Abstract:The pore size modulation of nano CaCO3particles and its effect on the CaO carbonation with CO2have been studied. A series of nano CaCO3with similar surface area but different pore size distributions were prepared by organic templates, and their differences in regeneration and carbonation properties were tested. The results showed that enlarging the average pore diameter could accelerate the thermal decomposition of CaCO3, and drop the regenerate temperature by 15℃. Analogously, increasing the pore diameter from 15 nm to 113 nm could promote the CaO carbonation rate and conversion. Additionally, researches revealed that the average pore diameter and surface area had a complex affection on CaO carbonation rate and conversion. The carbonation conversion of nano CaCO3with lower surface area is mostly affected by diffusion, while the conversion of nano CaCO3with greater surface area is mainly influenced by surface reaction.
The Study of CaO Carbonation Reaction Kinetics of Cage-like Nano-CaO based CO2Sorbents

Abstract:In order to study the carbonation reaction characteristics of the cage-like nano-CaO-based sorbent during the fast reaction segment, the carbonation reaction was experimentally investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under the reaction temperature ranging from 813 K to 933 K and CO2 partial pressure ranging from 0.01 MPa to 0.02 MPa. According to the characteristics of the carbonation reaction rate of cage-like nano-CaO based sorbents, a new criterion was proposed to distinguish the fast and the slow reaction segment of the cage-like nano-CaO based sorbents, and the cage-shaped nano-CaO in the fast reaction segment was fitted by the Boltzmann equation. The calculated results were in a good agreement with the experimental data, and the average relative deviation was less than 5.78%. The obtained activation energy of carbonation reaction of cage-like nano-CaO based sorbents was 26.66 kJ/mol, which was 3.54 kJ/mol less than that of commercial nano-CaO sorbents indicting that the carbonation reaction rate of the cage-like nano-CaO based sorbents was better than that of commercial nano-CaO sorbents.

Abstract:The mechanism and kinetics of the carbonation process of the ammoniacal brine were analysed in this paper. Chemical reactions involved in the carbonation process were considered as three consecutive and reversible steps: the first reaction between CO2 and NH3 is a fast one, which takes place within the liquid film, while the hydrolysis of NH2COO- and precipitation of NaHCO3 are slow reactions and taken place in the liquid bulk. Mathematical models for the reactions within the film and the bulk were proposed, respectively. Model simulations revealed that there are four resistances exisfed for CO2 absorption: gas side mass transfer, liquid film, bulk hydrolysis and precipitation, and each of them can become rate-determining step successively as carbonation degree increases from low level to high level.
Study on the kinetics of Ca-based CO2 sorbent of carbonation and calcination for adsorption enhanced reforming process

Abstract:A nanoscale CaCO3 was used as precursor for CO2 adsorbent. The properties of calcination followed by carbonation were studied to pursue the reaction condition of as a criterion of reaction section and diffusion section. The simulation results showed that a relative deviation of CO2 adsorption ratio of the reaction section and diffusion section were lower than 3.5 and 0.86% respectively. The lower decomposition reaction condition under low CO2 partial pressure and easy to be regenerated of nanoscale Ca-based CO2 adsorbent were unparalleled. The nano Ca-based CO2 sorbent has an attractive potential to be used in the adsorption enhanced reforming process for producing hydrogen. Abstract:CO2 mineralization is an economical technology with a low carbon footprint and has been considered an effective means to achieve carbon fixation. The slow diffusion and reaction in the gas-solid system of CO2 mineralization is a common issue affecting the normal carbonation depth. The surface water plays a critical role as an ionic mass transferring medium in the reaction systems. By studying the CO2 mineralization of dispersed calcium silicate (CS) particles, this work systematically revealed the kinetics and mechanisms of carbonation under mild environments (below 80 degrees C). It was interesting to find that carbonation of CS particles followed different kinetic mechanisms depending on the temperature and with the migration of surface water. At 20 degrees C, the CO2 mineralization reaction conformed to the unreacted shrinking-core mechanism with the primary reaction rate-limiting step of product layer diffusion. For higher temperatures (40-80 degrees C), the carbonation process was controlled by the surface water coverage. The leaching behavior of CS indicated that electrical double layer (EDL) formed at the particle interface and limited Ca2+ activity in water film might be the mechanism of surface water coverage controlled kinetics. Accordingly, the enhanced CO2 mineralization of CS, 58.16% CO2 uptake increment, was realized at 80 degrees C through rehydration activation. The evolution of mineral micromorphology with process of leaching and carbonation is characterized by semi-quantitative XRD analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis. CO2 mineralization kinetics and the proposed activation method under mild environment open the door to efficient CO2 mineralization with low energy consumption.

