Abstract:This empirical research studies on the fit between compensation and strategy by the data of 185 firms.It compares two kinds of fits: fit as mediation,fit as moderation.This research supports fit as mediation,refuses fit as moderation,resolves a long-standing dispute.Strategy can not produce the proper compensation to fit itself.Firms need come up with appropriate compensation to fit its strategy.At last,we give some advices to practicers.

Abstract:Based on the thorough review of thepast research about compensation and psychological contract, the paper examines the relationships between compensation strategy and psychological contract, using data of 128 supervisors and 526 employees from 20 companies. Results show that there are the mechanistic compensation strategy and the organic compensation strategy. Moreover, the two compensation strategies have significant effects on the dimensions of economic motivation, contextual support, development opportunity, organizational identity and entrepreneurship orientation in the employer's psychological contract. They also affect the dimensions of economic motivation, contextual support, development opportunity, rules keeping, organizational identity and entrepreneurship orientation in the employee's psychological contract significantly. At last, the paper discussed the implications of the study and the directions for future. research in employees' motivation and strategic compensation management.

Abstract:The incentive of compensation is the main tool of human resource management in firms. Pay systems are changing with the business environment. How to choose the proper pay system is one of the difficulties in enterprise management. Pay system and its effectiveness are the focal point in the research of enterprises management theory as well. The authors reviewed pay system effectiveness studies and presented a summary in this presentation. Firstly, there exist two types of theories on compensation, i.e. wage theories and incentive theories; Secondly, competency-based pay, broad banding pay and variable pay are new pay systems. An effective pay system must fit the organization design, such as organizational culture and organizational strategy; thirdly, there are still controversies with regard to research conclusions on pay system effectiveness. And some researchers believe that a few new forms of pay systems are not as effective as expected. Fourthly, these publications on reward and organizational systems alignment are too theoretical, and lack of concrete case study evidence. Fifthly, whether these new pay system forms are suitable for Chinese companies deserves empirical exploration. Finally, The concept of'total reward', which includes monetary reward and non-monetary reward, must be introduced into pay system effectiveness research,

Abstract:Compensation is one of the most effective methods used to align and motivate salespeople to accomplish sales and organizational objectives. For this reason, sales researchers have made considerable strides in understanding the impact that compensation structure has on salespeople and salesforce performance. In this article, we examine the theoretical foundations of the sales compensation literature. We then perform an extensive review of this literature to identify the perceptual and behavioral outcomes associated with incentive- and salary-based compensation. Finally, the limitations of the sales compensation research are identified, and future studies are proposed.

Abstract:In this study, we characterize the optimal compensation scheme for a firm that sells a single product with a limited stocking quantity through a sales agent. Our focus is on understanding how the supply–demand mismatch costs affect the firm’s optimal compensation scheme. There are two main findings. First, under the deterministic demand response, the classical optimality result of the convex increasing compensation scheme breaks with the consideration of supply–demand mismatch costs. Instead, the optimal compensation is S‐shaped under certain conditions. Second, under the stochastic demand response, the classical optimality result of the menu of linear compensation schemes fails to hold with the consideration of supply–demand mismatch costs. Instead, the optimal compensation schemes consist of a menu of linear compensation coupled with a penalty of the agent’s forecast error.

Abstract:Human resource is the key resource for high-technology companies,and compensation is the main incentive tool to gain human capital advantage. "The system is more important than technology",pay systems are most important for high-technology firms' survival and development.Based on these existing researches,a scientific and reasonable pay system according to the characteristics of high technology firms and their human capital is put forward.Pay systems in high technology firms must be arranged with a compensation level which is higher than or compares with the market pay level.The pay systema are competency-based,long-term incentives related employee benefit with firm profit,broad banding pay structural,total reward and competition mechanism.An empirical study about pay system effectiveness in high-technology firms is given,which offers data evidence.Finally some suggestions about pay system reform in high-technology firms are provided.

