An Investigation on Mental Health Status and Personality of 7 - Year Medical Students

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the mental health status and related personality type of 7-year medical students. Methods 464 7-year medical students were tested by Symptom Checklist (SCL-90) and 280 of them were tested by Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Results ①Compared with the SCL-90 norm of youth group, 7-year medical students had higher scores(P0.01) in all factors except for interpersonal sensitivity. Compared with sample of postgraduate, they had significant higher scores in all factors (P0.01). Compared with sample of college students of China, they had significant higher scores in somatization, significant lower scores in interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, paranoid ideation and psychosis(P0.01), and they had significant higher scores in somatization, hostility, phobic anxiety than medical sophomore(P0.01). 9.9% of the subjects had particular mental health problems. Common problems are obsessive-compulsive, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, etc. ②Female students had higher significant scores in anxiety, phobic anxiety than male. ③ Students with introversive-transient temperament had higher scores in SCL-90, while students with extroversive-stable and introversive-stable had similar lower scores. Conclusion Some 7-year medical students have psychosomatic symptoms, and most of them tend to be introversive-transient temperament.
