Abstract:The co-treatment of landfill leachate and domestic wastewater has emerged as a promising solution for developing countries, given the feasibility of leachate transport to wastewater treatment plants and the plants' capacity to absorb the additional load. This study evaluates the impact of adding pretreated, stabilized landfill leachate to domestic wastewater treatment in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors, focusing on the removal of recalcitrant organic matter. Experiments were conducted using pilot-scale 14.14 L reactors with a flow rate of 1.77 L h −1 and an hydraulic retention time of 8 h. The proposed co-treatment demonstrated Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal efficiencies ranging from 69.2 to 81.4%, with residual COD values between 88 and 168 mg L −1 . The maximum pretreated leachate addition tested (10%) did not negatively affect reactor performance. However, COD increment analysis suggests that the anaerobic co-treatment was unable to remove the additional COD from the leachate, most of which was recalcitrant. Coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation post-treatment proved most efficient at a pH of 5.0 and an alum dosage of 20 mg L −1 , achieving an inert COD removal efficiency of 67.2%, with a residual value of 21 mg L −1 . Both inert COD values and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy data indicate that the recalcitrant organic matter from the leachate was not degraded by anaerobic co-treatment but was significantly removed by the physico-chemical post-treatment. This supports the hypothesis that anaerobic co-treatment predominantly dilutes, rather than degrades, the recalcitrant organic matter from stabilized leachate.