Abstract:This study provides a comprehensive model of an agent’s behavior in response to multiple sales management instruments, including compensation, recruiting/termination, and training. The model takes into account many of the key elements that constitute a realistic sales force setting: allocation of effort, forward-looking behavior, present bias, training effectiveness, and employee selection and attrition. By understanding how these elements jointly affect agents’ behavior, the study provides guidance on the optimal design of sales management policies. A field validation, by comparing counterfactual and actual outcomes under a new policy, attests to the accuracy of the model. The results demonstrate a tradeoff between adjusting fixed and variable pay; how sales training serves as an alternative to compensation; a potential drawback of hiring high-performing, experienced salespeople; and how utilizing a leave package leads to sales force restructuring. In addition, the study offers a key methodological contribution by providing formal identification conditions for hyperbolic time preference. The key to identification is that under a multiperiod nonlinear incentive system, an agent’s proximity to a goal affects only future payoffs in nonpecuniary benefit periods, providing exclusion restrictions on the current payoff. Abstract:We propose an extended principal-agent model considering employee commitment and describe how to motivate committed agent, who not only shows regard for his own income but also cares the organizational benefit. The principal also would like to provide support to such an agent and his utility depends on both the final profit and the payoff to the agent. There are some interesting insights into the characteristic of optimal contracts: First, commitment is an effective motivator and committed employee needs less monetary inducement to perform his job well than one who not. More specifically, undifferentiated pay is sufficient in incentivizing committed agent to implement high effort in some cases. Second, commitment and wage differential are substitutable to each other in the optimal incentive compensation design. Third, commitment is not always good for organizational efficiency when the increase in employee commitment relies on the principal’s support. Our model's finding is consistent with employee incentive in some organizations, and also help to incentive mechanism design under wages differential constraints and understanding excessive compensation.

Abstract:Pay-for-performance compensation systems are often employed in sales organizations and can potentially lead to pay inequalities. With increased transparency of employees’ pay outcomes stemming from CRM and related technologies, salespeople now have ample opportunity to observe these inequalities, compare their pay with that of others, and make fairness assessments. These comparisons and assessments then have implications in terms of utility, behaviors, and performance of salespeople, which have scarcely been explored in the sales or marketing literature. This article considers research on pay inequality from three other fields – economics, management, and psychology – and highlights relevant issues in sales contexts. Furthermore, the article provides scholars with a resource that elaborates on the nature of pay inequalities and their multiple outcomes on individual and organizational performance, as well as noting their likely antecedents and moderators.

Abstract:: Senior executives control the operation of the enterprise. Whether the executive compensation management is reasonable and whether it can meet the needs of executives will directly affect the operation efficiency and management efficiency of the whole enterprise. In modern enterprises, the separation of ownership and management is a major feature, and the emergence of agency issues is inevitable, mainly due to adverse selection and moral hazard under the background of information asymmetry. Determining executive compensation by evaluating corporate performance, on the one hand, can mobilize the enthusiasm of executives; on the other hand, it can effectively reduce the agency cost caused by information asymmetry. Based on the principal-agent theory, this paper firstly discusses the agency problem caused by the information asymmetry between shareholders and executives, and then points out that executive compensation, as an incentive means, can effectively alleviate the agency conflict. Previous studies have shown that there is a positive correlation between executive compensation and corporate performance. Then, this paper summarizes the research on the compensation dispersion and compensation stickiness in executive compensation management, so as to put forward some considerations and suggestions for the design of executive compensation management system. Finally, it makes a summary and puts forward the prospect of future research on the shortcomings of existing studies.

Abstract:Proper executive incentives alleviate agency conflict and improve firm performance. This study examined the pertinent literature on the recent study of executive compensation incentives and company performance. Through the literature analysis method, the last five years of relevant literatures were classified according to monetary pay incentives, equity pay incentives and pay gap incentives. This paper summarized the common conclusions that were obtained from the current researches and discussed some deficiencies of current researches. At the same time, this paper also put forward suggestions on sample selection, research methodology and other shortcomings in the current researches. By analyzing and integrating the literature from 2018 to 2023, it helps company owners to improve company performance starting from executive compensation incentives in the corporate governance process. At the same time, this paper will provide an outlook on the possible directions of future related research and provide new ideas for future research.
A flexible employee recruitment and compensation model: A bi-level optimization approach

Abstract:The growing practice of flexible work following the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a significant impact on management and human resource (HR) practices. In this paper, we propose a novel bi-level mathematical programming model that can serve as a decision support tool for firms in real-life settings to improve recruitment and compensation decisions associated with hybrid and flexible work plans. The proposed model is composed of two levels: the first level reflects the company's goal of maximizing profitability by offering competitive salaries to candidates. The second level reflects the candidate's goal of minimizing the gap between their desired salary and the perceived benefits of a preferred flexible plan. We show that the model provides an exact solution based on a mixed integer formulation and present a computational analysis based on changing candidate behaviors in response to the firm's strategy, thus demonstrate how the problem's parameters influence the decision policy. Our proposed model leads to efficient managerial practices, compared to conventional models that utilize a single non-flexible plan. Results indicate that introducing a flexible work plan leads to an improvement of up to 59 percent in the firm's profitability. We apply the optimal solution of the bi-level model to a real-world case study of a company recruiting software engineers. Results demonstrate the applicability of the optimal solution to a real-world dataset. This paper advances knowledge by proposing a novel bi-level model for effective recruitment and compensation decisions in real-world flexible workforce settings.

