A Comprehensive Appraisal and Spatial Variation of the Level of Ecological Civilization Construction in China

Abstract:The construction of ecological civilization is of great significance for China’s economic and social development in the future. Based on the connotation of the ecological civilization and the general principles of establishing the comprehensive appraisal indicator system, this paper builds a comprehensive appraisal indicator system of the development level of ecological civilization of China’s thirty-one provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities from economic, social, environmental, cul?tural and institutional aspects. Then, the paper applies the statistical data of the year of 2013 to make the comprehensive ap?praisal and cluster analysis on the development level of ecological civilization of China’s thirty-one administrative regions. The results show that the thirty-one regions in China can be divided into four groups:excellent grade, partial optimal grade, medium grade and weak grade. The regions with relatively higher degree of ecological civilization mostly lie in the east coastal areas, whereas those with relatively lower degree of ecological civilization mostly lie in the southwest areas.
