Abstract:Sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification technology was applied to treat the low concentration nitrate-contaminated water. In order to reduce the land area of biological denitrification system, two column reactors with the same volume, one slim and another short, were used to compare the denitrification performance. At last, the shortest HRT and the largest hydraulic loading were determined. The results showed that the shortest HRT and the largest hydraulic loading of the short reactor were 0. 5 h and1. 0 m3/( m2·h),and the average removal rates of TN and NO-3- N were 83% and 89%,respectively. While the shortest HRT and the largest hydraulic loading of the slim reactor were 10 min and 6. 0 m3/( m2·h),and the average removal rates of TN and NO-3- N were 89% and 94%,respectively. The accumulation of nitrite was not observed in both reactors. SEM observation was made when the reactors ranstably at the HRT of 0. 5 h,and it was verified that the filamentous bacteria predominated in both reactors, and bacterial population in the sludge was much higher than that on the surface of ceramsite.
