.Both the Chinese and French nations bravely chose radical revolution to destroy regime of inequality,and readily faced all negative effects of this action.The French reformation projects of the political culture following the Revolu-tion,or the whole historical experiences of the French political modernization,might be worthy of our close concern.
