Abstract:The PfafRan solutions of the BKP hierarchy is considered from the reduction viewpoint. It is shown that, by imposing proper differential constraint, the Grammian determinant type solutions of the KP hierarchy are naturally led to the PfafRan solutions of the BKP hierarchy.

Abstract:The talk presented at ICMP 97 focused on the scaling limits of critical percolation models, and some other systems whose salient features can be described by collections of random lines. In the scaling limit we keep track of features seen on the macroscopic scale, in situations where the short--distance scale at which the system's basic variables are defined is taken to zero. Among the challenging questions are the construction of the limit, and the explanation of some of the emergent properties, in particular the behavior under conformal maps as discussed in [LPS 94]. A descriptive account of the project, and some related open problems, is found in ref. [A] and in [AB] (joint work with A. Burchard) where tools are developed for establishing a curve--regularity condition which plays a key role in the construction of the limit. The formulation of the scaling limit as a random Web measure permits to formulate the question of uniqueness of measure(s) describing systems of random curves satisfying the conditions of independence, Euclidean invariance, and regularity. The uniqueness question remains open; progress on it could shed light on the purported universality of critical behavior and the apparent conformal invariance of the critical measures. The random Web yields also another perspective on some of the equations of conformal field theory which have appeared in this context, such as the equation proposed by J. Cardy [C].

Abstract:Restricting a linear system for the KP hierarchy to those independent variables t\_n with odd n, its compatibility (Zakharov-Shabat conditions) leads to the "odd KP hierarchy". The latter consists of pairs of equations for two dependent variables, taking values in a (typically noncommutative) associative algebra. If the algebra is commutative, the odd KP hierarchy is known to admit reductions to the BKP and the CKP hierarchy. We approach the odd KP hierarchy and its relation to BKP and CKP in different ways, and address the question whether noncommutative versions of the BKP and the CKP equation (and some of their reductions) exist. In particular, we derive a functional representation of a linear system for the odd KP hierarchy, which in the commutative case produces functional representations of the BKP and CKP hierarchies in terms of a tau function. Furthermore, we consider a functional representation of the KP hierarchy that involves a second (auxiliary) dependent variable and features the odd KP hierarchy directly as a subhierarchy. A method to generate large classes of exact solutions to the KP hierarchy from solutions to a linear matrix ODE system, via a hierarchy of matrix Riccati equations, then also applies to the odd KP hierarchy, and this in turn can be exploited, in particular, to obtain solutions to the BKP and CKP hierarchies.

Abstract:An explanation for the so-called constrained hierarhies is presented by linking them with the symmetries of the KP hierarchy. While the existence of ordinary symmetries (belonging to the hierarchy) allows one to reduce the KP hierarchy to the KdV hierarchies, the existence of additional symmetries allows to reduce KP to the constrained KP.

Abstract:We apply the gauge transformations (differential type) and (integral type) to study the discrete mKP hierarchies. We prove that and can be commutative and the product of and satisfies the Sato equation. By means of gauge transformations, we arrive at the necessary and sufficient condition for reducing the generalized Wronskian solutions to constrained hierarchies. Finally, we give an example in the Appendix.

Abstract:The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy has infinitely many Hamiltonian pairs, the n(th) pair of them is associated with L(n), where L is the pseudodifferential operator (PDO) [3, 4]. In this paper, by the factorization L(n) = L(n) ... L(1) with L(j), j = 1,...,n being the independent PDOs, we construct the Miura transformation for the KP, which leads to a decomposition of the second Hamiltonian structure in the n(th) pair to a direct sum. Each term in the sum is the second structure in the initial pair associated with L(j). When we impose a constraint (1.9) (i.e. a new type of reduction) to the KP hierarchy, we obtain the similar results for the constrained KP hierarchy. In particular the second Hamiltonian structure for this hierarchy is transformed to a vastly simpler one.

Abstract:By using pseudo-differential operators containing two derivations, we extend the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy to a certain KP-mKP hierarchy. For the KP-mKP hierarchy, we obtain its Bäcklund transformations, bilinear equations of Baker-Akhiezer functions and Hirota equations of tau functions. Moreover, we show that this hierarchy is equivalent to a subhierarchy of the dispersive Whitham hierarchy associated to the Riemann sphere with its infinity point and one movable point marked.