Abstract:Determining entrepreneurs' compensation is one of important contents of rewarding system in enterprises. The issue of entrepreneurs' compensation system needs to be further studies. This paper elaborates principles for determining entrepreneurs' compensation, analyses the key factors when designing entrepreneurs' compensation, and proposes a framework and model for entrepreneurs' compensation from the viewpoint of principle-agent theory. Finally, the paper discusses the difficulties and unsolved problems in designing entrepreneurs annual salary system in Chinese enterprises.

Abstract:Executive compensation has an extensive research history. Although agency theory is an important theoretical framework used in this research, the failure to find a link between performance and compensation has stimulated the development and application of other theoretical lenses originating in diverse management disciplines. This paper proposes three main paradigms underlying theories on executive compensation - control, social-psychological and fit paradigms. It then allocates 18 theories mentioned in research on executive compensation to each of these paradigms and discusses the implications. The resulting synthesis provides new insights for research and practice in the field of executive compensation.

Abstract:The incentive effect of team compensation scheme did not get enough attention from scholars until the past decade.The past research use different research methods include ecomomic model,experiment study and survey research.The scope of these research focused on the different results of individual compensation and team compensation in the context of team pattern,the incentive effects of different team compensation schemes,the moderating effects of team task interdependence on the incentive effect of team compensation scheme and the effects of top management team compensation dispersion.This paper holds that in future the fundamental research of team compensation design,the laboratory experiment or survey study based on field data as well as the influence of team characteristics and organizational culture on incentive effect should be paid more attention to.
Research Evolution and Trend Analysis of Compensation Research in Chinese State-owned Enterprises Based on Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract:To obtain a comprehensive understanding of the evolution and development of state-owned enterprise compensation research in China, 266 articles from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database from 2002 to 2022 are utilized as the research samples, Using CiteSpace visualization software and combining with bibliometric methods, the amount of literature published over the years, authors, institutions, research hotspots and frontiers of state-owned enterprise compensation research were analyzed. The results show that: 1) The annual literature publishing volume demonstrates a trend of change, initially showing expansion and then declining until peaking in 2018. 2) On the topic of SOE compensation, writers and issuing bodies are often dispersed, with very few authors and organizations collaborating closely. 3) "Salary control," "Salary gap," and "Executive compensation" have the highest intermediary centrality, "executive compensation" is the most frequently occurring of the three terms related to "executive compensation." Research frontiers point to areas such as Salary restriction order and salary control, topics that have become hot research topics in SOE compensation in recent years. In the future, research will concentrate on national policy and conduct in-depth research in five areas: how to close the salary gap in state-owned businesses and strategies; how to create an ideal system for evaluating salaries; and how to optimize and enhance executive compensation.

Using Organizational Philosophy to Create a Self-Sustaining Compensation Plan Without Harming Academic Missions

Abstract:Problem: Academic physician reimbursement has moved to productivity-based compensation plans. To be sustainable, such plans must be self-funding. Additionally, unless research and education are appropriately valued, faculty involved in these efforts will become disillusioned, yet revenue generation in these activities is less robust than for clinical care activities. Approach: Faculty at the Department of Medicine, University of Florida Health, elected a committee of junior and senior faculty and division chiefs to restructure the compensation plan in fiscal year (FY) 2011. This committee was charged with designing a new compensation plan based on seven principles of organizational philosophy: equity, compensation coupled to productivity, authority aligned with responsibility, respect for all academic missions, transparency, professionalism, and self-funding in each academic mission. Outcomes: The new compensation plan was implemented in FY2013. A survey administered at the end of FY2015 showed that 61% (76/125) of faculty were more satisfied with this plan than the previous plan. Since the year before implementation, clinical relative value units per faculty increased 7% (from 3,458 in FY2012 to 3,704 in FY2015, P < .002), incentives paid per faculty increased 250% (from $3,191 in FY2012 to $11,153 in FY2015, P ≤ .001), and publications per faculty increased 15% (from 2.6 in FY2012 to 3.0 in FY2015, P < .001). Grant submissions, external funding, and teaching hours also increased per faculty but did not reach statistical significance. Next steps: An important next step will be to incorporate quality metrics into the compensation plan, without affecting costs or throughput.
