Abstract:The late results and the factors affecting the late results after total meniscectomy were studied. 98 patients with total meniscectomy were reviewed with an average follow-up period of 20 years (10 to 40 years). The results showed that 77.5% of the patients were pleased with the outcome. Statistical analysis indicated that the late results were related to the time of follow-up. Radiological degeneration of the knee was seen in 95.5% of the 44 patients, 29.5% of the 44 patients had satisfactory results according to the evaluation combined with objective and roentgenographic results. It is indicated from this retrospective study that meniscus has very important biomechanical function and osteoarthritis could be induced by total meniscectomy. It is suggested that injury of meniscus should be diagnosed and treated in early stage, total meniscectomy should be as for as possible avoided.