Abstract:Ca-Looping is a promising technology for capturing CO2. Here, ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations combined with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to provide atomic-level insights into the carbonation reaction of CaO with CO2. Results showed that two fast kinetic stages appear when the temperature increases. To understand this phenomenon, the diffusion, structural evolution as well as the carbonates accumulation were analyzed. It was found that the recovery of the initial fast reaction rate largely stems from the formations of pyrocarbonate anion. On CO2-CaCO3 interface, the solid product molecules are continuously propagated and joined in the existing C2O52− phase with multiple instances of formation and dissociation. Furthermore, surface carbonates can combine with crystal oxygen in the form of metastable corner-linked CO44− tetrahedron to diffuse inward the CaO particle. The increase of temperature greatly accelerates the formation of outer polymeric phases of CO2-CO32− and diffusion of inner CO32−, causing more CO2 molecules to be adsorbed and the carbonation reaction rate rises sharply.

Abstract:A rate-equation-based grain model was developed to describe and predict the complex behaviors of the carbonation reaction of CaO with CO2 in calcium looping. In the model, the assumption of a uniform CaCO3 film at the grain scale was replaced with the product island morphology, and the rate equation theory was used to calculate the growth of product islands; this modified grain model was integrated into a particle scale model in which gas diffusion inside a CaO particle and the pore plugging effect were considered. The macroscopic kinetics of the carbonation reaction-including the initial fast stage and the later product layer diffusion stage-could be predicted successfully using the developed theory and was validated by comparison with experimental data. The effects of structural parameters on the carbonation kinetics were discussed. Furthermore, a nanometer-scale grain design criterion for CaO sorbent was proposed to optimize particle structure and achieve maximum CaO conversion in the initial fast stage; this concept was validated and supported by the developed rate-equation-based grain model. This developed model provides a link between microscopic mechanisms at the grain level and the gas diffusion behavior inside a sorbent particle, and it can be used to describe the macroscopic kinetics of a gas-solid reaction.

Abstract:Rate equation theory for CaO carbonation reaction was developed to replace the assumption of critical product layer thickness with a complete calculation of the rates of CaCO3 nucleation and growth. The model includes rate expressions for the island size distribution function with time evolution, and the surface reaction, surface diffusion, grain boundary and lattice diffusion, and Ostwald ripening were considered in this theory to describe CaCO3 product islands growing on the CaO surface. The macroscopic behavior of a gas-solid reaction can be calculated with the island size distribution. The carbonation reaction of CaO with CO2 including both early islands growth stage and later product layer diffusion stage was calculated with the developed theory and was validated with experimental data, and the relative importance of some elementary steps was discussed. This rate equation theory provides a link between the macroscopic behavior of a gas-solid reaction with the microscopic mechanisms from the molecular level.

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO), a CO2 sorbent and key ingredient in the process of making cement, exhibits excellent potential for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) applications through calcium looping and integrated carbon capture and utilization, owing to its outstanding kinetic properties and high recyclability. From a fundamental standpoint, it is important to establish a comprehensive and precise carbonation kinetic model for CaO. In the present study, a density functional theory (DFT)-based rate equation was developed to predict the gas–solid reaction kinetics of CaO carbonation with CO2 in calcium looping. The reaction pathway of CaO carbonation, including surface reactions and structural transformations, was obtained by a transition state search of DFT calculations, and the transition state theory was used to calculate the reaction rate constants. The nucleation model was implemented in the mean-field surface reaction model to describe the nucleation of the CaCO3 product at the gas–solid interface. A grain model was developed to couple the surface reaction and CO2 diffusion through the product layer. The developed theory was validated using a wide range of experimental data, and the negative activation energy of CaO carbonation close to equilibrium was accurately predicted. The developed first principle-based rate equation provides a detailed theoretical framework for predicting CaO performance and optimizing the microstructure of Ca-based sorbents.

