Abstract:Combustion characteristics and emissions of 2-methylfuran(MF),MF-gasoline blend fuels with volume ratios of 10%(MF,10)and 20%(MF,20)were investigated experimentally in a spark-ignition engine, and comparisons with neat gasoline were made. Engine tests show that the knock suppression ability of MF and two blend fuels are superior to that of gasoline, which allows the advancing spark timings at high engine loads. Shorter combustion durations of MF and its blend fuels are presented compared with that of neat gasoline, bringing the relative lower coefficient of variations and higher cylinder peak pressure and mean temperature. Because of higher combustion temperature and oxygen content of MF and two blend fuels,a remarkable reduction in hydrocarbons(HC)and carbon monoxide(CO)emissions are presented compared with those of gasoline. The maximum decreasings for HC and CO in the case of 20%blending are 10% and 3%,respectively. But high NOx is presented for the MF and its blend fuels.
