Abstract:There are 25 Chinese characters in"Shuowen.Jiezi"(说文解字)which are written as reversed or invertedforms of other Chinese characters.Some of them are new characters created consciously while the others are variantforms of ancient Chinese characters.They(1)describe the same things,behaviors or conditions opposite or contraryto the spatial direction as the original characters describe;(2)describe the images reverse to which the orinalcharacters describe;(3)give meanings completely opposite to those of original characters;(4)are used to distinguishsimilar but different things with the original characters;(5)give new meanings which are spread out from those oforiginal characters;(6)expand more abstract meanings.
Deciphering Emoji Variation in Courts: a Social Semiotic Perspective

Abstract:Emojis are increasingly being used as digital evidence in courts due to the miscommunication and misinterpretation arising from the high variability of their usage and interpretation. Emojis in courts have been extensively researched in extant studies, but relatively little attention has been paid to the emoji variation phenomena in Chinese courts. Through an empirical qualitative content analysis of the court judgments in China and the United States and some supplementary materials, this study posits that an emoji's meaning in courts can be subject to the following six categories of variations: i. variation across platforms, including devices, operating systems, software programs and clients; ii. temporal variation; iii. variation in court cases under different rules of evidence; iv. variation in individual participants; v. variation across social groups; and vi. linguistic-cultural variation. From a social semiotic perspective, emojis as dynamic signs have great meaning potentials, making their meanings context-dependent and interpreter-dependent. For this reason, it is suggested that legal professionals untangle and weave historical, social, cultural and legal contexts into the interpretation of an emoji's meaning. Moreover, a probe into the contextualized configuration of emojis can offer practical insights into the interpretation of emoji-bearing texts in judicial decision-making as well as the admissibility and investigation of digital evidence in courts.

Abstract:The synonymic interchange of characters in the Chu bamboo slips could be combined with other language phenomena, such as jiajie (假借), showing complexity as follows: one character was synonymously interchanged as another character, and then it was borrowed as the loan graph of a third character, which was same in pronunciation as the other character, or one character was borrowed as the loan graph of another character, and then it was synonymously interchanged as a third character, which is the same as or close in meaning to the other character. After one character was synonymously interchanged as another character, the interchanged character could be used as the phonetic component to construct new characters.

Abstract:Emojis, used evidentially as any language is used in communication, have posed new challenges for courts to adopt emojis as evidence beyond the traditional mode of speech and communication and to interpret them appropriately, especially their aggressive side of meaning. To meet these challenges, the present study, based on a comprehensive literature review, starts with case studies with aims to unravel the nature of emojis and develop a sociosemiotic approach to interpret emojis in the context of social media with a focus on the aggressiveness of emojis in social platforms and their consequences (social and legal ones). It is argued that the meaning of emojis could not simply depend on their grammar or general rules but lies in communication within discourse communities.

Abstract:Journey to the West is one of the four famous Chinese classical works and it was reproduced into TV drama both at home and abroad, which has aroused great concern. However, current studies mainly compare the English translated versions with Chinese one, focusing on the translation strategies for the verbal texts or on the cultural level. Therefore, this study explores different kinds of intersemiotic shifts in the subtitle translation of Journey to the West and reasons that have caused these intersemiotic shifts via a multimodal analytical framework. Ten episodes chosen according to the plots will be analyzed. Findings show that there are mainly six kinds of intersemiotic shifts in the Journey to the West. Image and para-/non-verbal modes can supplement the meaning expressed in the verbal texts.
[Understanding the symbolic values of Japanese onomatopoeia: comparison of Japanese and Chinese speakers]

Abstract:Do non-native speakers of the Japanese language understand the symbolic values of Japanese onomatopoeia matching a voiced/unvoiced consonant with a big/small sound made by a big/small object? In three experiments, participants who were native speakers of Japanese, Japanese-learning Chinese, or Chinese without knowledge of the Japanese language were shown two pictures. One picture was of a small object making a small sound, such as a small vase being broken, and the other was of a big object making a big sound, such as a big vase being broken. Participants were presented with two novel onomatopoetic words with voicing contrasts, e.g.,/dachan/vs./tachan/, and were told that each word corresponded to one of the two pictures. They were then asked to match the words to the corresponding pictures. Chinese without knowledge of Japanese performed only at chance level, whereas Japanese and Japanese-learning Chinese successfully matched a voiced/unvoiced consonant with a big/small object respectively. The results suggest that the key to understanding the symbolic values of voicing contrasts in Japanese onomatopoeia is some basic knowledge that is intrinsic to the Japanese language.

Abstract:The characters of Ba and Shu are bequeathed by enlightened dynasties in the Warring States Period, and the sounds and meanings of the characters have been lost for a very long time. There are over 300 characters on the wares that were unearthed in recent years can be taken as the study objects. According to textual research, it is found that the characters of Ba and Shu of ten coexisted with Chinese characters, so we can take the collating way to translate these characters and find the breakthrough to explain certain characters of Ba and Shu. By means of the speculation on the sounds and meanings of the characters, the font style of Ba and Shu characters can be analyzed.

Abstract:The explanations of words in Shuowenjiezi are Classified and thoroughly stud- ied in this article on the basis of Xushen's examples. Eight regulations are cited in the article according to the evolution of glyphs, and examples in the works which have been just dug out from under ground and examples in the traditional works. Xushen's theory of function words is also mentioned in this article.