Abstract:Based on three-dimensional distributions of cement particles, cement hydration was simulated to obtain the hydrate content and the pore structure of cement paste. Additionally, the porosity of mortar and concrete was obtained by considering aggregate inclusion and interfacial transition zones (ITZ). Then, a coupled model for heat transfer, moisture transport and carbonation in cement-based materials was established. The experimental carbonation results agreed well with the simulated results for mortars and concretes with different water-cement ratios. The carbonation reaction front was far beyond the complete carbonation depth. The aggregate dilution had a more significant effect on carbonation than the ITZ did. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This study couples the Navier-Stokes and multicomponent advection-diffusion equations within the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) to innovatively simulate the CO2–CH4 displacement in nanoporous shale matrix. In the LBM simulations of CO2 injection into heterogenous CH4-saturated nanoporous media, gas movements are modeled by two separate advection-diffusion lattices driven by the velocity solved from the third Navier-Stokes lattice. Langmuir adsorption kinetics is employed at the fluid-solid interfaces to simulate the mass exchange between the bulk free space and the solid matrix. Mass transfer inside the solid matrix is considered with adsorption and diffusion parameters obtained from molecular dynamics studies. CO2 adsorption and CH4 desorption are simulated simultaneously. The coupling scheme is successfully validated for advection, diffusion, and surface adsorption. Results show that the global mass transfer process is sensitive to intra-matrix diffusion. When the solid diffusion rate is ∼10−4 of the bulk one, selectivity can significantly impact the outflux concentration. Changing the CO2 adsorption rate constant 0.1–10 times nearly has no impact on gas adsorption in the solids. In comparison, the CH4 desorption rate constant strongly correlates to the CH4 desorption pathway. Increasing the particle size under a given porosity may benefit advection and lead to fast adsorption/desorption in the solids.

Abstract:Previous researchers have made a lot of contributions on carbonation reaction. However, effects of multi-cracks and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) on the diffusivity of carbon dioxide are critical and thorny problems. In this study, numerical simulation of carbonation process using the COMSOL Multiphysics are presented based on in-situ 3D microstructure evolution of X-ray CT. Firstly, micro X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) was used to monitor the carbonation depth evolution of cement mortar with different additions of blast furnace slag (BFS). It is shown that the optimal addition of blast furnace slag (BFS) against the carbonation is no more than 50%. In addition, COMSOL Multiphysics numerical model based on micro X-ray CT image was used to investigate effects of transverse crack and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) on the diffusivity of carbon dioxide. Finally, effects of different crack width, length, ITZ of polygon Random Aggregate Structure (RAS), and aggregate size and content on the diffusivity of carbon dioxide have been investigated.

Abstract:It is significant to investigate the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) precipitation mechanism during the carbon capture process; nevertheless, CaCO3 precipitation is not clearly understood yet. Understanding the carbonation mechanism at the atomic level can contribute to the mineralization capture and utilization of carbon dioxide, as well as the development of new cementitious materials with high-performance. There are many factors, such as temperature and CO2 concentration, that can influence the carbonation reaction. In order to achieve better carbonation efficiency, the reaction conditions of carbonation should be fully verified. Therefore, based on molecular dynamics simulations, this paper investigates the atomic-scale mechanism of carbonation. We investigate the effect of carbonation factors, including temperature and concentration, on the kinetics of carbonation (polymerization rate and activation energy), the early nucleation of calcium carbonate, etc. Then, we analyze the local stresses of atoms to reveal the driving force of early stage carbonate nucleation and the reasons for the evolution of polymerization rate and activation energy. Results show that the higher the calcium concentration or temperature, the higher the polymerization rate of calcium carbonate. In addition, the activation energies of the carbonation reaction increase with the decrease in calcium concentrations.