Abstract:It is shown that it is possible to write down tau functions for the $n$-component KP hierarchy in terms of non-abelian theta functions. This is a generalization of the rank 1 situation; that is, the relation of theta functions of Jacobians and tau functions for the KP hierarchy.

Abstract:We show that any multi-component matrix KP hierarchy is equivalent to the standard one-component (scalar) KP hierarchy endowed with a special infinite set of abelian additional symmetries, generated by squared eigenfunction potentials. This allows to employ a special version of the familiar Darboux-B"acklund transformation techniques within the ordinary scalar KP hierarchy in the Sato formulation for a systematic derivation of explicit multiple-Wronskian tau-function solutions of all multi-component matrix KP hierarchies.

Abstract:For the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy constructed in terms of the famous Sato theory, a ‘‘k constraint’’ is proposed that leads the hierarchy to the nonlinear system involving a finite number of dynamical coordinates. The eigenvalue problem of the k-constrained system is naturally obtained from the linear system of the KP hierarchy, which takes the form of kth-order polynomial coupled with a first-order one, thus we are able to derive the correspondent Lax pair, recursion operator, bi-Hamiltonian structures, and conserved quantities. The constraints for the BKP hierarchy are also sketched.

Abstract:In this paper, we study two generalized constrained integrable hierarchies, which are called the $c$-$k$ constrained KP and BKP hierarchies. The Fermionic picture of the $c$-$k$ constrained KP hierarchy is given. We give some solutions for the $c$-$k$ constrained KP hierarchy by using the free Fermion operators and define its additional symmetries. Its additional flows form a subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra. Furthermore, the additional flows acting on eigenfunctions $q_{i}(t)$ and adjoint eigenfunctions $r_{i}(t)$ of the $c$-$k$ constrained KP hierarchy are presented. Next, we define the $c$-$k$ constrained BKP hierarchy and obtain its bilinear identity and solutions. The algebra formed by the additional symmetric flow of the $c$-$k$ constrained BKP hierarchy that we defined is still a subalgebra of the Virasoro algebra and it is a subalgebra of the algebra formed by the additional flows of the $c$-$k$ constrained KP hierarchy.

Abstract:We study the KP and the k-constrained KP hierarchy where the negative part of the KP microdifferential operator is forced to take the form q partial derivative-1r. The bilinear identity Res(lambda)[(lambda-lambda0)psiBAR(t)psi%(t')] = 0 is derived as the bilinear Backlund transformation (BT) for the KP hierarchy. For the k-constrained KP hierarchy we find two additional bilinear relations which together with the above identity form the bilinear BT.

Abstract:A combination of dressing method and variation of constants as well as a formula for constructing the eigenfunction is used to solve the extended KP hierarchy, which is a hierarchy with one more series of time-flow and based on the symmetry constaint of KP hierarchy. Similarly, extended mKP hierarchy is formulated and its zero curvature form, Lax representation and reductions are presented. Via gauge transformation, it is easy to transform dressing solutions of extended KP hierarchy to the solutions of extended mKP hierarchy. Wronskian solutions of extended KP and extended mKP hierarchies are constructed explicitly.

Abstract:We give a matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structures of constrained KP hierarchy. First, we derive from the matrix formulation the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy, which was originally obtained by Oevel and Strampp. We then generalize the derivation to the multi-constraint case and show that the resulting bracket is actually the second Gelfand-Dickey bracket associated with the corresponding Lax operator. The matrix formulation of the Hamiltonian structure of the one-constraint KP hierarchy in the form introduced in the study of matrix model is also discussed

Abstract:We use the method of Darboux coverings to discuss the invariant submanifolds of the KP equations presented as conservation laws in the space of monic Laurent series in the spectral parameter (the space of the Hamiltonian densities). We identify a special class of these submanifolds with the rational invariant submanifolds entering matrix models of two-dimensional gravity recently characterized by Dickey and Krichever. Four examples of the general procedure are provided.
