Abstract:The demand for reducing fuel consumption and emission of mobile machines is increasing since they consume large amount of energy and generate huge exhaust each year. The wheel loader is a representative mobile machine and large wheel loader typically employs a hydrodynamic torque converter and an automatic transmission in the powertrain. The torque converter provides large torque amplification at low vehicle speed, however generates large amount of heat inside. This brings a challenge during frequent vehicle start and stop. In this study, an alternative torque conversion solution to the powertrain of mobile machine with a power split hydraulic transmission is proposed, where the hydraulic transmission is a substitute for the torque converter. It eliminates overheating problem by dissipating the heat inside through its outlet. The mathematical models of the proposed powertrain including the wheel drive and working function are developed. An engine-speed-based system optimization is conducted and a rule-based control strategy based on optimization results is developed. The engine operations and engine fuel consumptions with optimization-based and rule-based control strategies are compared using three different loading cycles (57 s, 30 s, 90 s). The results show the effectiveness of proposed powertrain solution and its control strategy.

Abstract:This paper makes a research into the pressure variation process of the hydraulic cylinder in automobile hydraulic transmission processing,carries on the modeling and the stress analysis of such prime processing cycles as the hydraulic pump,the hydraulic cylinder and the pipe-line valve which are related to the hydraulic system,and obtains the liquid head change relations as well as each work link's stress situation in its work process.Based on these,it designs a key working schematic diagram of hydraulic control system.Then it carries on the modeling and abstraction about some main parameters of the hydraulic system such as the main valve,pipe wall,liquid flow,including establishing the direct relationships between these main parameters,and obtains the relative relationships of the liquid flow and the compression ratio in the hydraulic cylinder.Finally,it carries on an analysis of the dynamic control performance of the hydraulic actuation system,and gets the performance relationships of such main parameters as its pressure,current flow and capacity.

Abstract:The hydraulic torque converter is a critical component in high-power tracked vehicles such as bulldozers or bridge machines. Its axial force has a significant impact on the reliability and load-carrying capacity of the transmission system, which is greatly influenced by the charging oil conditions. To investigate the axial force characteristic of the torque converter and its charging oil effects, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is established by considering inner and outer leakage regions, as well as inlet and outlet channels. Additionally, a novel axial force-testing method is proposed, and the axial force testing and validation experiments on the torque converter prototype have been completed. The research findings reveal that changes in oil viscosity resulting from variations in charging oil temperature have a considerable impact on the axial force of the torque converter. The axial force of the pump and turbine decreases as the temperature increases due to varying pressure sensitivity among different components. The influence of charging oil pressure on axial force follows a linear relationship, with its magnitude determined by the axial unbalanced area of the hydraulic torque converter during its design and development. In addition, a formula for the axial force of the hydraulic torque converter is proposed under different charging oil pressures. Furthermore, a novel suppression of axial force has been proposed without altering the structure, which has been validated as an effective method. The results lay a theoretical foundation for the research and suppression of axial forces in hydraulic torque converters, and they also have an engineering application value in the design of high-reliability and long-life converters.

Abstract:At present, hydraulic transmission loaders have high automatic adaptability and convenient operation, but their transmission efficiency is low, and the intelligent degree of energy consumption regulation is limited. Strengthening the research of locking device in torque converter is an important measure to effectively reduce energy consumption. Therefore, the research uses MATLAB software and torque converter parameters to build the external characteristic curves of the engine and torque converter, and builds the dynamic model based on the working principle and locking process of the lockup clutch. The research and experimental analysis are carried out from three aspects of the lockup dynamic process of the torque converter, the lock‐up and unlocking conditions, and the change of the lockup oil pressure of the clutch. The results show that the speed difference range between pump wheel and turbine (233.08–365.44 rpm) is much lower than that of other cases (409.68–616.23 rpm) when the engine and torque converter are matched. And the fuel rate is the highest when the throttle opening of the loader is 70%, about 38%. The above results show that the locking structure of the hydraulic torque converter of the loader can effectively reduce the working vibration and improve the service life and fuel rate. And its energy‐saving application effect has an important enlightening effect on the performance optimization and resource utilization of construction machinery, and provides new ideas for improvement. This study first analyzed the performance matching problem between the loader engine and the torque converter, and constructed a dynamic model of the torque converter. The locking hydraulic and locking oil filling designs of the torque converter were analyzed in the design of different torque shock absorbers and friction plate parameters. Finally, the proposed method was validated through simulation model construction and comparative experiments in the experiment.