Abstract:A reduced-order model was developed to describe the CaO carbonation kinetics by simplifying the detailed one-dimensional rate-equation-based grain model. The reduced-order model was derived using the Thiele modulus method and is an analytical model, which can be easily used in the reactor scale model or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. In the reduced-order model, physical/chemical steps occurring during the carbonation process were considered, including external diffusion of gas around the particle, intraparticle diffusion, surface reaction, product islands growth and product layer diffusion. This model can be used to investigate the complex kinetic behaviors such as reaction controlled steps, kinetics transition from chemical reaction to product layer diffusion, and the effect of particle structure change on intraparticle diffusion, such as pore plugging phenomenon. The prediction accuracy of reduced-order model was verified by the detailed one-dimensional model. In order to demonstrate the application of the reduced-order model for reactor scale analysis, the CaO carbonation kinetics under dif-ferent temperatures (600-750 degrees C), CO2 concentrations (25-75 vol%) and particle sizes (0.2-3 mm) were measured using a novel micro-fluidized bed thermogravimetric analysis (MFB-TGA) method, which is based on real-time mass measurement of CaO sample in a fluidizing state. The reduced-order model was implemented into a K-L two-phase bubbling bed reactor model to analyze the experimental data of a micro-fluidized bed reactor. Results indicated that the two-stage behavior of carbonation kinetics can be described successfully using the model, and the effect of particle structure change on pore plugging and intraparticle diffusion can be well predicted and explained. The carbonation is first-order reaction when the CO2 partial pressure is within 75% (1 bar). The effect of particle size on carbonation kinetics shows three-zone characteristics of reaction/diffusion combined controlling mechanism, and was discussed in detail. The reduced-order model provides a promising application for describing multiscale mechanisms (surface, particle and reactor) of carbonation kinetics. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, migration of supercritical CO2 in porous media under conditions of saline aquifers is numerically simulated using lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). A new LBM model has been proposed to minimize the unphysical interfacial current. Using the newly formulated LBM model, buoyancy-driven two phase flow past through body centered sphere beds, as the simplified geometries of porous media, and also real rock geometry obtained by Micro-CT scanner is numerically simulated. CO2/saline-water properties under conditions of CO2 storage in saline aquifers are used in the simulation. Through the simulation, the effects of different parameters including bond number, contact angle, viscosity ratioand porosity of porous media are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:Kinetics of CaO carbonation reaction under pressurized conditions were studied using a Thermax 500 Pressurized Thermogravimetric Analyzer. Experiment research shows that the ultimate conversion of CaO increases with increasing total pressure and CO2 partial pressure. Reaction rate of carbonation at the chemical reaction control stage is enhanced by elevated CO2 partial pressure. The shrinking core model can characterize carbonation reaction correctly. Based on the kinetics analysis using this model, it's proved that activation energy at the chemical reaction control stage reduces obviously with increasing total pressure and CO2 partial pressure. A reaction rate equation considering the effects of reaction temperature and CO2 partial pressure is proposed and fits the experiment data well. It is concluded that pressurized conditions are favorable for CaO carbonation reaction. The results can be used for process simulating of near zero emissions and power plant flue gas CO2 capture systems.

Abstract:Nanofluid is a particle suspension composed of liquid and nanoparticles, and has great potential to enhance mass transfer. Most previous studies have only considered the effect of the Brownian motion of nanoparticles on mass transfer. In this study, the two-dimensional Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) combined with the cell automation (CA) probabilistic model is proposed to investigate the mass transfer of CO 2 in nanofluids. The model predictions were in good agreement with experimental data, validating the developed mass transfer model. The simulation results indicated that the Brownian motion and grazing effect enhanced the mass transfer in nanofluids, and should be considered simultaneously. Comparing with the pure water, adding 0.1 wt.% SiO 2 nanoparticles increased the absorption rate up to 58.3%, and the effective diffusion coefficients reached 5.41 × 10 −9 m 2 s −1 . In addition, changing the physical parameters directly affected the Brownian motion and grazing effect, and changed the effective diffusion coefficient of CO 2 in the nanofluid. The effective diffusion coefficient decreased with an increase in particle size and increased with an increase in fluid temperature.
