Abstract:Based on Cournot model and Stachelberg model this paper analyzes the effects of two firms’ entry in the context of network externalities. The results show that the way of entry and the strength of network externalities play the key roles in the firms’ entry and competitive advantage. Abstract:Owing to networks widespread in modern society, standard competition with network effect is now endowed with new connotation. This paper aims to study the impact of network effect on standard competition; it is organized in the mode of "introduction-model setup-equilibrium analysis-conclusion". Starting from a well-structured model of evolutionary game, it is then extended to a dynamic analysis. This article proves both theoretically and empirically that whether or not a standard can lead the market trends depends on the utility it would bring, and the author also discusses some advisable strategies revolving around the two factors of initial position and border break.

Abstract:Mobile social networks have greatly strengthened people's online social interactions, generating massive volume of mobile data traffic, and bringing remarkable revenues to the wireless service providers. Meanwhile, the potential revenue growth is restrained by the network capacity of physical communication infrastructure and also challenged by the competition among service providers. In this paper, we study the pricing strategies of multiple service providers in a competitive data service market, where mobile users’ data consumption behaviors are influenced by two effects: the positive network effect and the congestion effect. To analyze the strategic interactions between mobile users and service providers, we devise a two-stage Stackelberg game consisting a pricing game in Stage I and a usage game in Stage II, respectively. In particular, for the usage game, we characterize the equilibrium solution and establish its uniqueness. For the pricing game, our analysis indicates that a mixed-strategy equilibrium solution is guaranteed for the scenario with rational providers as well as the scenario with providers of bounded rationality. We further develop a distributed learning algorithm for finding a mixed-strategy equilibrium solution in the second scenario. Our numerical results provide insights into how positive the network effect and the congestion effect would impact the system performance, and demonstrate that the bounded rational behavior incurs degradation to service providers’ revenues.

Abstract:Network externality and compatibility are the most significant features of network economy.Furthermore,compatibility between products supplied by different firms is the important feature of network economics and turns out to be a strategic issue in industries exhibiting network externalities.In this paper we study incumbent firms' compatibility strategies when market entry of competitive firm may occur by using a three-stage game theory model with network externalities.The results show that the compatibility strategies of incumbents and the entry of competitive firm strongly depend on the strength degree of network externalities and the entry fixed cost.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the impact of network effects on the market structure of network industries. It starts from the concept of "network effects" and then extends to a simplified model of market structure and the empirical test of China's Internet industries. It draws the conclusion that the market structure of network industries with strong network effects tends to be more concentrated and monopolistic compared to industries without network effects.

Abstract:Network externality is the most significant feature of network industries and influences all kinds of enterprises′ competitive strategies,such as product differentiation,pricing,compatibility,etc.From the evolution point of view,by constructing dynamic Cournot model,the paper analyzes the network externalities′ effects as entry barriers on enterprises decisions of markets entries and dynamic evolution of market structure.In terms of the stability analysis of equilibrium points,which are represented by the strength degree of network externalities,the results show that the strength of network externalities plays the key role in markets entries and competitive advantages.Furthermore,the results also stress that strength of network externalities drives actively dynamic regulation of market structure.Hence,the results are useful for enterprises and social regulators to decide competitive strategies and industrial policies.

Abstract:This paper explores the determinants of network effects of the two-sided online games market. We have used the Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) industry as the empirical context to explore these network effect determinants. With an inductive, qualitative case study on the MMORPG ecosystem, we have developed an integrated framework combining network structural characteristics (strong tie communication and weak tie creation) and network functioning characteristics (value-informed pricing and accessory diversification), which are the key determinants of network effects. Furthermore, business ecosystem characteristics, such as internal and external resource support, will moderate and strengthen such relationships. This article not only contributes to the determinants of network effect theories, but also has implications for the practitioners in the MMORPG industry.

Abstract:This paper studies how some factors deviate human interaction from what classic game theory predicts. In particular, we focus on the factor of interpersonal relations among human players, which plays a crucial role in their strategy choosing in real-life games. For such a game, we characterise these relations by a directed and weighted social network, and discuss how to integrate its effect into the payoff matrix of the game. Also, we introduce a solution concept named relation equilibrium for such games. Finally, our model is used to analyse how a deviation will happen in a well-known game, prisoner's dilemma, in the case that the players are networked. Accordingly, our model can be used in explanation, prediction, mechanism design and guide people's action in real life.

Abstract:By employing dynamic game methods,price competition and compatibility decisions between domestic and foreign firms in an industry with network externalities when tariff is levied are focused on.The results show that network externality intensifies price competition while the compatibility weakens the competition.The tariff as a substitute for quality differences determines the market advantage position between domestic and foreign firms.Hence,suitable tariff is helpful for both the development of domestic firm and the market entry of foreign firm.Furthermore,the marginal compatibility costs determine the optimal compatibility degree.These results would be useful for the decisions making of firms and government.