Abstract:The internal characteristics of the torque converter were calculated from its tested external characteristics by the method of proration. The distributions of energy loss and static pressure in each impeller under the typical working conditions were calculated after determining the circulated fluid flow. Taking the type of 4L60ED245 torque converter-coupling for an example, the internal characteristics calculated by the suggested method were compared with those calculated by the one-dimensional theory, showing that the precision of the results calculated by the method of proration is higher, while the pressure variation trends at the inlet and exit calculated by both methods are similar.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the capability of a variable hydraulic motor widely used in hoisting bodies of large tonnage automobile crane.The problems of large pressure fluctuation in variable process,rigorous requirement of product technology and high pressure adaptability have been discovered by the capability analysis.The paper models the variable motor based on AMESim and verifies it according to the actual test.As a result of the optimization of the control valve critical dimensions based on this model,the work pressure of the pilot control cut-off valve rises,the pressure fluctuation of variable process falls, product technology requirement lowers and the passing rate of the product increases.
Analysis of and Experimental Research on a Hydraulic Traction System Based on a Digital Hydraulic Transformer

Abstract:In this study, we designed a new type of digital hydraulic transformer using four gear-pump/motor units with a displacement ratio of 20:21:22:23 and two control valve groups that consist of four solenoid directional valves. The driving gear shafts of the four gear-pump/motor units are fixedly connected to achieve synchronous rotation. The two control valve groups are respectively installed through an integrated valve block on the inlet and outlet of each gear-pump/motor unit. With the objective of reducing the installed power and energy consumption of hydraulic traction systems, we propose a new energy-saving hydraulic system based on a digital hydraulic transformer. This hydraulic system uses a digital hydraulic transformer as a pressure/flow control element. By controlling the power on/off states of eight solenoid directional valves, the digital hydraulic transformer can realize a change in output flow and then a change in speed of the hydraulic cylinder piston rod. Through the theoretical derivation and simulation analysis of the hydraulic system pressure/flow change process, and the experimental verification of the built hydraulic traction system based on the experimental platform, a conclusion is drawn that the proposed digital hydraulic transformer can change the output pressure/flow of a hydraulic system through a binary digital control, verifying the feasibility of the pressure change principle of the designed digital hydraulic transformer and the rationality of the hydraulic traction system circuit.
Performance Research and Application of Partially Filled Hydraulic Torque Converter