Abstract:Many methods of linguistic steganography have been proposed by using synonym-substitution to preserve the meaning of the text. However, most of these methods replace words simply according to a static synonym set without considering the context. In this paper, we present a novel method that replaces a word by its synonym on condition that its synonym is suitable for the context. A synonym's candidates are chosen according to context, therefore, in different context the candidates can be different although the word to be replaced is the same. As a result, both of the synonym set and the encoding are dynamic. In our experiment, we use Chinese language to implement our method. The experimental results show that the method is almost twice as good as other two existing methods.

Abstract:As efficient tools in online interaction, Emojis have attracted ample attention fromresearchers in diverse fields, stressing that its pragmatic values deserve further systemic exploration.Against this background, this paper investigates the pragmatic functions of emojis through retrievinginteractive data between teachers and students in Wechat rooms. A total of 5 volunteers (4 teachersand 1 student) were invited to collect data from their teacher-student Wechat groups respectively.Forty-eight types of emoji in the corpus were described and analyzed, finally classified into 3 pragmaticfunctions: illocutionary function, interpersonal function and textual function. Specifically, emojis can:i) work as indicators of literal force (secondary illocutionary act) or indirect force (primary illocutionaryact). ii) work as rapport management strategies to maintain or enhance the relationship between/amonginterlocutors. iii) work as structural constituents, which will contribute to the opening, continuing orclosing of a conversation. Accordingly, these findings would contribute to the enrichment of theoreticalstudies of emojis, and the understanding of online discourse in mediated forms.

Abstract:The Book of Songs, known as the Shijing in Chinese, holds a lofty position and exerts a profound influence in the history of Chinese literature, establishing a fine tradition for Chinese poetry. Xu Yuanchong, a renowned translator in China, has translated The Book of Songs into the most widely circulated version in Chinese. In his translation practice, there is a theory called the "Three Aesthetics Theory" that governs the overall process, namely the aesthetics of content, phonetics and form. Currently, most of the research in the field of translation studies focuses on the "aesthetics of content" in Xu's translation, considering it more important than the "aesthetics of phonetics" and the "aesthetics of form," and playing a decisive role in the translation. However, the authors have noticed the countervailing effects of sound and rhyme on content and connotation, and therefore, conducted a related research on the effect of phonetics on the expression of content in the translated version of The Book of Songs (Shijing). After further study and researches, the authors have discovered that the role of sound and rhyme in poetry is not limited to the experience of beauty; the variations in sound and rhyme also affect the emotions conveyed in the poem, expressing the ups and downs of emotions. At the same time, there may be instances where excessive pursuit of sound and rhyme sacrifices the expression of content.

Abstract:The present paper conducts a corpus-based quantitative and qualitative study of explicitation in two well-known Chinese versions of William Shakespeare's Hamlet translated Liang Shiqiu and Zhu Shenghao respectively.In the light of typology of language functions proposed M.A.K.Halliday,evidences of explicitation are classified into those of ideational function information,of interpersonal function information and of textual function information.Research shows that explicitation in Zhu's version is more striking than in Liang's because they are targeted at different readerships and therefore resort to different translation strategies accordingly.

Abstract:In An Enchiridion of Mandarin, the object?disposal and object?passive patterns in Cantonese and Shanghai dialect fail to be dominant syntactical structures,for the Shanghai dialect object?preposition and the Cantonese object?postposition orders, while in spoken Mandarin, the markers such as"把","呌"indicate the agent?recipient relations. The passive markers"拨","俾"and"呌"differ in their origins with southern and northern types. Under the influence of Mandarin upon the level of sentence,the Cantonese carries on the"被",the passive marker,while impacted by the"把"analogy of the Ming Dynasty,the Shanghai dialect u?ses"拨"as a passive marker. In the similar way,"俾"in the Cantonese and"担/拿","扌戒"and"将/把",all have experienced the conversion from function?verbs to disposing markers. Influenced by Mandarin, the Cantonese has preserved the disposing marker"将"since the middle ancient times, and to some extent, the Shanghai dialect has accepted the role of the preposition"拿"since the Ming Dynasty and taken it as a disposing marker. These phenomena illustrate the synchronic plane variation in synonymous structure, reflec?ting the diachronic evolution at different levels in different stages.

Abstract:Speech To Text (STT) plays a significant role in Voice User Interface (VUI). While preserving necessary semantic information in converted text, STT generally captures no or limited emotional information. In this paper, we present an emojilization tool to automatically attach related emojis to the STT-generated texts by analyzing both textual and acoustic features in speech signals. For a given voice message, the tool selects the most representative emoji from 64 most commonly used emojis. We conducted a pilot study with 34 participants. In our study, 159 utterances were labeled with emojis by our tool. The emotion restoration effect was evaluated. The results indicate that the proposed tool effectively compensates for the emotion loss.

Abstract:The thesis studies on chain reaction of the main vowel of four groups Xie,Jia, Guo and Yu in Xiang, Wu and their neighbor dialects. It covers five sections as following: 1) giving any examples of the pronunciation of the two groups Guo and Jia; 2) explaining chain reaction and its course of the main vowel of four groups Xie, Jia, Guo and Yu in Xiang, Wu dialects and their neighbor dialects with vowel's action direction of Chinese dialect; 3) indicating this phenomenon not only present in Xiang and Wu dialects but also the other Chinese dialects; and 4) giving a further explanation for this change from historical and geographical perspectives.