Abstract:Community networks, the distinguishing feature of which is membership admittance, appear on P2P networks, social networks, and conventional Web networks. Joining the network costs money, time or network bandwidth, but the individuals get access to special resources owned by the community in return. The prosperity and stability of the community are determined by both the policy of admittance and the attraction of the privileges gained by joining. However, some misbehaving users can get the dedicated resources with some illicit and low-cost approaches, which introduce instability into the community, a phenomenon that will destroy the membership policy. In this paper, we analyze on the stability using game theory on such a phenomenon. We propose a game-theoretical model of stability analysis in community networks and provide conditions for a stable community. We then extend the model to analyze the effectiveness of different incentive policies, which could be used when the community cannot maintain its members in certain situations. Then we verify those models through a simulation. Finally, we discuss several ways to promote community network's stability by adjusting the network's properties and give some proposal on the designs of these types of networks from the points of game theory and stability.

Abstract:International entry research rarely examines strategies affecting entry performance in a target country, largely due to data limitations in the traditional multinational enterprise setting. However, the emergence of digital business with trackable international performance data helps address this gap. We utilize digital freemium products as our research context to examine the effect of two major demand-side strategies associated with freemium products, network effects and word-of-mouth (WOM), on entry performance across different institutional environments. By analyzing 1,891 freemium games, we show that lower network readiness of a target country strengthens the impact of network effects on entry performance whereas higher network readiness strengthens the impact of WOM. Our findings generate new insights by integrating the literature on foreign entry performance and digital internationalization.

Abstract:Through a three_stage dynamic game model, the paper analyzes the motive and social effect of enterprise horizontal merger in the market with four firms, which exists network externality. The results show, even if in the face of the threat of retort from the followers' merger, the pioneers always have the motive of merger. And the tactic of followers is related to the intensity of network externality. At the equilibrium, though consumer surplus is impaired when the intensity of network externality is within the definite range, social welfare is improved.

The Evolution of Price Competition Game on Complex Networks

Abstract:The well-known “Bertrand paradox” describes a price competition game in which two competing firms reach an outcome where both charge a price equal to the marginal cost. The fact that the Bertrand paradox often goes against empirical evidences has intrigued many researchers. In this work, we study the game from a new theoretical perspective—an evolutionary game on complex networks. Three classic network models, square lattice, WS small-world network, and BA scale-free network, are used to describe the competitive relations among the firms which are bounded rational. The analysis result shows that full price keeping is one of the evolutionary equilibriums in a well-mixed interaction situation. Detailed experiment results indicate that the price-keeping phenomenon emerges in a square lattice, small-world network and scale-free network much more frequently than in a complete network which represents the well-mixed interaction situation. While the square lattice has little advantage in achieving full price keeping, the small-world network and the scale-free network exhibit a stronger capability in full price keeping than the complete network. This means that a complex competitive relation is a crucial factor for maintaining the price in the real world. Moreover, competition scale, original price, degree of cutting price, and demand sensitivity to price show a significant influence on price evolution on a complex network. The payoff scheme, which describes how each firm’s payoff is calculated in each round game, only influences the price evolution on the scale-free network. These results provide new and important insights for understanding price competition in the real world.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the effect of regulation on an industry equilibrium.This is achieved by analyzing an incomplete information market entry dynamic game model.Assume the cost of the existing firm obeys continuously distribution in the monopoly industry.The cost of rent-seeking is introduced into the game model.We then analyze the relationship between the pattern of behavior and the level of the regulation of existing firm along with other entrants,as well as the effect of the regulation social welfare and customer surplus.The result is finally tested by examples and case studies.

Abstract:Decision-making of market entry and incumbents defense is one of the most important issues in business activities as well as the research hotspot in academic community. This paper adopts game theory to study market-entry decisions of e-retailers in e-marketplace environment. All e-retailers are classified into two categories: one belongs to “giants” who have a great quantity of investments and aim to earn large profits. Another belongs to “dwarfs” who invest not so much and are less eager to make profit. To study the different characters between them and make entry decision in virtual business world, an e-commerce market entry game model is proposed. Using this model, a simulation of market entry decision is formed and a game tree is drawn to analyze the equilibrium. In addition to pure strategy equilibriums, the mixed strategy equilibriums are also analyzed to explore the probability of entrance into the market. Finally, through quantitative analyses, the proposed model demonstrates effective application for e-commerce context and meaningful advice for entrants to make entry or exit decision.

Abstract:With the presence of both switching cost and network externality, this paper builds a two-stage model for competition between two platforms. In stage one, an incumbent platform controls the market as a monopolist and sets a price to acquire a user base. In stage two, a new platform enters the market to compete against the incumbent. We consider a non-strategic competitor with a free product in the benchmark model and also extend the model to allow for a strategic competitor. Our main results show: (1) When the switching cost is relatively high and the network externality is relatively low, the first mover adopts a closed strategy by maintaining a high price in stage two and harvesting profits from its original users. (2) When the switching cost is relatively low and the network externality is relatively high, the first mover adopts an open strategy by setting a low price to acquire more users in stage two, and the first-mover advantage based on the presence of switching cost will become ineffective. Our work rationalizes the coexistence of high competition and high concentration in a market with strong network externality, and thus provides a reasonable explanation for the existing paradox: even though the internet industry is much more competitive than traditional industries, the concentration level of internet industry is still higher than that of traditional industries.
