Abstract:A study was conducted to determine DDT fractionation in agricultural soil and the bioavailability of various fractions wheat roots. DDT spiked soil samples with various aging periods were used for the study. Sequential extraction technique with ASE was developed using water, hexane and a mixed solvent of hexane and acetone as solvents. The key findings of the study include: 1) The quantity of DDT extracted by water or hexane declined with the increasing of aging period and the quantity extracted by the hexane/acetone increased with the increasing of aging period. Root uptake of DDT decreased with the increasing of ageing period as well. Significant positive correlation between the quantity extracted by hexane and bioavailability was found. Hexane can be used as a reagent for extracting the bioavailable fraction of DDTs in soil.