Abstract:Generally,hydraulic torque converter works under work cavities completely filled. But,when the cavities are partially filled,output characteristics of the torque converter is greatly different from those when completely filled. Work mechanism of a partially filled torque converter is presented and method to realize partially filled converter is suggested. A filling equation is obtained assuming equal thickness distribution of oil in torque converter and a static mathematical model of a partially filled converter is established on the basis of sheaf flow theory of one dimension. Calculation simulation is conducted with model LB46 hydraulic torque converter as a basic model and output characteristics of the partially filled converter are obtained. In partially filled condition,overall static characteristic curves of the converter are lowered in different extent and tend to be smoother. Especially,the lowering in counter rotation braking condition is relatively greater and approaches a constant torque,which means that the partially filled characteristics of torque converter could be used to realize an approximate constant torque control. All these provide theoretical basis for design and analysis of partially filled hydraulic control system and its application area is expanded.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2024. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the importance of external flow field circulation of hydraulic torque converter assembly in analysis. Compared with simply considering the internal flow field characteristics, it has influence on the internal flow field analysis, external characteristics and structural stress of hydraulic torque converter assembly. This paper models the flow path of the torque converter with different Schemes, the flow field pressures distribution on the impeller are analysed using computational fluid dynamics method (CFD). Scheme A adopts the traditional idea, which simply considering the influence of internal flow field on the performance. Scheme B contacts the external flow field especially including the auxiliary cavity, and comprehensively studies the influence of it on the performance. The results show that with the addition of an auxiliary chamber, the overall flow field pressure of the torque converter is lower than that without the auxiliary chamber. The external characteristics of the torque converter assembly were tested on experiment equipment, which has been verified that the CFD simulation results with the addition of the auxiliary chamber are closer to the experiment data, proving the accuracy of the method for the pressure simulation of flow field. On this basis, the stresses and deformations of the torque converter considering the auxiliary fluid chamber are compared and analysed in relation to the displacement limitations of the impellers. The results show that the maximum stress in the turbine is reduced by 57%–12% compared to the scheme A without considering the auxiliary fluid. In the case of special operating condition, the maximum stress was 137.06 MPa before considering the auxiliary fluid, while the maximum stress was 60.625 MPa after considering the auxiliary fluid, and the reduction is 57%. The effects of input speed, speed ratio and impeller structure on the stress and deformation were also analysed, and the results show that the impeller structure and input speed have a great influence on the stress and deformation.

Abstract:Presents the system established by taking variable-speed torque converter with adjustable guide blades as a pilot control unit and forming an open or closed loop feedback control system, and its outstanding advantages, such as high capacity, simplicity, reliability and good transmission efficiency owned by hydrodynamic drive, and the dynamic model developed for variable-speed torque converter with adjustable guide blades by means of theoretical analysis and regression analysis of experimental data, and concluds that the model is sophisticated and simple enough to be used as a tool for design, analysis and computer simulation of a hydrodynamic control system.
A Study of the Applied Technology of Hydraulic Speed Variation and Transmission for Wind Power Generation Systems

Abstract:The authors have analyzed the working principle of a hydraulic torque converter used for a wind power generation system to realize speed variation and constant frequency.To secure maximal wind power with a comprehensive consideration of the structural parameters of a mechanical transmission system,determined was the output speed regulation range of the hydraulic torque converter,capable of accommodating to any change of wind-wheel rotating speed and keeping a generator operating at a constant speed.On the basis of the torque balancing relationship of the transmission system and in conjunction with the torque-speed characteristics of a windmill rotor,the input power of a pump wheel has been calculated.Herefrom,the characteristic geometric parameters of the hydraulic torque converter was tentatively ascertained.From an energy balance equation,the efficiency of the whole transmission system was evaluated.The above research has laid a theoretical and analytic basis for the popularization of hydraulic transmission in wind power generation systems.
Modeling And Experimental Study Of A Novel Power Split Hydraulic Transmission

Abstract:The characteristics of a novel power split hydraulic transmission are studied in this paper. The new hydraulic transmission is built from a balanced vane pump with a floating ring. By coupling the floating ring to the output shaft, it becomes a hydraulic transmission, converting the mechanical power on the input shaft into the hydraulic power at the outlet and the mechanical power on the output shaft. By controlling the pressure at the outlet (control pressure), the power ratio transferred through mechanical and hydraulic path can be adjusted. One important feature of the new transmission is that the internal friction torque of the transmission, e.g., friction torque between vane tips and floating ring, helps to drive the output shaft whereas is wasted and turned into heat in a conventional vane pump. This increases the transfer efficiency from input shaft to output shaft. In this study, the characteristics of the input shaft torque, output shaft torque and the outlet flow rate are investigated through experimental studies. Results show that the shaft torques and the outlet flow rate are functions of control pressure and differential shaft speed. The mathematical models have been developed from the analytical and experimental results. The study provides a comprehensive understanding of the new transmission.

Abstract:The steady-state characteristics of a power split hydraulic transmission were carefully studied in this article. The hydraulic transmission is an alternative power split device for power split hydraulic hybrid drivetrain. It was built from a balanced vane pump, where an output shaft is added and coupled to its floating ring. The internal friction torques due to the relative motion between floating ring and vanes help to drive the output shaft. This improves the mechanical transfer efficiency from input to output shaft, making it more competitive than conventional hydrostatic transmission. The steady-state characteristics of the hydraulic transmission were investigated through both theoretical analysis and experimental studies. Mathematical models of the input and output shaft torques, and the outlet flow rate of the hydraulic transmission were developed. Studies show that the input and output shaft torques are not only dependent on outlet pressure, but also dependent on differential shaft speed. The outlet flow rate is proportional to the differential shaft speed. Finally, a hydro-mechanical transmission based on power split hydraulic transmission was introduced. The characteristics and system application of the hydro-mechanical transmission were given.

Abstract:Hydrodynamic torque converters are commonly used in self-propelled vehicle transmissions. Torque converters are most efficient in trucks, haulers, tractors and other heavy and utility vehicles operating in variable road conditions and off-road. Torque converters can automatically control the engine torque, but their efficiency is lower compared to mechanical gears. Many automotive hydromechanical transmissions use single-stage, four-wheeled torque converters containing two reactor wheels. In such torque converters, two reactor wheels form a single reactor. This design enables to slightly increase the efficiency as compared to a three-wheeled torque converter, but in practice four-wheel torque converter performance is not much different from that of three-wheel torque converters. In order to improve the efficiency of automotive hydromechanical transmissions, the study considers methods for online control of the four-wheel torque converter load capacity. The design of a torque converter with two reactors is proposed, providing for the online reactor switching depending on the vehicle driving conditions. This solution makes it possible to obtain two ranges through a joint operation of the transmission with the vehicle engine.

Abstract:Hydraulic engine mounts are now widely used in automotive powertrain. The dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic engine mounts are tested by experiment. The lumped-parameter models of hydraulic mounts are applied to. their dynamic characteristics analysis. ADAMS is used to establish the analysis models of hydraulic mount and simulate their dynamic characteristic. Comparing the simulation results to the test results, it shows that the calculated results by ADAMS agree with the test ones. The results show that the dynamic model developed in this paper is feasible and can describe real dynamic characteristics of the hydraulic engine mounts.

Abstract:A wind turbine is the most typical machine used to capture energy from the wind. The system design goal of a wind turbine is to obtain as much energy as possible from the wind while transmitting as much of that energy to the grid as possible, all under the highest possible level of stability. Currently, many inherent weaknesses result in a high failure rate in common commercial wind turbines with gear drive systems. To improve the performance, in this study, a typical 1.5 MW gear transmission was redesigned into a novel hydromechanical transmission system (HMTS). Parameters related to the HMTS efficiency were analysed to ensure that the efficiency was relatively high. The variable speed ratio (VSR) and torque triple absorption (TTA) principle were thoroughly deduced. Moreover, a MATLAB/Simulink- AMESim cosimulation model was proposed, and a 30 kW proportional prototype was established. Both simulation and experimental results show that the structural design and proposed control strategies meet the design goals, including a relatively high transmission efficiency around the rated wind speed, speed control below the rated wind speed, and torque control above the rated wind speed. These achievements should guarantee the future application of the novel transmission system in wind turbines.

Abstract:The hydraulic transformer, a new hydraulic transmission and control component, has much advantage in principle, but there are still some technologies to be resolved firstly before it becomes an applied one. The energy saving concept and working principle of the hydraulic transformer were given, the six different kidney positions of the port plate were discussed and the optimal one was chosen. Then working relationship between the kidneys of the port plate and the end cap were analyzed, an innovative working relationship was brought out, and that improved the efficiency and broadened the applicability of the apparatus. Finally the math models of the hydraulic transformer were established, and the simulation of flow and pressure transformation ratio were carried out.
